A model of lubricated cold strip rolling (1, 2) is extended to the thin foil regime. The model considers the evolution of asperity geometry and lubricant pressure through the bite, treating the strip using a conventional slab model. The elastic deflections of the rolls are coupled into the problem using an elastic finite element model. Friction between the roll and the asperities on the strip is modelled using the Coulomb and Tresca friction factor approaches. The shear stress in the Coulomb friction model is limited to the shear yield stress of the strip. A novel modification to these standard friction laws is used to mimic slipping friction in the reduction regions and sticking friction in a central neutral zone. The model is able to reproduce the sticking and slipping zones predicted by Fleck et al. (3). The variation of rolling load, lubricant film thickness and asperity contact area with rolling speed is examined, for conditions typical of rolling aluminium foil from a thickness of 50 to 25 μm. T he contact area and hence friction rises as the speed drops, leading to a large increase in rolling load. This increase is considerably more marked using Coulomb friction as compared with the friction factor approach. Forward slip increases markedly as the speed falls and a significant sticking region develops.

In this study an inductor-less piezoelectric transformer (PT) based ballast for a 5 W CFL has been designed and simulated. The predictions of circuit currents and losses closely match experimentally measured values. The total simulated loss figure was confirmed against practically determined losses using a precision mini-calorimeter. Using simulation to disaggregate the total loss figure, it is seen that the PT makes the largest contribution to the total losses in such ballast.

The capability of manufacturing coatings is of central importance in engineering design. Many components require nowadays the application of additional layers, to enhance mechanical properties and protect against hostile environments. Supersonic Laser Deposition (SLD) is a novel coating method, based upon Cold Spray (CS) principles. In this technique the deposition velocities can be significantly lower than those required for effective bonding in CS applications. The addition of laser heat energy permits a change in the thermodynamic experience of impacting particles, thereby offering a greater opportunity for metallurgical bonding at lower velocities compared to the CS process technology. The work reported in this paper demonstrates the ability of the SLD process to deliver hard facing materials to engineering surfaces. Stellite-6 has been deposited on low carbon steel tubes over a range of process parameters, determining the appropriate target power and traverse speeds for coating deposition. Coating properties and parameters were examined to determine the main properties, micro-structure and processing cost. Their morphology was studied through optical microscopy, SEM and X-Ray Diffraction. The results have shown that SLD is capable of depositing Stellite-6, with enhanced properties compared to laser clad counterparts.

The compressive behaviour of finite unidirectional composites with a region of misaligned reinforcement is investigated via finite element analyses. Models with and without fibre bending stiffness are compared, confirming that compressive strength is accurately predicted without modelling fibre bending stiffness for real composite components which typically have waviness defects of several millimetres wavelength. Various defect parameters are investigated. Results confirm the well-known sensitivity of compressive strength to misalignment angle, and also show that compressive strength falls rapidly with the proportion of laminate width covered by the wavy region. A simple empirical equation is proposed to model the effect of a single patch of waviness in finite specimens. Other parameters such as length and position of the wavy region are found to have a smaller effect on compressive strength. The modelling approach is finally adapted to model distributed waviness and thus determine the compressive strength of composites with realistic waviness defects. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd. Numerous experimental studies have established that cells can sense the stiffness of underlying substrates and have quantified the effect of substrate stiffness on stress fibre formation, focal adhesion area, cell traction, and cell shape. In order to capture such behaviour, the current study couples a mixed mode thermodynamic and mechanical framework that predicts focal adhesion formation and growth with a material model that predicts stress fibre formation, contractility, and dissociation in a fully 3D implementation. Simulations reveal that SF contractility plays a critical role in the substrate-dependent response of cells. Compliant substrates do not provide sufficient tension for stress fibre persistence, causing dissociation of stress fibres and lower focal adhesion formation. In contrast, cells on stiffer substrates are predicted to contain large amounts of dominant stress fibres. Different levels of cellular contractility representative of different cell phenotypes are found to alter the range of substrate stiffness that cause the most significant changes in stress fibre and focal adhesion formation. Furthermore, stress fibre and focal adhesion formation evolve as a cell spreads on a substrate and leading to the formation of bands of fibres leading from the cell periphery over the nucleus. Inhibiting the formation of FAs during cell spreading is found to limit stress fibre formation. The predictions of this mutually dependent material-interface framework are strongly supported by experimental observations of cells adhered to elastic substrates and offer insight into the inter-dependent biomechanical processes regulating stress fibre and focal adhesion formation. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
