A boundary integral technique has been developed for the numerical simulation of the air flow for the Aaberg exhaust system. For the steady, ideal, irrotational air flow induced by a jet, the air velocity is an analytical function. The solution of the problem is formulated in the form of a boundary integral equation by seeking the solution of a mixed boundary-value problem of an analytical function based on the Riemann-Hilbert technique. The boundary integral equation is numerically solved by converting it into a system of linear algebraic equations, which are solved by the process of the Gaussian elimination. The air velocity vector at any point in the solution domain is then computed from the air velocity on the boundary of the solution domains.

Surface temperature measurements from two discs of a gas turbine compressor rig are used as boundary conditions for the transient conduction solution (inverse heat transfer analysis). The disc geometry is complex, and so the finite element method is used. There are often large radial temperature gradients on the discs, and the equations are therefore solved taking into account the dependence of thermal conductivity on temperature. The solution technique also makes use of a multigrid algorithm to reduce the solution time. This is particularly important since a large amount of data must be analyzed to obtain correlations of the heat transfer. The finite element grid is also used for a network analysis to calculate the radiant heat transfer in the cavity formed between the two compressor discs. The work discussed here proved particularly challenging as the disc temperatures were only measured at four different radial locations. Four methods of surface temperature interpolation are examined, together with their effect on the local heat fluxes. It is found that the choice of interpolation method depends on the available number of data points. Bessel interpolation gives the best results for four data points, whereas cubic splines are preferred when there are considerably more data points. The results from the analysis of the compressor rig data show that the heat transfer near the disc inner radius appears to be influenced by the central throughflow. However, for larger radii, the heat transfer from the discs and peripheral shroud is found to be consistent with that of a buoyancy-induced flow.

The use of boundary-layer-ingesting, embedded propulsion systems can result in inlet flow distortions where the interaction of the boundary layer vorticity and the inlet lip causes horseshoe vortex formation and the ingestion of streamwise vortices into the inlet. A previously-developed body-force-based fan modeling approach was used to assess the change in fan rotor shock noise generation and propagation in a boundary-layer-ingesting, serpentine inlet. This approach is employed here in a parametric study to assess the effects of inlet geometry parameters (offset-to-diameter ratio and downstream-to-upstream area ratio) on flow distortion and rotor shock noise. Mechanisms related to the vortical inlet structures were found to govern changes in the rotor shock noise generation and propagation. The vortex whose circulation is in the opposite direction to the fan rotation (counter-swirling vortex) increases incidence angles on the fan blades near the tip, enhancing noise generation. The vortex with circulation in the direction of fan rotation (co-swirling vortex) creates a region of subsonic relative flow near the blade tip radius which decreases the sound power propagated to the far-field. The parametric study revealed that the overall sound power level at the fan leading edge is set by the ingested streamwise circulation, and that for inlet designs in which the streamwise vortices are displaced away from the duct wall, the sound power at the upstream inlet plane increased by as much as 9 dB. By comparing the far-field noise results obtained to those for a conventional inlet, it is deduced that the changes in rotor shock noise are predominantly due to the ingestion of streamwise vorticity.

To investigate whether vortex generators can be an effective form of passive flow control an experimental investigation has been conducted in a small-scale wind tunnel. With specific emphasis on supersonic inlet applications flow separation was initiated using a combined terminal shock wave and subsonic diffuser: a configuration that has been developed as a part of a program to produce a more inlet-relevant flowfield in a small-scale wind tunnel than previous studies. When flow control was initially introduced little overall flow improvement was obtained as the losses tended to be redistributed instead of removed. It became apparent that there existed a strong coupling between the center-span flow and the corner flows. As a consequence, only when flow control was applied to both the corner flows and center-span flow was a significant flow improvement obtained. When corner suction and center-span vortex generators were employed in tandem separation was much reduced and wall-pressure and stagnation pressure were notably improved. As a result, when applied appropriately, it is thought that vortex generators do have the potential to reduce the dependence on boundary-layer bleed for the purpose of separation suppression. There is strong evidence that the transport processes in the buffer region of wall-bounded turbulence are common across various flow configurations, even in the embryonic turbulence in transition (Park et al., Phys. Fl. 24). We use this premise to develop off-wall boundary conditions for turbulent simulations. Boundary conditions are constructed from DNS databases using periodic minimal flow units and reduced order modeling. The DNS data was taken from a channel at Reτ=400 and a zero-pressure gradient transitional boundary layer (Sayadi et al., submitted to J. Fluid Mech.). Both types of boundary conditions were first tested on a DNS of the core of the channel flow with the aim of extending their application to LES and to spatially evolving flows.

Superhydrophobic surfaces are shown to be effective for surface drag reduction under laminar regime by both experiments and simulations (see for example, Ou and Rothstein, Phys. Fluids 17:103606, 2005). However, such drag reduction for fully developed turbulent flow maintaining the Cassie-Baxter state remains an open problem due to high shear rates and flow unsteadiness of turbulent boundary layer. Our work aims to develop an understanding of mechanisms leading to interface breaking and loss of gas pockets due to interactions with turbulent boundary layers. We take advantage of direct numerical simulation of turbulence with slip and no-slip patterned boundary conditions mimicking the superhydrophobic surface. In addition, we capture the dynamics of gas-water interface, by deriving a proper linearized boundary condition taking into account the surface tension of the interface and kinematic matching of interface deformation and normal velocity conditions on the wall. We will show results from our simulations predicting the dynamical behavior of gas pocket interfaces over a wide range of dimensionless surface tensions.

We examine the effects of varying the tunnel width to height ratio on the shock boundary layer interac-tion of an incident oblique shock with a turbulent boundary layer. The computational domain is a simpli-fied representation of typical wind tunnel experiments; the top wall of the tunnel is not modeled; only the flow conditions imposed by the shock are modeled on the top of the computational domain. A hy-pothesis of the expected effect of width to height ratio is presented and tested computationally. All flows are found to be three dimensional for the single shock strength range of width to height ratios considered. The effect of tunnel width is a function of the boundary layer thickness which decreases the effective width.
