The successful utilization of an array of silicon on insulator complementary metal oxide semiconductor (SOICMOS) micro thermal shear stress sensors for flow measurements at macro-scale is demonstrated. The sensors use CMOS aluminum metallization as the sensing material and are embedded in low thermal conductivity silicon oxide membranes. They have been fabricated using a commercial 1 μm SOI-CMOS process and a post-CMOS DRIE back etch. The sensors with two different sizes were evaluated. The small sensors (18.5 ×18.5 μm2 sensing area on 266 × 266 μm2 oxide membrane) have an ultra low power (100 °C temperature rise at 6mW) and a small time constant of only 5.46 μs which corresponds to a cut-off frequency of 122 kHz. The large sensors (130 × 130 μm2 sensing area on 500 × 500 μm2 membrane) have a time constant of 9.82 μs (cut-off frequency of 67.9 kHz). The sensors' performance has proven to be robust under transonic and supersonic flow conditions. Also, they have successfully identified laminar, separated, transitional and turbulent boundary layers in a low speed flow. © 2008 IEEE.

Here we present a novel signal processing technique for a square wave thermally-modulated carbon black/polymer composite chemoresistor. The technique consists of only two mathematical operations: summing the off-transient and on-transient conductance signals; and subtracting the steady-state conductance signal. A single carbon black/polyvinylpyrrolidone composite chemo -resistor was fabricated and used to demonstrate the validity of the technique. Classification of water, methanol and ethanol vapours was successfully performed using only the peak time of the resultant curves. Quantification of the different vapours was also possible using the height of the peaks, because it was linearly proportional to concentration. This technique does not require zero-gas calibration and thus is superior to previously reported methods. ©2009 IEEE.

This work reports on thermal characterization of SOI (silicon on insulator) CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor) MEMS (micro electro mechanical system) gas sensors using a thermoreflectance (TR) thermography system. The sensors were fabricated in a CMOS foundry and the micro hot-plate structures were created by back-etching the CMOS processed wafers in a MEMS foundry using DRIE (deep reactive ion etch) process. The calibration and experimental details of the thermoreflectance based thermal imaging setup, used for these micro hot-plate gas sensor structures, are presented. Experimentally determined temperature of a micro hot-plate sensor, using TR thermography and built-in silicon resistive temperature sensor, is compared with that estimated using numerical simulations. The results confirm that TR based thermal imaging technique can be used to determine surface temperature of CMOS MEMS devices with a high accuracy. © 2010 EDA Publishing/THERMINIC.

A novel type of linear extensometer with exceptionally high resolution of 4 nm based on MEMS resonant strain sensors bonded on steel and operating in a vacuum package is presented. The tool is implemented by means of a steel thin bar that can be pre-stressed in tension within two fixing anchors. The extension of the bar is detected by using two vacuum-packaged resonant MEMS double- ended tuning fork (DETF) sensors bonded on the bar with epoxy glue, one of which is utilized for temperature compensation. Both sensors are driven by a closed loop self-oscillating transresistance amplifier feedback scheme implemented on a PCB (Printed Circuit Board). On the same board, a microcontroller-based frequency measurement circuit is also implemented, which is able to count the square wave fronts of the MEMS oscillator output with a resolution of 20 nsec. The system provides a frequency noise of 0.2 Hz corresponding to an extension resolution of 4 nm for the extensometer. Nearly perfect temperature compensation of the frequency output is achieved in the temperature range 20-35 C using the reference sensor. © 2011 IEEE.

For more than 20 years researchers have been interested in developing micro-gas sensors based on silicon technology. Most of the reported devices are based on micro-hotplates, however they use materials that are not CMOS compatible, and therefore are not suitable for large volume manufacturing. Furthermore, they do not allow the circuitry to be integrated on to the chip. CMOS compatible devices have been previously reported. However, these use polysilicon as the heater material, which has long term stability problems at high temperatures. Here we present low power, low cost SOI CMOS NO2 sensors, based on high stability single crystal silicon P+ micro-heaters platforms, capable of measuring gas concentrations down to 0.1 ppm. We have integrated a thin tungsten molybdenum oxide layer as a sensing material with a foundry-standard SOI CMOS micro-hotplate and tested this to NO2. We believe these devices have the potential for use as robust, very low power consumption, low cost gas sensors. © 2011 American Institute of Physics.

