Film bulk acoustic resonators (FBARs) and solidly mounted resonators (SMRs) have the potential to significantly improve upon the sensitivity and minimum detection limit of traditional gravimetric sensors based on quartz crystal microbalances (QCMs) and surface acoustic wave resonators (SAWs). To date, neither FBAR nor SMR devices have been demonstrated to be superior to the other; hence the choice between them depends primarily on the users' ability to design/fabricate membranes and/or Bragg reflectors. In this work, it is shown that identically designed FBAR and SMR devices resonating at the same frequency exhibit different responsivities to mass loadings, Rm, and that the SMRs are less responsive than the FBARs. For the specific device design and resonant frequency (~2 GHz) of the resonators presented here, the FBARs' mass responsivity is ~20% greater than that of the SMRs', and although this value is not universal for all possible device designs, it clearly shows that FBAR devices should be favoured over SMRs in gravimetric sensing applications where the FBARs' fragility is not an issue. Numerical calculations based on Mason's model offer an insight into the physical mechanisms behind the greater FBARs responsivity, and it was shown that the Bragg reflector has an effect on the acoustic load at one of the facets of the piezoelectric films which is in turn responsible for the SMRs' lower responsivity to mass loadings. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

A new scalable Monotonically Integrated Large Eddy Simulation (MILES) method based on the Compact Accurately Boundary-Adjusting high-REsolution Technique (CABARET) has been applied for the simulation of unsteady flow around NACA0012 airfoil at Re = 400,000 and M = 0.058. The flow solution is coupled with the Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings formulation for far-field noise prediction. The computational modeling results are presented for several computational grid resolutions: 8, 16, and 32 million grid cells and compared with the experimental data available.

An accurate description of sound propagation in a duct is important to obtain the sound power radiating from a source in both near and far fields. A technique has been developed and applied to decompose higher-order modes of sound emitted into a duct. Traditional experiments and theory based on two-sensor methods are limited to the plane-wave contribution to the sound field at low frequency. Due to the increase in independent measurements required, a computational method has been developed to simulate sensitivities of real measurements (e.g., noise) and optimize the set-up. An experimental rig has been constructed to decompose the first two modes using six independent measurements from surface, flush-mounted microphones. Experiments were initially performed using a loudspeaker as the source for validation. Subsequently, the sound emitted by a mixed-flow fan has been investigated and compared to measurements made in accordance with the internationally standardized in-duct fan measurement method. This method utilizes large anechoic terminations and a procedure involving averaging over measurements in space and time to account for the contribution from higher-order modes. The new method does not require either of these added complications and gives detail about the underlying modal content of the emitted sound.

Smooth and continuous ZnO films consisting of densely packed ZnO nanorods (NRs), which can be used for electronic device fabrication, were synthesized using a hydro-thermo-chemical solution deposition method. Such devices would have the novelty of high performance, benefiting from the inherited unique properties of the nanomaterials, and can be fabricated on these smooth films using a conventional, low cost planar process. Photoluminescence measurements showed that the NR films have much stronger shallow donor to valence band emissions than those from discrete ZnO NRs, and hence have the potential for the development of ZnO light emission diodes and lasers, etc. The NR films have been used to fabricate large area surface acoustic wave devices by conventional photolithography. These demonstrated two well-defined resonant peaks and their potential for large area device applications. The chemical solution deposition method is simple, reproducible, scalable and economic. These NR films are suitable for large scale production on cost-effective substrates and are promising for various fields such as sensing systems, renewable energy and optoelectronic applications.

