Direct formation of large-area carbon thin films on gallium nitride by chemical vapor deposition without metallic catalysts is demonstrated. A high flow of ammonia is used to stabilize the surface of the GaN (0001)/sapphire substrate during the deposition at 950°C. Various characterization methods verify that the synthesized thin films are largely sp 2 bonded, macroscopically uniform, and electrically conducting. The carbon thin films possess optical transparencies comparable to that of exfoliated graphene. This paper offers a viable route toward the use of carbon-based materials for future transparent electrodes in III-nitride optoelectronics, such as GaN-based light emitting diodes and laser diodes. © 1988-2012 IEEE.

We report the effects of thermal annealing performed in N2 or O2 ambient at 1200 °C on the structural and optical properties of Er silicate films having different compositions (Er2Si O 5,Er2 Si2 O7, and their mixture). We demonstrate that the chemical composition of the stoichiometric films is preserved after the thermal treatments. All different crystalline structures formed after the thermal annealing are identified. Thermal treatments in O 2 lead to a strong enhancement of the photoluminescence intensity, owing to the efficient reduction of defect density. In particular the highest optical efficiency is associated to Er ions in the α phase of Er 2 Si2 O7. © 2008 American Institute of Physics.

The optical, structural and electrical properties of poly(3,4- ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(4-styrenesulfonic acid) (PEDOT:PSS) thin films printed by roll-to-roll gravure have been investigated. Corona treatment has been applied to enhance the adhesion of PEDOT:PSS on PolyEthylene Terephthalate (PET) web. It has been found that there was a stronger in-depth surface modification of PET with the increase of corona efficiency; however, the adhesion of PEDOT:PSS was not actually affected. Also, Spectroscopic Ellipsometry and Atomic Force Microscopy have been used to extract information on the mechanisms that define PEDOT:PSS properties. The increase of the drying temperature of the PEDOT:PSS films has been found to reduce the remaining water inside the films and lead to the decrease of the PEDOT:PSS particles size. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. Focused laser micromachining in an optical microscope system is used to prototype packages for optoelectronic devices and to investigate new materials with potential applications in packaging. Micromachined thin films are proposed as mechanical components to locate fibres and other optical and electrical components on opto-assemblies. This paper reports prototype structures which are micromachined in silicon carbide to produce beams 5 μm thick by (i) laser cutting a track in a SiC coated Si wafer, (ii) undercutting by anisotropic silicon etching using KOH in water, and (iii) trimming if necessary with the laser system. This approach has the advantage of fast turn around and proof of concept. Mechanical test data are obtained from the prototype SiC beam package structures by testing with a stylus profilometer. The Youngs modulus obtained for chemical vapour deposited silicon carbide is 360 +/- 50 GPa indicating that it is a promising material for packaging applications.

A cross-sectional transmission electron microscope study of the low density layers at the surface and at the substrate-film interface of tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C) films grown on (001) silicon substrates is presented. Spatially resolved electron energy loss spectroscopy is used to determine the bonding and composition of a tetrahedral amorphous carbon film with nanometre spatial resolution. For a ta-C film grown with a substrate bias of -300 V, an interfacial region approximately 5 nm wide is present in which the carbon is sp2 bonded and is mixed with silicon and oxygen from the substrate. An sp2 bonded layer observed at the surface of the film is 1.3 ± 0.3 nm thick and contains no detectable impurities. It is argued that the sp2 bonded surface layer is intrinsic to the growth process, but that the sp2 bonding in the interfacial layer at the substrate may be related to the presence of oxygen from the substrate.

Using spcctroscopic ellipsometry (SE), we have measured the optical properties and optical gaps of a series of amorphous carbon (a-C) films ∼ 100-300 Å thick, prepared using a filtered beam of C+ ions from a cathodic arc. Such films exhibit a wide range of sp3-bonded carbon contents from 20 to 76 at.%, as measured by electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). The Taue optical gaps of the a-C films increase monotonically from 0.65 eV for 20 at.% sp3 C to 2.25 eV for 76 at.% sp3 C. Spectra in the ellipsometric angles (1.5-5 eV) have been analyzed using different effective medium theories (EMTs) applying a simplified optical model for the dielectric function of a-C, assuming a composite material with sp2 C and sp3 C components. The most widely used EMT, namely that of Bruggeman (with three-dimensionally isotropic screening), yields atomic fractions of sp3 C that correlate monotonically with those obtained from EELS. The results of the SE analysis, however, range from 10 to 25 at.% higher than those from EELS. In fact, we have found that the volume percent sp3 C from SE using the Bruggeman EMT shows good numerical agreement with the atomic percent sp3 C from EELS. The SE-EELS discrepancy has been reduced by using an optical model in which the dielectric function of the a-C is determined as a volume-fraction-weighted average of the dielectric functions of the sp2 C and sp3 C components. © 1998 Elsevier Science S.A.