Two near-ultraviolet (UV) sensors based on solution-grown zinc oxide (ZnO) nanowires (NWs) which are only sensitive to photo-excitation at or below 400 nm wavelength have been fabricated and characterized. Both devices keep all processing steps, including nanowire growth, under 100 °C for compatibility with a wide variety of substrates. The first device type uses a single optical lithography step process to allow simultaneous in situ horizontal NW growth from solution and creation of symmetric ohmic contacts to the nanowires. The second device type uses a two-mask optical lithography process to create asymmetric ohmic and Schottky contacts. For the symmetric ohmic contacts, at a voltage bias of 1 V across the device, we observed a 29-fold increase in current in comparison to dark current when the NWs were photo-excited by a 400 nm light-emitting diode (LED) at 0.15 mW cm(-2) with a relaxation time constant (τ) ranging from 50 to 555 s. For the asymmetric ohmic and Schottky contacts under 400 nm excitation, τ is measured between 0.5 and 1.4 s over varying time internals, which is ~2 orders of magnitude faster than the devices using symmetric ohmic contacts.

A novel film bulk acoustic resonator (FBAR) with two resonant frequencies which have opposite reactions to temperature changes has been designed. The two resonant modes respond differently to changes in temperature and pressure, with the frequency shift being linearly correlated with temperature and pressure changes. By utilizing the FBAR's sealed back trench as a cavity, an on-chip single FBAR sensor suitable for measuring pressure and temperature simultaneously is proposed and demonstrated. The experimental results show that the pressure coefficient of frequency for the lower frequency peak of the FBAR sensors is approximately -17.4 ppm kPa-1, while that for the second peak is approximately -6.1 ppm kPa-1, both of them being much more sensitive than other existing pressure sensors. This dual mode on-chip pressure sensor is simple in structure and operation, can be fabricated at very low cost, and yet requires no specific package, therefore has great potential for applications. © 2012 IOP Publishing Ltd.

This paper presents a novel platform for the formation of cost-effective PCB-integrated optical waveguide sensors. The sensor design relies on the use of multimode polymer waveguides that can be formed directly on standard PCBs and commercially-available chemical dyes, enabling the integration of all essential sensor components (electronic, photonic, chemical) on low-cost substrates. Moreover, it enables the detection of multiple analytes from a single device by employing waveguide arrays functionalised with different chemical dyes. The devices can be manufactured with conventional methods of the PCB industry, such as solder-reflow processes and pick-and-place assembly techniques. As a proof of principle, a PCB-integrated ammonia gas sensor is fabricated on a FR4 substrate. The sensor operation relies on the change of the optical transmission characteristics of chemically functionalised optical waveguides in the presence of ammonia molecules. The fabrication and assembly of the sensor unit, as well as fundamental simulation and characterisation studies, are presented. The device achieves a sensitivity of approximately 30 ppm and a linear response up to 600 ppm at room temperature. Finally, the potential to detect multiple analytes from a single device is demonstrated using principal-component analysis. © 1983-2012 IEEE.

