High brightness trans-reflective bi-stable displays based on smectic A (SmA) liquid crystals (LCs) can have nearly perfect transparency in the clear state and very high reflection in the scattered state. Because the LC material in use is stable under UV radiation, this kind of displays can stand for strong day-light and therefore be ideal for outdoor applications from e-books to public signage and advertisement. However, the colour application has been limited because the traditional colourants in use are conventional dyes which are lack of UV stability and that their colours are easily photo bleached. Here we present a colour SmA display demonstrator using pigments as colourant. Mixing pigments with SmA LCs and maintain the desirable optical switching performance is not straightforward. We show here how it can be done, including how to obtain fine sized pigment nano-particles, the effects of particle size and size distribution on the display performance. Our optimized pigments/SmA compositions can be driven by a low frequency waveform (∼101Hz) to a scattered state to exhibit colour while by a high frequency waveform (∼103Hz) to a cleared state showing no colour. Finally, we will present its excellent UV life-time (at least >7.2 years) in comparison with that of dye composition (∼2.4 years). The complex interaction of pigment nano-particles with LC molecules and the resulting effects on the LC electro-optical performances are still to be fully understood. We hope this work will not only demonstrate a new and practical approach for outdoor reflective colour displays but also provide a new material system for fundamental liquid crystal colloid research work. © 2012 SPIE.

The ballistic performance of equi-mass plates made from (i) stainless steel (SS); (ii) carbon fibre/epoxy (CF) laminate and (iii) a hybrid plate of both materials has been characterised for a spherical steel projectile. The hybrid plate was orientated with steel on the impact face (SSCF) and on the distal face (CFSS). The penetration velocity (V 50) was highest for the SS plate and lowest for the CF plate. A series of double impact tests were performed, with an initial velocity V I and a subsequent velocity V II at the same impact site. An interaction diagram in (V I,V II) space was constructed to delineate penetration from survival under both impacts. The degree of interaction between the two impact events was greater for the CFSS plate than for the SSCF plate, implying that the distal face has the major effect upon the degree of interaction.

In this communication, we report on the anisotropy of the superconducting properties of multifilamentary Bi-based tapes experimentally investigated by AC magnetic susceptibility measurements. The susceptibility $\chi= \chi' - j \chi''$ was measured using a commercial system and a couple of orthogonal pick-up coils. The $\chi''$ vs. temperature curves were shown to exhibit two peaks. The smaller of the peaks, occurring near T = 72K, was only visible for particular field directions and within a given frequency window. Such results point out the role played by the phase difference between the applied magnetic field and the internal magnetic field seen by the filaments.

Several experimental techniques have been used in order to characterize the properties of multifilamentary Bi-2223 / Ag tapes. Pristine samples were investigated by electrical resistivity, current-voltage characteristics and DC magnetic moment measurements. Much emphasis is placed on comparing transport (direct) and magnetic (indirect) methods for determining the critical current density as well as the irreversibility line and resolving usual lacks of consistency due to the difference in measurement techniques and data analysis. The effect of an applied magnetic field, with various strengths and directions, is also studied and discussed. Next, the same combination of experiments was performed on bent tapes in order to bring out relevant information regarding the intergranular coupling. A modified Brandt model taking into account different types of defects within the superconducting filaments is proposed to reconciliate magnetic and transport data.

We show that tubes of melt cast Bi-2212 used as current leads for LTS magnets can also act as efficient magnetic shields. The magnetic screening properties under an axial DC magnetic field are characterized at several temperatures below the liquid nitrogen temperature (77 K). Two main shielding properties are studied and compared with those of Bi-2223, a material that has been considered in the past for bulk magnetic shields. The first property is related to the maximum magnetic flux density that can be screened, Blim; it is defined as the applied magnetic flux density below which the field attenuation measured at the centre of the shield exceeds 1000. For a cylinder of Bi-2212 with a wall thickness of 5 mm and a large ratio of length over radius, Blim is evaluated to 1 T at T = 10 K. This value largely exceeds the Blim value measured at the same temperature on similar tubes of Bi-2223. The second shielding property that is characterized is the dependence of Blim with respect to variations of the sweep rate of the applied field, dBapp/dt. This dependence is interpreted in terms of the power law E = Ec(J/Jc)^n and allows us to determine the exponent n of this E(J) characteristics for Bi-2212. The characterization of the magnetic field relaxation involves very small values of the electric field. This gives us the opportunity to experimentally determine the E(J) law in an unexplored region of small electric fields. Combining these results with transport and AC shielding measurements, we construct a piecewise E(J) law that spans over 8 orders of magnitude of the electric field.