We consider the propagation of acoustic waves along a cylindrical duct carrying radially sheared axial mean flow, in which the duct radius is allowed to vary slowly along the axis. In previous work [A.J. Cooper & N. Peake, Journal of Fluid Mechanics 445 (2001) 207-234.] radially sheared axial mean flow with nonzero swirl in a slowly varying duct was considered, but in this paper we set the swirl to zero, thereby allowing simplification of the calculations of both the mean and unsteady flows. In this approach the acoustic wavenumber and corresponding eigenfunction are determined locally, while the wave amplitude is found by solving an evolution equation along the duct. Sample results are presented, including a case in which, perhaps surprisingly, the number of cut-on modes increases as the duct radius decreases. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The present study aims at accounting for swirling mean flow effects on rotor trailing-edge noise. Indeed, the mean flow in between the rotor and the stator of the fan or of a compressor stage is highly swirling. The extension of Ffowcs-Williams & Hawkings' acoustic analogy in a medium at rest with moving surfaces and of Goldstein's acoustic analogy in a circular duct with uniform mean flow to a swirling mean flow in an annular duct is introduced. It is first applied to tonal noise. In most cases, the swirl modifies the pressure distribution downstream of the fan. In several configurations, when the swirl is rather close to a solid body swirl, it is often sufficient to apply a simple Doppler effect correction when predicting the duct modes in uniform mean flow in order to predict accurately the noise radiated with swirl. However, in other realistic configurations, the swirling mean-flow effect cannot be addressed using this simple Doppler effect correction. Second, a rotor trailing-edge noise model accounting for both the effects of the annular duct and the swirling mean flow is developed and applied to a realistic fan rotor with different swirling and sheared mean flows (and as a result different associated blade stagger angles). The benchmark cases are built from the Boeing 18-inch Fan Rig Broadband Noise Test. In all cases the swirling mean flow has an effect. In some cases the a simple Doppler effect may address it, but, in other realistic configurations our acoustic analogy with swirl is needed. © 2012 by the authors. Nanocrystalline ZnO films with strong (0002) texture and fine grains were deposited onto ultra-nanocrystalline diamond (UNCD) layers on silicon using high target utilization sputtering technology. The unique characteristic of this sputtering technique allows room temperature growth of smooth ZnO films with a low roughness and low stress at high growth rates. Surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices were fabricated on ZnO/UNCD structure and exhibited good transmission signals with a low insertion loss and a strong side-lobe suppression for the Rayleigh mode SAW. Based on the optimization of the layered structure of the SAW device, a good performance with a coupling coefficient of 5.2% has been realized, promising for improving the microfluidic efficiency in droplet transportation comparing with that of the ZnO/Si SAW device. An optimized temperature coefficient of frequency of -23.4 ppm°C-1 was obtained for the SAW devices with the 2.72 μm-thick ZnO and 1.1 μm-thick UNCD film. Significant thermal effect due to the acoustic heating has been redcued which is related to the temperature stability of the ZnO/UNCD SAW device. © 2013 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim.

The utilisation of thin film technology to develop film bulk acoustic resonators (FBARs) and solidly mounted resonators (SMRs), offers great potential to outperform the sensitivity and minimum detection limit of gravimetric sensors. Up to now, the choice between FBARs and SMRs depends primarily on the users' ability to design and fabricate Bragg reflectors and/or membranes, because neither of these two types of resonators has been demonstrated to be superior to the other. In the work reported here, it is shown that identically designed FBARs and SMRs resonating at the same frequency exhibit different responsitivities, Rm, to mass loadings, being the FBARs more responsive than the SMRs. For the specific device design and resonant frequency (∼2 GHz) of the resonators presented, FBARs' mass responsitivity is ∼20% greater than that of SMRs, and although this value should not be taken as universal for all possible device designs, it clearly indicates that FBAR devices should be favoured over SMRs in gravimetric sensing applications. © 2012 IEEE.

High frequency Rayleigh and Sezawa modes propagating in the ZnO/GaAs system capable of operating immersed in liquid helium have been engineered. In the case of the Rayleigh mode, the strong attenuation produced by the liquid is counteracted by the strengthening of the mode induced by the ZnO. However, in the case of the Sezawa modes, the attenuation is strongly reduced taking advantage of the depth profile of their acoustic Poynting vectors, that extend deeper into the layered system, reducing the energy radiated into the fluid. Thus, both tailored modes will be suitable for acoustically-driven single-electron and single-photon devices in ZnO-coated GaAs-based systems with the best thermal stability provided by the liquid helium bath. © 2012 IEEE.

Ultra-smooth nanocrystalline diamond (UNCD) films with high-acoustic wave velocity were introduced into ZnO-based surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices to enhance their microfluidic efficiency by reducing the acoustic energy dissipation into the silicon substrate and improving the acoustic properties of the SAW devices. Microfluidic efficiency of the ZnO-based SAW devices with and without UNCD inter layers was investigated and compared. Results showed that the pumping velocities increase with the input power and those of the ZnO/UNCD/Si devices are much larger than those of the ZnO/Si devices at the same power. The jetting efficiency of the droplet was improved by introducing the UNCD interlayer into the ZnO/Si SAW device. Improvement in the microfluidic efficiency is mainly attributed to the diamond layer, which restrains the acoustic wave to propagate in the top layer rather than dissipating into the substrate. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
