Gaussian processes are gaining increasing popularity among the control community, in particular for the modelling of discrete time state space systems. However, it has not been clear how to incorporate model information, in the form of known state relationships, when using a Gaussian process as a predictive model. An obvious example of known prior information is position and velocity related states. Incorporation of such information would be beneficial both computationally and for faster dynamics learning. This paper introduces a method of achieving this, yielding faster dynamics learning and a reduction in computational effort from O(Dn2) to O((D - F)n2) in the prediction stage for a system with D states, F known state relationships and n observations. The effectiveness of the method is demonstrated through its inclusion in the PILCO learning algorithm with application to the swing-up and balance of a torque-limited pendulum and the balancing of a robotic unicycle in simulation. © 2012 IEEE.

As the intelligence and the functionality of microrobots increase, there is a growing need to incorporate sensors into these robots. In order to limit the outer dimensions of these microsystems, this research investigates sensors that can be integrated efficiently into microactuators. Here, a pneumatic piston-cylinder microactuator with an integrated inductive position sensor was developed. The main advantage of pneumatic actuators is their high force and power density at microscale. The outside diameter of the actuator is 1.3 mm and the length is 15 mm. The stroke of the actuator is 12 mm, and the actuation force is 1 N at a supply pressure of 1.5 MPa. The position sensor consists of two coils wound around the cylinder of the actuator. The measurement principle is based on the change in coupling factor between the coils as the piston moves in the actuator. The sensor is extremely small since one layer of 25 μm copper wire is sufficient to achieve an accuracy of 10 μm over the total stroke. Position tests with a PI controller and a sliding mode controller showed that the actuator is able to position with an accuracy up to 30 μm. Such positioning systems offer great opportunities for all devices that need to control a large number of degrees of freedom in a restricted volume. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this paper we present a new, compact derivation of state-space formulae for the so-called discretisation-based solution of the H∞ sampled-data control problem. Our approach is based on the established technique of continuous time-lifting, which is used to isometrically map the continuous-time, linear, periodically time-varying, sampled-data problem to a discretetime, linear, time-invariant problem. State-space formulae are derived for the equivalent, discrete-time problem by solving a set of two-point, boundary-value problems. The formulae accommodate a direct feed-through term from the disturbance inputs to the controlled outputs of the original plant and are simple, requiring the computation of only a single matrix exponential. It is also shown that the resultant formulae can be easily re-structured to give a numerically robust algorithm for computing the state-space matrices. © 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd. This paper introduces a new formulation of variable horizon model predictive control (VH-MPC) that utilises move blocking for reducing computational complexity. Various results pertaining to move blocking are derived, following which, a generalised blocked VH-MPC controller is formulated for linear discrete-time systems. Robustness to bounded disturbances is ensured through the use of tightened constraints. The resulting time-varying control scheme is shown to guarantee robust recursive feasibility and finite-time completion. An example is then presented for a particular choice of blocking regime, as would be applicable to vehicle manœuvring problems. Simulations demonstrate the efficacy of the formulation. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This paper is concerned with time-domain optimal control of active suspensions. The optimal control problem formulation has been generalised by incorporating both road disturbances (ride quality) and a representation of driver inputs (handling quality) into the optimal control formulation. A regular optimal control problem as well as a risk-sensitive exponential optimal control performance index is considered. Emphasis has been given to practical considerations including the issue of state estimation in the presence of load disturbances (driver inputs). © 2012 IEEE.