The magneto-transport properties of Bi1.5Pb0.4Nb0.1Sr2Ca2Cu 3O10-x polycrystalline, superconducting ceramic are reported. The material was found to be chemically homogeneous and partially textured. The mixed state properties were investigated by measuring the electrical resistivity, longitudinal and transverse (Nernst effect) thermoelectric power, and thermal conductivity. The magnetization and AC susceptibility measurements were also performed. The variation of these characteristics for magnetic fields up to 5 T are discussed and compared to those of the zero field case. The transport entropy and thermal Hall angle are extracted and quantitatively compared to previously reported data of closely related systems. © 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

This communication aims at reporting the superconducting properties of Bi-2223/Ag tapes determined by using various measuring techniques. First, the original samples have been characterized by electrical resistance, AC susceptibility, and DC magnetization. The transport (intergranular) critical current vs. magnetic field was also determined at T = 77 K using pulsed currents up to 40 A. Next, the same combination of experiments was performed on bent tapes in order to bring out relevant information concerning the strength of the intergranular coupling. The results show that intergranular and intragranular currents differ by at least one order of magnitude. Finally, additional magnetic measurements were carried out in order to determine the anisotropy ratio Jc ab/Jc c, which was found to lie around 30. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Biomimetic micro-swimmers can be used for various medical applications, such as targeted drug delivery and micro-object (e.g. biological cells) manipulation, in lab-on-a-chip devices. Bacteria swim using a bundle of flagella (flexible hair-like structures) that form a rotating cork-screw of chiral shape. To mimic bacterial swimming, we employ a computational approach to design a bacterial (chirality-induced) swimmer whose chiral shape and rotational velocity can be controlled by an external magnetic field. In our model, we numerically solve the coupled governing equations that describe the system dynamics (i.e. solid mechanics, fluid dynamics and magnetostatics). We explore the swimming response as a function of the characteristic dimensionless parameters and put special emphasis on controlling the swimming direction. Our results provide fundamental physical insight on the chirality-induced propulsion, and it provides guidelines for the design of magnetic bi-directional micro-swimmers. © 2013 The Author(s) Published by the Royal Society. Despite many recent advances, the wide-spread adoption of vibrational energy harvesting has been limited by the low levels of generated output power and confined operational frequency band. Recent work by the authors on parametrically excited harvesters has demonstrated over an order of magnitude power improvement. This paper presents an investigation into the simultaneous employment of both direct and parametric resonance, as well as the incorporation of bi-stability, in an attempt to further improve the mechanical-to-electrical energy conversion efficiency by broadening the output power spectrum. Multiple direct and parametric resonant peaks from a multi-degree-of-freedom system were observed and an accumulative ∼10 Hz half-power bandwidth was recorded for the first 40 Hz. Real vibration data was also employed to analysis the rms power response effectiveness of the proposed system. © 2013 IEEE.

This study investigates the effect of thermal cycles on the fracture properties of the cement-based bi-materials. Sixty eight cubes were exposed to a varied number of 24-hour thermal cycles ranging from 0 to 90 and subsequently were tested in a wedge splitting configuration. The mechanical and fracture properties of normal strength and high strength concretes are substantially improved after 30 thermal cycles, but less so after 90 thermal cycles both in isolation and when bonded to an ultra high-performance fibre-reinforced cement-based composite. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd. In this work specific film structures of Li-Nb-O/Li/Li-Nb-O are investigated by AC Impedance Spectroscopy measurements at different temperatures. This gives the opportunity to investigate properties of the material itself and, at the same time, to consider the influence of the grain boundaries on the ionic behavior of the polycrystalline Lithium Niobate. On the other hand, LiNbO3/Li/Cu multi-layers are studied as electrolyte/anode bi-layers and potential parts of "Li-free" microbatteries. The Li deficiency in the as deposited Li-Nb-O films is cured by forming a "sandwich" of Li-Nb-O/Li/Li-Nb-O, which after annealing becomes ionic conductor. The electrical behavior of an annealed film depends on two sources. The first is due to properties of the material itself and the second is based on the network of the grain boundaries. The average size of the grains is strongly influenced by the structure of the ohmic-contact/substrate. The electrical behavior of the electrolyte/anode interface of the "Li-free" structure LiNbO3/Li/Cu/Au is very similar to the impedance measurements of the single LiNbO3 single films. The whole multilayer structure, though, presents a third relaxation time which is consistent of a small resistance. This resistance is independent of temperature and it seems that is due to the metallic interface Li/Cu/Au. © 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
