The properties of amorphous carbon (a-C) deposited using a filtered cathodic vacuum arc as a function of the ion energy and substrate temperature are reported. The sp3 fraction was found to strongly depend on the ion energy, giving a highly sp3 bonded a-C denoted as tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C) at ion energies around 100 eV. The optical band gap was found to follow similar trends to other diamondlike carbon films, varying almost linearly with sp2 fraction. The dependence of the electronic properties are discussed in terms of models of the electronic structure of a-C. The structure of ta-C was also strongly dependent on the deposition temperature, changing sharply to sp2 above a transition temperature, T1, of ≈200°C. Furthermore, T1 was found to decrease with increasing ion energy. Most film properties, such as compressive stress and plasmon energy, were correlated to the sp3 fraction. However, the optical and electrical properties were found to undergo a more gradual transition with the deposition temperature which we attribute to the medium range order of sp2 sites. We attribute the variation in film properties with the deposition temperature to diffusion of interstitials to the surface above T1 due to thermal activation, leading to the relaxation of density in context of a growth model. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

We present for the first time a comprehensive study of the static and dynamic properties of a coolerless tunable three-section DBR laser. Wavelength tuning and thermal drift under uncooled conditions are investigated. Variance of modulation bandwidth with temperature rise and wavelength control is studied, and then verified by uncooled direct modulation performance with clear open eye diagrams. Satisfactory direct modulation is demonstrated at bit rate of up to 6Gbit/s, which is believed to be the fastest out of devices of similar structure so far.

The contribution of the relative volumes of mineral and collagen to the nanomechanical behavior of articular calcified cartilage is explored using nanoindentation, quantitative backscattered electron imaging, and finite element analysis. Elastic modulus generally increases with mineral volume fraction. In highly mineralized tissues, the mineral occupation of water space significantly increases modulus with addition of little mineral. Mineral and organic phases were modeled using Hashin-Shtrikman composite bounds, calculated as a function of mineral volume fraction. Modulus values fall between the Hashin-Shtrikman bounds, indicating some intermediate degree of mineral phase connectivity. Such connectivity in ACC is greater than that achieved in bone and results from uniform collagen orientation and large volume of water space available for mineral occupation.

The microstructure and mechanical properties of sintered stainless steel powder, of composition AISI 420, have been measured. Ball-milled powder comprising nanoscale grains was sintered to bulk specimens by two alternative routes: hot-pressing and microlaser sintering. The laser-sintered alloy has a porosity of 6% and comprises a mixture of delta ferrite and tempered martensite, and the relative volume fraction varies along the axis of the specimen due to a thermal cycle that evolves with progressive deposition. In contrast, the hot-pressed alloy has a porosity of 0.7% and exhibits a martensitic lath structure with carbide particles at the boundaries of the prior austenite grains. These differences in microstructure lead to significant differences in mechanical properties. For example, the uniaxial tensile strength of the hot-pressed material is one-half of its compressive strength, due to void initiation at the carbide particles at the prior austenite grain boundaries. Nanoindentation measurements reveal a size effect in hardness and also reveal the sensitivity of hardness to the presence of mechanical polishing and electropolishing. © 2011 Acta Materialia Inc. We have studied the structure and the room temperature luminescence of erbium silicate thin films deposited by rf magnetron sputtering. Films deposited on silicon oxide layers are characterized by good structural properties and excellent stability. The optical properties of these films are strongly improved by rapid thermal annealing processes performed in the range of temperature 800-1250 °C. In fact through the reduction of the defect density of the material, a very efficient room temperature photoluminescence at 1535 nm is obtained. We have also investigated the influence of the annealing ambient, by finding that treatments in O2 atmosphere are significantly more efficient in improving the optical properties of the material with respect to processes in N2. Upconversion effects become effective only when erbium silicate is excited with high pump powers. The evidence that all Er atoms (about 1022 cm-3) in erbium silicate films are optically active suggests interesting perspectives for optoelectronic applications of this material. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. The structural properties and the room temperature luminescence of Er 2O3 thin films deposited by magnetron sputtering have been studied. In spite of the well-known high reactivity of rare earth oxides towards silicon, films characterized by good morphological properties have been obtained by using a SiO2 interlayer between the film and the silicon substrate. The evolution of the properties of the Er2O3 films due to thermal annealing processes in oxygen ambient performed at temperatures in the range of 800-1200°C has been investigated in detail. The existence of well defined annealing conditions (rapid treatments at a temperature of 1100°C or higher) allowing to avoid the occurrence of extensive chemical reactions with the oxidized substrate has been demonstrated; under these conditions, the thermal process has a beneficial effect on both structural and optical properties of the film, and an increase of the photoluminescence (PL) intensity by about a factor of 40 with respect to the as-deposited material has been observed. The enhanced efficiency of the photon emission process has been correlated with the longer lifetime of the PL signal. Finally, the conditions leading to a reaction of Er2O3 with the substrate have been also identified, and evidences about the formation of silicate-like phases have been collected. © 2006 American Institute of Physics.

The pressure behavior of Raman frequencies and line widths of crystalline core-amorphous shell silicon nanowires (SiNWs) with two different core-to-shell ratio thicknesses was studied at pressures up to 8 GPa. The obtained isothermal compressibility (bulk modulus) of SiNWs with a core-to-shell ratio of about 1.8 is ∼20% higher (lower) than reported values for bulk Si. For SiNWs with smaller core-to-shell ratios, a plastic deformation of the shell was observed together with a strain relaxation. A significant increase in the full width at half-maximum of the Raman LTO-peak due to phonon decay was used to determine the critical pressure at which LTO-phonons decay into LO + TA phonons. Our results reveal that this critical pressure in strained core-shell SiNWs (∼4 GPa) is different from the reported value for bulk Si (∼7 GPa), whereas no change is observed for relaxed core-shell SiNWs. © 2013 American Chemical Society.

La0.7Ca0.3MnO3/Mn3O4 composites can be synthesized in one step by thermal treatment of a spray-dried precursor, instead of mixing pre-synthesized powders. Another advantage of this composite system is that a long sintering step can be used without leading to significant modification of the manganite composition. The percolation threshold is reached at ∼20 vol% of manganite phase. The 77 K low field magnetoresistance is enhanced to ∼11% at 0.15 T when the composition is close to the percolation threshold. © 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Tensile and compression properties of self-reinforced poly(ethylene terephthalate) (SrPET) composites has been investigated. SrPET composites or all-polymer composites have improved mechanical properties compared to the bulk polymer but with maintained recyclability. In contrast to traditional carbon/glass fibre reinforced composites, SrPET composites are very ductile, resulting in high failure strains without softening or catastrophic failure. In tension, the SrPET composites behave linear elastically until the fibre-matrix interface fails, at which point the stiffness starts decreasing. As the material is further strained, strain hardening occurs and the specimen finally fails at a global strain above 10%. In compression, the composite initially fails through fibre yielding, and at higher strains through fibre bending. The stress-strain response is reminiscent of an elastic-perfectly plastic material with a high strain to failure (typically over 10%). This indicates that SrPET composites are not only candidates as semi-structural composites but also as highly efficient energy absorbing materials. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
