The technique of Subcarrier Modulation is assessed by statistical analysis as a viable solution to broadband data transmission over dispersion limited multimode fibre. It is shown that a suitable passband region for transmission of 2.5 Gb/s channels exists at 5 GHz in greater than 80% of worst-case fibres under standard SMF/MMF launch conditions. ©2002 Optical Society of America.

A vast body of experimental data has been accumulated on the constant amplitude crack growth response of structural metals in moist laboratory air. Usually the data is presented as plots of crack growth rate, da/dN, against stress intensity range, DELTA K. In order to extrapolate this data to fatigue crack growth in more active or more inert environments, to crack growth under variable amplitude loading, or to crack growth under multi-axial or mixed mode loading, the mechanisms of crack advance and crack closure should be considered. This paper briefly reviews the crack closure phenomenon and discusses the dominant causes of accelerated and retarded growth under changes in environment or type of loading. It is argued that simple constant amplitude data is often surprisingly accurate when used to predict crack growth in more complex situations. However, there are some cases where constant amplitude data lead to dangerously non-conservative predictions of fatigue life.

The authors describe a toolbox for the frequency-domain analysis and design of multivariable feedback systems, to be used with PC-Matlab, or Pro-Matlab. The principal model representations used by the toolbox are described. Its capabilities are illustrated by a worked design example, which shows the use of a Nyquist array method. Other design techniques supported by the toolbox are briefly reviewed.

Tetrahedrally bonded amorphous carbon (ta-C) and nitrogen doped (ta-C:N) films were obtained at room temperature in a filtered cathodic vacuum arc (FCVA) system incorporating an off-plane double bend (S-bend) magnetic filter. The influence of the negative bias voltage applied to substrates (from -20 to -350 V) and the nitrogen background pressure (up to 10-3 Torr) on film properties was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS) and X-ray reflectivity (XRR). The ta-C films showed sp3 fractions between 84% and 88%, and mass densities around 3.2 g/cm3 in the wide range of bias voltage studied. In contrast, the compressive stress showed a maximum value of 11 GPa for bias voltages around -90 V, whereas for lower and higher bias voltages the stress decreased to 6 GPa. As for the ta-C:N films grown at bias voltages below -200 V and with N contents up to 7%, it has been found that the N atoms were preferentially sp3 bonded to the carbon network with a reduction in stress below 8 GPa. Further increase in bias voltage or N content increased the sp2 fraction, leading to a reduction in film density to 2.7 g/cm3.

Bone as most of living tissues is able, during its entire lifetime, to adapt its internal microstructure and subsequently its associated mechanical properties to the specific mechanical and physiological environment in a process commonly known as bone remodelling. Bone is therefore continuously renewed and microdamage removed minimizing the risk of fracture. Bone remodelling is controlled by mechanical and metabolical stimuli. In this paper, we introduce a new model of bone remodelling that takes into account both types of influences. The predicted results show a good correspondence with experimental and clinical data. For example, in disuse, bone porosity increases until an equilibrium situation, while, in overloading, decreases unless the damage rate is so high that causes resorption and "stress fracture". This model has been employed to predict bone adaptation in the proximal femur after total hip replacement proving its consistence and good correspondence with well-known clinical experiences.

Modern high performance motorcycles often employ a steering damper producing a moment that opposes the angular velocity of the steering assembly relative to the main frame. When modeling the motorcycle in a conventional manner, the steering damper is included as an integral part of the machine. The reduction in the wobble-mode frequency is caused by the effective increase in the steering system's moment of inertia. The compensators show the potential to significantly improve the damping of both wobble and weave modes simultaneously. The dynamic characteristics of high-performance motorcycles can be improved by replacing the conventional steering damper with a passive mechanical steering compensator. The design methodology adopted uses Nyquist frequency response ideas, root-locus analysis and loop-shaping design to obtain a preliminary choice of parameters.

The Interdisciplinary Design for the Built Environment (IDBE) Masters program offers practicing professionals a structured process of interdisciplinary education and professional development. The course aims to equip all its students with the skills needed to meet these challenges. Most of those taking the course have demonstrated their abilities in their core disciplines and are moving to strategic and leadership roles for which they may well be under-prepared. The objectives of the course include giving students a strategic overview of the construction industry and of the production and management of built environment, as well as a critical perspective on the everyday knowledge and assumptions made in practice. The course also raises awareness of current research in the sector and its potential and limitations, and provides an introduction to professional ethics and the responsibilities owed by engineers and their colleagues to society as a whole.

Electron tunnelling through semiconductor tunnel barriers is exponentially sensitive to the thickness of the barrier layer, and in the most common system, the AlAs tunnel barrier in GaAs, a one monolayer variation in thickness results in a 300% variation in the tunnelling current for a fixed bias voltage. We use this degree of sensitivity to demonstrate that the level of control at 0.06 monolayer can be achieved in the growth by molecular beam epitaxy, and the geometrical variation of layer thickness across a wafer at the 0.01 monolayer level can be detected.

We report on electrical transport measurements at high current densities on optimally doped YBa 2Cu 3O 7-δ thin films grown on vicinal SrTiO 3 substrates. Data were collected by using a pulsed-current technique in a four-probe arrangement, allowing to extend the current-voltage characteristics to high supercritical current densities (up to 24 MA cm -2) and high electric fields (more than 20 V/cm), in the superconducting state at temperatures between 30 and 80 K. The electric measurements were performed on tracks perpendicular to the vicinal step direction, such that the current crossed between ab planes, under magnetic field rotated in the plane defined by the crystallographic c axis and the current density. At magnetic field orientation parallel to the cuprate layers, evidence for the sliding motion along the ab planes (vortex channeling) was found. The signature of vortex channeling appeared to get enhanced with increasing electric field, due to the peculiar depinning features in the kinked vortex range. They give rise to a current-voltage characteristics steeper than in the more off-plane rectilinear vortex orientations, in the electric field range below approximately 1 V/cm. Roughly above this value, the high vortex channeling velocities (up to 8.6 km/s) could be ascribed to the flux flow, although the signature of ohmic transport appeared to be altered by unavoidable macroscopic self-heating and hot-electron-like effects. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. One of the greatest obstacles facing the nuclear industry is that of sustainability, both in terms of the finite reserves of uranium ore and the production of highly radiotoxic spent fuel which presents proliferation and environmental hazards. Alternative nuclear technologies have been suggested as a means of delivering enhanced sustainability with proposals including fast reactors, the use of thorium fuel and tiered fuel cycles. The debate as to which is the most appropriate technology continues, with each fuel system and reactor type delivering specific advantages and disadvantages which can be difficult to compare fairly. This paper demonstrates a framework of performance metrics which, coupled with a first-order lumped reactor model to determine nuclide population balances, can be used to quantify the aforementioned pros and cons for a range of different fuel and reactor combinations. The framework includes metrics such as fuel efficiency, spent fuel toxicity and proliferation resistance, and relative cycle performance is analysed through parallel coordinate plots, yielding a quantitative comparison of disparate cycles. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd.