An optical and irreversible temperature sensor (e.g., a time-temperature integrator) is reported based on a mechanically embossed chiral-nematic polymer network. The polymer consists of a chemical and a physical (hydrogen-bonded) network and has a reflection band in the visible wavelength range. The sensors are produced by mechanical embossing at elevated temperatures. A relative large compressive deformation (up to 10%) is obtained inducing a shift to shorter wavelength of the reflection band (>30 nm). After embossing, a temperature sensor is obtained that exhibits an irreversible optical response. A permanent color shift to longer wavelengths (red) is observed upon heating of the polymer material to temperatures above the glass transition temperature. It is illustrated that the observed permanent color shift is related to shape memory in the polymer material. The films can be printed on a foil, thus showing that these sensors are potentially interesting as time-temperature integrators for applications in food and pharmaceutical products. Recent work has investigated the use of O2 concentration in the intake manifold as a control variable for diesel engines. It has been recognised as a very good indicator of NOX emissions especially during transient operation, however, much of the work is concentrated on estimating the O2 concentration as opposed to measuring it. This work investigates Universal Exhaust Gas Oxygen (UEGO) sensors and their potential to be used for such measurements. In previous work it was shown that these sensors can be operated in a controlled pressure environment such that their response time is of the order 10ms. In this paper, it is shown how the key causes of variation (and therefore potential sources of error) in sensor output, namely, pressure and temperature are largely mitigated by operating the sensors in such an environment. Experiments were undertaken on a representative light duty diesel engine using modified UEGO sensors in the intake and exhaust system. Results from other fast emissions measuring equipment are also shown and it is seen that the UEGO sensors are capable of giving an accurate measurement of O2 and EGR. A custom designed microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) micro-hotplate, capable of operating at high temperatures (up to 700 C), was used to thermo-optically characterize fluorescent temperature-sensitive nanosensors. The nanosensors, 550 nm in diameter, are composed of temperature-sensitive rhodamine B (RhB) fluorophore which was conjugated to an inert silica sol-gel matrix. Temperature-sensitive nanosensors were dispersed and dried across the surface of the MEMS micro-hotplate, which was mounted in the slide holder of a fluorescence confocal microscope. Through electrical control of the MEMS micro-hotplate, temperature induced changes in fluorescence intensity of the nanosensors was measured over a wide temperature range. The fluorescence response of all nanosensors dispersed across the surface of the MEMS device was found to decrease in an exponential manner by 94%, when the temperature was increased from 25 C to 145 C. The fluorescence response of all dispersed nanosensors across the whole surface of the MEMS device and individual nanosensors, using line profile analysis, were not statistically different (p < 0.05). The MEMS device used for this study could prove to be a reliable, low cost, low power and high temperature micro-hotplate for the thermo-optical characterisation of sub-micron sized particles. The temperature-sensitive nanosensors could find potential application in the measurement of temperature in biological and micro-electrical systems. The Authors. © 2013 Published by Elsevier B.V. This paper presents for the first time the performance of a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) p-n thermodiode, which can operate in an extremely wide temperature range of 200°C to 700°C while maintaining its linearity. The thermodiode is embedded in a thin dielectric membrane underneath a tungsten microheater, which allows the diode characterization at very high temperature (> 800°C). The effect of the junction area (Aj) on the thermodiode linearity, sensitivity and self-heating is experimentally and theoretically investigated. Results on the long-term diode stability at high temperature are also reported. © 2013 IEEE.

The control of NOX emissions by exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) is of widespread application. However, despite dramatic improvements in all aspects of engine control, the subtle mixing processes that determine the cylinder-to-cylinder distribution of the recirculated gas often results in a mal-distribution that is still an issue for the engine designer and calibrator. In this paper we demonstrate the application of a relatively straightforward technique for the measurement of the absolute and relative dilution quantity in both steady state and transient operation. This was achieved by the use of oxygen sensors based on standard UEGO (universal exhaust gas oxygen) sensors but packaged so as to give good frequency response (∼ 10 ms time constant) and be completely insensitivity to the sample pressure and temperature. Measurements can be made at almost any location of interest, for example exhaust and inlet manifolds as well as EGR path(s), with virtually no flow disturbance. At the same time, the measurements yield insights into air-path dynamics. We argue that "dilution", as indicated by the deviation of the oxygen concentration from that of air, is a more appropriate parameter than EGR rate in the context of NOX control, especially for diesel engines. Experimental results are presented for the EGR distribution in a current production light duty 4-cylinder diesel engine in which significant differences were found in the proportion of the recirculated gas that reached each cylinder. Even the individual inlet runners of the cylinders exhibited very different dilution rates - differences of nearly 50% were observed at some conditions. An application of such data may be in the improvement of calibration and validation of CFD and other modelling techniques. Copyright © 2014 SAE International.
