For many applications, it is necessary to produce speech transcriptions in a causal fashion. To produce high quality transcripts, speaker adaptation is often used. This requires online speaker clustering and incremental adaptation techniques to be developed. This paper presents an integrated approach to online speaker clustering and adaptation which allows efficient clustering of speakers using the same accumulated statistics that are normally used for adaptation. Using a consistent criterion for both clustering and adaptation should yield gains for both stages. The proposed approach is evaluated on a meetings transcription task using audio from multiple distant microphones. Consistent gains over standard clustering and adaptation were obtained. We report a novel utilization of periodic arrays of carbon nanotubes in the realization of diffractive photonic crystal lenses. Carbon nanotube arrays with nanoscale dimensions (lattice constant 400 nm and tube radius 50 nm) displayed a negative refractive index in the optical regime where the wavelength is of the order of array spacing. A detailed computational analysis of band gaps and optical transmission through the nanotubes based planar, convex and concave shaped lenses was performed. Due to the negative-index these lenses behaved in an opposite fashion compared to their conventional counter parts. A plano-concave lens was established and numerically tested, displaying ultra-small focal length of 1.5 μm (∼2.3 λ) and a near diffraction-limited spot size of 400 nm (∼0.61 λ). © 2012 Elsevier B.V. Essential design criteria for successful drying of granular particles in a conical continuous centrifugal filter are developed in a dimensionless fashion. Four criteria are considered: minimum flow thickness (to ensure sliding bulk flow rather than particulate flow), desaturation position, output dryness and basket failure. The criteria are based on idealised physical models of the machine operation and are written explicitly as functions of the basket size lout, spin velocity Ω and input flow rate of powder Qp. The separation of sucrose crystals from liquid molasses is taken as a case study and the successful regime of potential operating points (lout, Ω) is plotted for a wide range of selected values of flow rate Qp. Analytical expressions are given for minimum and maximum values of the three independent parameters (lout, Ω, Qp) as a function of the slurry and basket properties. The viable operating regime for a conical centrifugal filter is thereby obtained as a function of the slurry and basket properties. © 2012 The Institution of Chemical Engineers.

Electron and hole conducting 10-nm-wide polymer morphologies hold great promise for organic electro-optical devices such as solar cells and light emitting diodes. The self-assembly of block-copolymers (BCPs) is often viewed as an efficient way to generate such materials. Here, a functional block copolymer that contains perylene bismide (PBI) side chains which can crystallize via π-π stacking to form an electron conducting microphase is patterned harnessing hierarchical electrohydrodynamic lithography (HEHL). HEHL film destabilization creates a hierarchical structure with three distinct length scales: (1) micrometer-sized polymer pillars, containing (2) a 10-nm BCP microphase morphology that is aligned perpendicular to the substrate surface and (3) on a molecular length scale (0.35-3 nm) PBI π-π-stacks traverse the HEHL-generated plugs in a continuous fashion. The good control over BCP and PBI alignment inside the generated vertical microstructures gives rise to liquid-crystal-like optical dichroism of the HEHL patterned films, and improves the electron conductivity across the film by 3 orders of magnitude. © 2013 American Chemical Society.