We consider the discrete-time dynamics of a network of agents that exchange information according to a nearest-neighbour protocol under which all agents are guaranteed to reach consensus asymptotically. We present a fully decentralised algorithm that allows any agent to compute the final consensus value of the whole network in finite time using the minimum number of successive values of its own state history. We show that the minimum number of steps is related to a Jordan block decomposition of the network dynamics, and present an algorithm to compute the final consensus value in the minimum number of steps by checking a rank condition of a Hankel matrix of local observations. Furthermore, we prove that the minimum number of steps is related to graph theoretical notions that can be directly computed from the Laplacian matrix of the graph and from the minimum external equitable partition. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. The information provided by the in-cylinder pressure signal is of great importance for modern engine management systems. The obtained information is implemented to improve the control and diagnostics of the combustion process in order to meet the stringent emission regulations and to improve vehicle reliability and drivability. The work presented in this paper covers the experimental study and proposes a comprehensive and practical solution for the estimation of the in-cylinder pressure from the crankshaft speed fluctuation. Also, the paper emphasizes the feasibility and practicality aspects of the estimation techniques, for the real-time online application. In this study an engine dynamics model based estimation method is proposed. A discrete-time transformed form of a rigid-body crankshaft dynamics model is constructed based on the kinetic energy theorem, as the basis expression for total torque estimation. The major difficulties, including load torque estimation and separation of pressure profile from adjacent-firing cylinders, are addressed in this work and solutions to each problem are given respectively. The experimental results conducted on a multi-cylinder diesel engine have shown that the proposed method successfully estimate a more accurate cylinder pressure over a wider range of crankshaft angles. We study the behavior of channel capacity when a one-bit quantizer is employed at the output of the discrete-time average-power-limited Gaussian channel. We focus on the low signal-to-noise ratio regime, where communication at very low spectral efficiencies takes place, as in Spread-Spectrum and Ultra-Wideband communications. It is well known that, in this regime, a symmetric one-bit quantizer reduces capacity by 2/π, which translates to a power loss of approximately two decibels. Here we show that if an asymmetric one-bit quantizer is employed, and if asymmetric signal constellations are used, then these two decibels can be recovered in full. © 2011 IEEE.

The capacity of discrete-time, noncoherent, multipath fading channels is considered. It is shown that if the variances of the path gains decay faster than exponentially, then capacity is unbounded in the transmit power. © 2008 IEEE.

The Brushless Doubly-Fed Induction Generator (BDFIG) shows commercial promise for wind power generation due to its lower cost and higher reliability compared to the Doubly-Fed Induction Generator (DFIG). For the purposes of commercialisation, the BDFIG must meet grid codes at all times. Nowadays, all new wind generators have to ride through certain grid faults, and the Low-Voltage Ride Through (LVRT) capability has become one of the most important points on which to assess the performance a generator. This paper, for the first time, proposes a control scheme to enable the the BDFIG to ride through symmetrical voltage dips. Simulation results and experimental results on a prototype BDFIG show that the proposed scheme gives the capability to ride through low voltage faults. © 2011 IEEE.

A method is proposed to characterize contraction of a set through orthogonal projections. For discrete-time multi-agent systems, quantitative estimates of convergence (to a consensus) rate are provided by means of contracting convex sets. Required convexity for the sets that should include the values that the transition maps of agents take is considered in a more general sense than that of Euclidean geometry. © 2007 IEEE.

We introduce a characterization of contraction for bounded convex sets. For discrete-time multi-agent systems we provide an explicit upperbound on the rate of convergence to a consensus under the assumptions of contractiveness and (weak) connectedness (across an interval.) Convergence is shown to be exponential when either the system or the function characterizing the contraction is linear. Copyright © 2007 IFAC.

This work concerns the prediction of the response of an uncertain structure to a load of short duration. Assuming an ensemble of structures with small random variations about a nominal form, a mean impulse response can be found using only the modal density of the structure. The mean impulse response turns out to be the same as the response of an infinite structure: the response is calculated by taking into account the direct field only, without reflections. Considering the short duration of an impulsive loading, the approach is reasonable before the effect of the reverberant field becomes important. The convolution between the mean impulse response and the shock loading is solved in discrete time to calculate the response at the driving point and at remote points. Experimental and numerical examples are presented to validate the theory presented for simple structures such as beams, plates, and cylinders.

We solve the problem of steering a three-level quantum system from one eigen-state to another in minimum time and study its possible extension to the time-optimal control problem for a general n-level quantum system. For the three-level system we find all optimal controls by finding two types of symmetry in the problem: ℤ2 × S3 discrete symmetry and S1 continuous symmetry, and exploiting them to solve the problem through discrete reduction and symplectic reduction. We then study the geometry, in the same framework, which occurs in the time-optimal control of a general n-level quantum system. © 2007 IEEE.
