YBaCuO-coated conductors offer great potential in terms of performance and cost-saving for superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL). A resistive SFCL based on coated conductors can be made from several tapes connected in parallel or in series. Ideally, the current and voltage are shared uniformly by the tapes when quench occurs. However, due to the non-uniformity of property of the tapes and the relative positions of the tapes, the currents and the voltages of the tapes are different. In this paper, a numerical model is developed to investigate the current and voltage sharing problem for the resistive SFCL. This model is able to simulate the dynamic response of YBCO tapes in normal and quench conditions. Firstly, four tapes with different Jc 's and n values in E-J power law are connected in parallel to carry the fault current. The model demonstrates how the currents are distributed among the four tapes. These four tapes are then connected in series to withstand the line voltage. In this case, the model investigates the voltage sharing between the tapes. Several factors that would affect the process of quenches are discussed including the field dependency of Jc, the magnetic coupling between the tapes and the relative positions of the tapes. © 2010 IEEE.

Two control algorithms have been developed for a minimally invasive axial-flow ventricular assist device (VAD) for placement in the descending aorta. The purpose of the device is to offload the left ventricle and to augment lower body perfusion in patients with moderate congestive heart failure. The VAD consists of an intra-aortic impeller with a built-in permanent magnet rotor and an extra-aortic stator. The control algorithms, which use pressure readings upstream and downstream of the VAD to determine the pump status, have been tested in a mock circulatory system under two conditions, namely with or without afterload sensitivity. The results give an insight into controller design for an intra-aortic blood pump working in series with the heart.

This paper presents an improvement of an IGBT gate drive implementing Active Voltage Control (AVC), and investigates the impact of various parameters affecting its performance. The effects of the bandwidths of various elements and the gains of AVC are shown in simulation and experimentally. Also, the paper proposes connecting a small Active Snubber between the IGBT collector and its gate integrated within the AVC. The effect of this snubber on enhancing the stability of the gate drive is demonstrated. It will be shown that using a wide bandwidth operational amplifier and integrating the Active Snubber within the gate drive reduces the minimum gate resistor required to achieve stability of the controller. Consequently, the response time of the IGBT to control signals is significantly reduced, the switching losses then can be minimised and, hence, the performance of gate drive as whole is improved. This reflects positively on turn-off and turn-on transitions achieving voltage sharing between the IGBTs connected in series to construct a higher voltage switch, making series IGBTs a feasible practice. ©2008 IEEE.

The Tandem PiN Schottky (TPS) rectifier features lowly-doped p-layers in both active and termination regions, and is applied in 600-V rating for the first time. In the active region, the Schottky contact is in series connection with a transparent p-layer, leading to a superior forward performance than the conventional diodes. In addition, due to the benefit of moderate hole injection from the p-layer, the TPS offers a better trade-off between the on-state voltage and the switching speed. The active p-layer also helps to stabilise the Schottky contact, and hence the electrical data distributions are more concentrated. Regarding the floating p-layer in the termination region, its purpose is to reduce the peak electric fields, and the TPS demonstrates a high breakdown voltage with a compact termination width, less than 70% of the state-of-the-art devices on the market. Experimental results have shown that the 600-V TPS rectifier has an ultra-low on-state voltage of 0.98 V at 250 A/cm 2, a fast turn-off time of 75 ns by the standard RG1 test (I F=0.5A, I R=1A, and I RR=0.25A) and a breakdown voltage over 720 V. It is noteworthy that the p-layers in the active and termination regions can be formed at no extra cost for the use of self-alignment process. © 2012 IEEE.

DYN3D reactor dynamics nodal diffusion code was originally developed for the analysis of Light Water Reactors. In this paper, we demonstrate the feasibility of using DYN3D for modeling of fast spectrum reactors. A homogenized cross sections data library was generated using continuous energy Monte-Carlo code Serpent which provides significant modeling flexibility compared with traditional deterministic lattice transport codes and tolerable execution time. A representative sodium cooled fast reactor core was modeled with the Serpent-DYN3D code sequence and the results were compared with those produced by ERANOS code and with a 3D full core Monte-Carlo solution. Very good agreement between the codes was observed for the core integral parameters and power distribution suggesting that the DYN3D code with cross section library generated using Serpent can be reliably used for the analysis of fast reactors. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Active Voltage Control (AVC) is an implementation of classic Proportional-Derivative (PD) control and multi-loop feedback control to force IGBT to follow a pre-set switching trajectory. The initial objective of AVC was mainly to synchronise the switching of IGBTs connected in series so as to realise voltage balancing between devices. For a single IGBT switching, the AVC reference needs further optimisation. Thus, a predictive manner of AVC reference generation is required to cope with the nonlinear IGBT switching parameters while performing low loss switching. In this paper, an improved AVC structure is adopted along with a revised reference which accommodates the IGBT nonlinearity during switching and is predictive based on current being switched. Experimental and simulation results show that close control of a single IGBT switching is realised. It is concluded that good performance can be obtained, but the proposed method needs careful stability analysis for parameter choice. © 2013 IEEE.

Simple process models are applied to predict microstructural changes due to the thermal cycle imposed in friction stir welding. A softening model developed for heat-treatable aluminium alloys of the 6000 series is applied to the aerospace alloy 2014 in the peak-aged (T6) condition. It is found that the model is not readily applicable to alloy 2024 in the naturally aged (T3) temper, but the softening behaviour can still be described semi-empirically. Both analytical and numerical (finite element) thermal models are used to predict the thermal histories in trial welds. These are coupled to the microstructural model to investigate: (a) the hardness profile across the welded plate; (b) alloy softening ahead of the approaching welding tool. By incorporating the softening model applied to 6082-T6 alloy, the hardness profile of friction stir welds in dissimilar alloys is also predicted. © AFM, EDP Sciences 2005.
