Photoluminescence experiments have identified strain as the origin for polarization pinning in vertical cavity surface emitting lasers post-processed by focused ion beam etching. Theoretical models were applied to deduce the strain in devices. Post-annealing was used to optimize polarization pinning.

In this study, a collimating lens is introduced at the output facet of a tapered waveguide laser to compensate for the divergence of the optical mode. The collimating lens is shown to enhance the laser efficiency while simultaneously reducing the far field divergence.

Non-conventional methods of machining are used for many engineering applications where the traditional processes fail to be cost-effective. Such processes include Ion Beam Machining (IBM), focused ion beam (FIB) machining and plasma discharge machining. The mechanisms of material removal and associated hardware and software developed for industrial applications of these fascinating electro-physical and chemical machining processes are reviewed together with the latest research findings. © 2009 CIRP.

LIMA (Laser-induced Ion Mass Analysis) is a new technique capable of compositional analysis of thin films and surface regions. Under UHV conditions a focused laser beam evaporates and ionizes a microvolume of specimen material from which a mass spectrum is obtained. LIMA has been used to examine a range of thin film materials with applications in electronic devices. The neutral photon probe avoids charging problems, and low conductivity materials are examined without prior metallization. Analyses of insulating silicon oxides, nitrides, and oxynitrides confirm estimates of composition from infrared measurements. However, the hydrogen content of hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si : H) found by LIMA shows no correlation with values given by infrared absorption analysis. Explanations are proposed and discussed. © 1985.

The Ni silicide formed at low temperature on Si nanowire has been analyzed by atom probe tomography (APT) thanks to a special technique for sample preparation. A method of preparation has been developed using the focused ion beam (FIB) for the APT analysis of nanowires (NWs). This method allow for the measurement of the radial distribution when a NW is cut, buried in a protective metal matrix, and finally mounted on the APT support post. This method was used for phosphorous doped Si NWs with or without a silicide shell, and allows obtaining the concentration and distribution of chemical elements in three-dimensions (3D) in the radial direction of the NWs. The distribution of atoms in the NWs has been measured including dopants and Au contamination. These measurements show that δ-Ni2Si phase is formed on Si NW, Au is found as cluster at the Ni/δ-Ni2Si interface and P is segregated at the δ-Ni2Si/ Si NW interface. The results obtained on NWs after silicidation were compared with the silicide on the Si substrate, showing that the same silicide phase δ-Ni2Si formed in both cases (NWs and substrate). © 2013 Elsevier B.V. Characterization of polymer nanocomposites by electron microscopy has been attempted since last decade. Main drives for this effort were analysis of dispersion and alignment of fillers in the matrix. Sample preparation, imaging modes and irradiation conditions became particularly challenging due to the small dimension of the fillers and also to the mechanical and conductive differences between filler and matrix. To date, no standardized dispersion and alignment process or characterization procedures exist in the trade. Review of current state of the art on characterization of polymer nanocomposites suggests that the most innovative electron and ion beam microscopy has not yet been deployed in this material system. Additionally, recently discovered functionalities of these composites, such as electro and photoactuation are amenable to the investigation of the atomistic phenomena by in situ transmission electron microscopy. The possibility of using innovative thinning techniques is presented. © 2010 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering.

Single-mode emission is achieved in previously multimode gain-guided vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSEL's) by localized modification of the mirror reflectivity using focused ion-beam etching. Reflectivity engineering is also demonstrated to suppress transverse mode emission in an oxide-confined device, reducing the spectral width from 1.2 nm to less than 0.5 nm.

We investigate the formation of microstructured polymer networks known as Breath Figure templated structures created by the presence of water vapour over evaporating polymer solutions. We use a highly controlled experimental approach to examine this dynamic and non-equilibrium process to uniquely compare pure solvent systems with polymer solutions and demonstrate using a combination of optical microscopy, focused ion-beam milling and SEM analysis that the porous polymer microstructure is completely controlled by the interfacial forces that exist between the water droplet and the solvent until a final drying dilation of the imprints. Water droplet contact angles are the same in the presence or absence of polymer and are independent of size for droplets above 5 μm. The polymer acts a spectator that serves to trap water droplets present at the air interface, and to transfer their shape into the polymer film. For the smallest pores, however, there are unexpected variations in the contact angle with pore size that are consistent with a possible contribution from line tension at these smaller dimensions. © The Royal Society of Chemistry.