Using spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE), we have measured the optical properties of amorphous carbon (a-C) films ∼ 10-30 nm thick prepared using a filtered beam of C+ ions from a cathodic arc. Such films exhibit a wide range of sp3-bonded carbon contents from 20 to 76 at.% as measured by electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), and a range of optical gaps from 0.65 eV (20 at.% sp3 C) to 2.25 eV (76 at.% sp3 C) as measured by SE. SE data from 1.5 to 5 eV have been analyzed by applying the most widely used effective medium theory (EMT) namely that of Bruggeman with isotropic screening, assuming a model of the material as a composite with sp2 C and sp3 C components. Although the atomic fractions of sp3 C deduced by SE with the Bruggeman EMT correlate monotonically with those obtained by EELS, the SE results range from 10 to 25 at.% higher. The possible origins of this discrepancy are discussed within the framework of an optical composite. Improved agreement between SE and EELS is obtained by employing a simple form for the EMT, in which the effective dielectric function is determined as a volume-fraction-weighted average of the dielectric functions of the two components. © 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. Tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C) thin films are a promising material for use as biocompatible interfaces in applications such as in-vivo biosensors. However, the functionalization of ta-C film surface, which is a pre-requisite for biosensors, remains a big challenge due to its chemical inertness. We have investigated the bio-functionalization of ta-C films fabricated under specific physical conditions through the covalent attachment of functional biomolecular probes of peptide nucleic acid (PNA) to ta-C films, and the effect of fabrication conditions on the bio-functionalization. The study showed that the functional bimolecular probes such as protected long-chain ω-unsaturated amine (TFAAD) can be covalently attached to the ta-C surface through a well-defined structure. With the given fabrication process, electrochemical methods can be applied to the detection of biomolecular interaction, which establishes the basis for the development of stable, label-free biosensors. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. Er3+-doped glass-polymer composite thin films fabricated using combinatorial pulsed laser deposition
Resumo:
Siloxane Polymer exhibits low loss in the 800-1500 nm range which varies between 0.01 and 0.66 dB cm1. It is for such low loss the material is one of the most promising candidates in the application of engineering passive and active optical devices [1, 2]. However, current polymer fabrication techniques do not provide a methodology which allows high structurally solubility of Er3+ ions in siloxane matrix. To address this problem, Yang et al.[3] demonstrated a channel waveguide amplifier with Nd 3+-complex doped polymer, whilst Wong and co-workers[4] employed Yb3+ and Er3+ co-doped polymer hosts for increasing the gain. In some recent research we demonstrated pulsed laser deposition of Er-doped tellurite glass thin films on siloxane polymer coated silica substrates[5]. Here an alternative methodology for multilayer polymer-glass composite thin films using Er3+ - Yb3+ co-doped phosphate modified tellurite (PT) glass and siloxane polymer is proposed by adopting combinatorial pulsed laser deposition (PLD). © 2011 IEEE.

This paper will review the different U. V. lamp photo-CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition) techniques which have been utilized for the production of highly photoconductive hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) thin films. Most of these require the transmission of U. V. light through a window into the reaction vessel; leading to unwanted U. V. light absorption by the window and the a-Si:H film which tends to form on its inner surface. A deposition system developed in our laboratory will also be described, which circumvents these problems by incorporating a windowless discharge lamp into the reaction vessel.

Zinc oxide (ZnO) thin films were deposited at high rates ( > 50 nm min-1) using a unique technique known as high target utilisation sputtering (HiTUS). The films obtained possess good crystallographic orientation, low surface roughness, very low stress and excellent piezoelectric properties. We have utilised the films to develop highly sensitive biosensors based on thickness longitudinal mode (TLM) thin film bulk acoustic resonators (FBARs). The FBARs have the fundamental TLM at a frequency near 1.5 GHz and quality factor Q higher than 1,000, which is one of the largest values ever reported for ZnO-based FBARs. Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA) solutions with different concentrations were placed on the top of different sets of identical FBARs and their responses to mass-loading from physically adsorbed protein coatings were investigated. These resonators demonstrated a high sensitivity and thus have a great potential as gravimetric sensors for biomedical applications. © 2011 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.
