The motivation for our work is to identify a space for silicon carbide (SiC) devices in the silicon (Si) world. This paper presents a detailed experimental investigation of the switching behaviour of silicon and silicon carbide transistors (a JFET and a cascode device comprising a Si-MOSFET and a SiC-JFET). The experimental method is based on a clamped inductive load chopper circuit that puts considerable stress on the device and increases the transient power dissipation. A precise comparison of switching behaviour of Si and SiC devices on similar terms is the novelty of our work. The cascode is found to be an attractive fast switching device, capable of operating in two different configurations whose switching equivalent circuits are proposed here. The effect of limited dv/dt of the Si-MOSFET on the switching of the SiC-JFET in a cascode is also critically analysed.

Rogowski transducers have become an increasingly popular method of measuring current within prototyping applications and power electronics equipment due to their significant advantages compared to an equivalent current transformer. This paper presents a simple and practical construction technique of high-performance, low-cost Rogowski transducers and accompanying circuitry. Experimental tests were carried out to show the validity of the proposed construction technique. © 2005 IEEE.

The development of long-length, high current density Bi2Sr 2CaCu2Ox wires and (RE)Ba2Cu 3Oy coated conductors has now advanced such that superconducting magnets for energy applications and high field applications are progressing rapidly. Europe, along with China, Korea the US and Japan is an important player in the development and exploitation of High Temperature Superconductors in practical applications. © 2013 IEEE.

Are there any benefits in allowing orders and products to be able to manage their own progress through a supply chain? The notion of associating (and even embedding) information management and reasoning capabilities with a physical product has been discussed for over ten years now. This talk will review the notions of product intelligence and examine the rationales for these models and the practicality of their implementation. Both theoretical and practical issues associated with product intelligence will be examined referencing a number of trial deployments in manufacturing, logistics and aerospace equipment servicing. © 2012 IFAC.
