The present study details the conceptual design for a 220-passenger laminar-flying-wing aircraft, utilising distributed suction, with a cruise Mach number of 0.67, over a range of 9000 km. The estimated fuel burn is 13.9 g/pax.km, demonstrating substantial gains relative to current, conventional, passenger aircraft. For comparison, a conventional aircraft with a high-mounted, unswept, wing is designed for the same mission specification, and is shown to have a fuel burn of 15 g/pax.km. Despite significant aerodynamic efficiency gains, the fuel burn of the laminar flying wing is only marginally better as it suffers from a poor cruise engine efficiency and is much heavier. Although it is widely believed that reinforcement learning is a suitable tool for describing behavioral learning, the mechanisms by which it can be implemented in networks of spiking neurons are not fully understood. Here, we show that different learning rules emerge from a policy gradient approach depending on which features of the spike trains are assumed to influence the reward signals, i.e., depending on which neural code is in effect. We use the framework of Williams (1992) to derive learning rules for arbitrary neural codes. For illustration, we present policy-gradient rules for three different example codes - a spike count code, a spike timing code and the most general "full spike train" code - and test them on simple model problems. In addition to classical synaptic learning, we derive learning rules for intrinsic parameters that control the excitability of the neuron. The spike count learning rule has structural similarities with established Bienenstock-Cooper-Munro rules. If the distribution of the relevant spike train features belongs to the natural exponential family, the learning rules have a characteristic shape that raises interesting prediction problems.

This paper investigates the fundamental trade-offs involved in designing energy-regenerative suspensions, in particular, focusing on efficiency of power extraction and its effect on vehicle dynamics and control. It is shown that typical regenerative devices making use of linear-to-rotational elements can be modelled as a parallel arrangement of an inerter and a dissipative admittance. Taking account of typical adjustable parameters of the generator, it is shown, for a given suspension damping coefficient, that the power efficiency ratio scales with inertance. For a typical passenger vehicle, it is shown that there is a feasible compromise, namely that good efficiency is achievable with an inertance value that is not detrimental to vehicle performance. A prototype is designed and tested with a resistive termination and experimental results show good agreement between ideal and experimental admittances. The possibility to use dynamic (rather than purely resistive) loads to improve vehicle control without limiting the energy recovery is discussed. © 2013 Copyright Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.

This paper presents a three-dimensional comprehensive model for the calculation of vibration in a building based on pile-foundation due to moving trains in a nearby underground tunnel. The model calculates the Power Spectral Density (PSD) of the building's responses due to trains moving on floating-slab tracks with random roughness. The tunnel and its surrounding soil are modelled as a cylindrical shell embedded in half-space using the well-known PiP model. The building and its piles are modelled as a 2D frame using the dynamic stiffness matrix. Coupling between the foundation and the ground is performed using the theory of joining subsystems in the frequency domain. The latter requires calculations of transfer functions of a half-space model. A convenient choice based on the thin-layer method is selected in this work for the calculations of responses in a half-space due to circular strip loadings. The coupling considers the influence of the building's dynamics on the incident wave field from the tunnel, but ignores any reflections of building's waves from the tunnel. The derivation made in the paper shows that the incident vibration field at the building's foundation gets modified by a term reflecting the coupling and the dynamics of the building and its foundation. The comparisons presented in the paper show that the dynamics of the building and its foundation significantly change the incident vibration field from the tunnel and they can lead to loss of accuracy of predictions if not considered in the calculation.