It is well-known that carbon nanotube (CNT) growth from a dense arrangement of catalyst nanoparticles creates a vertically aligned CNT forest. CNT forests offer attractive anisotropic mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties, and their anisotropic structure is enabled by the self-organization of a large number of CNTs. This process is governed by individual CNT diameter, spacing, and the CNT-to-CNT interaction. However, little information is known about the self-organization of CNTs within a forest. Insight into the self-organization is, however, essential for tailoring the properties of the CNT forests for applications such as electrical interconnects, thermal interfaces, dry adhesives and energy storage. We demonstrate that arrays of CNT micropillars having micron-scale diameters organize in a similar manner as individual CNTs within a forest. For example, as previously demonstrated for individual CNTs within a forest, entanglement of small-diameter CNT micropillars during the initial stage of growth creates a film of entwined pillars. This layer enables coordinated subsequent growth of the pillars in the vertical direction, in a case where isolated pillars would not grow in a self-supporting fashion. Finally, we provide a detailed overview of the self-organization as a function of the diameter, length and spacing of the CNT pillars. This study, which is applicable to many one-dimensional nanostructured films, demonstrates guidelines for tailoring the self-organization which can enable control of the collective mechanical, electrical and interfacial properties of the films. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. The purpose of this thesis is to give answer to the question: why do riblets stop working for a certain size? Riblets are small surface grooves aligned in the mean direction of an overlying turbulent flow, designed specifically to reduce the friction between the flow and the surface. They were inspired by biological surfaces, like the oriented denticles in the skin of fastswimming sharks, and were the focus of a significant amount of research in the late eighties and nineties. Although it was found that the drag reduction depends on the riblet size scaled in wall units, the physical mechanisms implicated have not been completely understood up to now. It has been explained how riblets of vanishing size interact with the turbulent flow, producing a change in the drag proportional to their size, but that is not the regime of practical interest. The optimum performance is achieved for larger sizes, once that linear behavior has broken down, but before riblets begin adopting the character of regular roughness and increasing drag. This regime, which is the most relevant from a technological perspective, was precisely the less understood, so we have focused on it. Our efforts have followed three basic directions. First, we have re-assessed the available experimental data, seeking to identify common characteristics in the optimum regime across the different existing riblet geometries. This study has led to the proposal of a new length scale, the square root of the groove crosssection, to substitute the traditional peak-to-peak spacing. Scaling the riblet dimension with this length, the size of breakdown of the linear behavior becomes roughly universal. This suggests that the onset of the breakdown is related to a certain, fixed value of the cross-section of the groove. Second, we have conducted a set of direct numerical simulations of the turbulent flow over riblets, for sizes spanning the full drag reduction range. We have thus been able to reproduce the gradual transition between the different regimes. The spectral analysis of the flows has proven particularly fruitful, since it has made possible to identify spanwise rollers immediately above the riblets, which begin to appear when the riblet size is close to the optimum. This is a quite surprising feature of the flow, not because of the uniqueness of the phenomenon, which had been reported before for other types of complex and porous surfaces, but because most previous studies had focused on the detail of the flow above each riblet as a unit. Our novel approach has provided the adequate tools to capture coherent structures with an extended spanwise support, which interact with the riblets not individually, but collectively. We have also proven that those spanwise structures are responsible for the increase in drag past the viscous breakdown. Finally, we have analyzed the stability of the flow with a simplified model that connects the appearance of rollers to a Kelvin–Helmholtz-like instability, as is the case also for the flow over plant canopies and porous surfaces. In spite of the model emulating the presence of riblets only in an averaged, general fashion, it succeeds to capture the essential attributes of the breakdown, and provides a theoretical justification for the scaling with the groove cross-section.

This paper is about detecting bipedal motion in video sequences by using point trajectories in a framework of classification. Given a number of point trajectories, we find a subset of points which are arising from feet in bipedal motion by analysing their spatio-temporal correlation in a pairwise fashion. To this end, we introduce probabilistic trajectories as our new features which associate each point over a sufficiently long time period in the presence of noise. They are extracted from directed acyclic graphs whose edges represent temporal point correspondences and are weighted with their matching probability in terms of appearance and location. The benefit of the new representation is that it practically tolerates inherent ambiguity for example due to occlusions. We then learn the correlation between the motion of two feet using the probabilistic trajectories in a decision forest classifier. The effectiveness of the algorithm is demonstrated in experiments on image sequences captured with a static camera, and extensions to deal with a moving camera are discussed. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. We demonstrate how the Gaussian process regression approach can be used to efficiently reconstruct free energy surfaces from umbrella sampling simulations. By making a prior assumption of smoothness and taking account of the sampling noise in a consistent fashion, we achieve a significant improvement in accuracy over the state of the art in two or more dimensions or, equivalently, a significant cost reduction to obtain the free energy surface within a prescribed tolerance in both regimes of spatially sparse data and short sampling trajectories. Stemming from its Bayesian interpretation the method provides meaningful error bars without significant additional computation. A software implementation is made available on www.libatoms.org.

We describe studies of new nanostructured materials consisting of carbon nanotubes wrapped in sequential coatings of two different semiconducting polymers, namely, poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and poly(9,9'-dioctylfluorene-co-benzothiadiazole) (F8BT). Using absorption spectroscopy and steady-state and ultrafast photoluminescence measurements, we demonstrate the role of the different layer structures in controlling energy levels and charge transfer in both solution and film samples. By varying the simple solution processing steps, we can control the ordering and proportions of the wrapping polymers in the solid state. The resulting novel coaxial structures open up a variety of new applications for nanotube blends and are particularly promising for implementation into organic photovoltaic devices. The carbon nanotube template can also be used to optimize both the electronic properties and morphology of polymer composites in a much more controlled fashion than achieved previously, offering a route to producing a new generation of polymer nanostructures.
