Light metal sandwich panel structures with cellular cores have attracted interest for multifunctional applications which exploit their high bend strength and impact energy absorption. This concept has been explored here using a model 6061-T6 aluminum alloy system fabricated by friction stir weld joining extruded sandwich panels with a triangular corrugated core. Micro-hardness and miniature tensile coupon testing revealed that friction stir welding reduced the strength and ductility in the welds and a narrow heat affected zone on either side of the weld by approximately 30%. Square, edge clamped sandwich panels and solid plates of equal mass per unit area were subjected to localized impulsive loading by the impact of explosively accelerated, water saturated, sand shells. The hydrodynamic load and impulse applied by the sand were gradually increased by reducing the stand-off distance between the test charge and panel surfaces. The sandwich panels suffered global bending and stretching, and localized core crushing. As the pressure applied by the sand increased, face sheet fracture by a combination of tensile stretching and shear-off occurred first at the two clamped edges of the panels that were parallel with the corrugation and weld direction. The plane of these fractures always lay within the heat affected zone of the longitudinal welds. For the most intensively loaded panels additional cracks occurred at the other clamped boundaries and in the center of the panel. To investigate the dynamic deformation and fracture processes, a particle-based method has been used to simulate the impulsive loading of the panels. This has been combined with a finite element analysis utilizing a modified Johnson-Cook constitutive relation and a Cockcroft-Latham fracture criterion that accounted for local variation in material properties. The fully coupled simulation approach enabled the relationships between the soil-explosive test charge design, panel geometry, spatially varying material properties and the panel's deformation and dynamic failure responses to be explored. This comprehensive study reveals the existence of a strong instability in the loading that results from changes in sand particle reflection during dynamic evolution of the panel's surface topology. Significant fluid-structure interaction effects are also discovered at the sample sides and corners due to changes of the sand reflection angle by the edge clamping system. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. The nonlinear Kosovic, and mixed Leray and α subgrid scale models are contrasted with linear Smagorinsky and Yoshizawa Large Eddy Simulations for a Re = 4000 plane jet simulation. Comparisons are made with Direct Numerical Simulation data and measurements. Global properties of the jet such as the spreading and centreline velocity decay rates are investigated. The mean-flow and turbulence parameters in the self-similar region are also studied. All models generally give encouraging agreement with the Direct Numerical Simulation data and reliable measurements. Solution differences for the models are relatively minor, none giving clear improvements for all data comparisons.

A heated rotating cavity with an axial throughflow of cooling air is used as a model for the flow in the cylindrical cavities between adjacent discs of a high-pressure gas-turbine compressor. In an engine the flow is expected to be turbulent, the limitations of this laminar study are fully realised but it is considered an essential step to understand the fundamental nature of the flow. The three-dimensional, time-dependent governing equations are solved using a code based on the finite volume technique and a multigrid algorithm. The computed flow structure shows that flow enters the cavity in one or more radial arms and then forms regions of cyclonic and anticyclonic circulation. This basic flow structure is consistent with existing experimental evidence obtained from flow visualization. The flow structure also undergoes cyclic changes with time. For example, a single radial arm, and pair of recirculation regions can commute to two radial arms and two pairs of recirculation regions and then revert back to one. The flow structure inside the cavity is found to be heavily influenced by the radial distribution of surface temperature imposed on the discs. As the radial location of the maximum disc temperature moves radially outward, this appears to increase the number of radial arms and pairs of recirculation regions (from one to three for the distributions considered here). If the peripheral shroud is also heated there appear to be many radial arms which exchange fluid with a strong cyclonic flow adjacent to the shroud. One surface temperature distribution is studied in detail and profiles of the relative tangential and radial velocities are presented. The disc heat transfer is also found to be influenced by the disc surface temperature distribution. It is also found that the computed Nusselt numbers are in reasonable accord over most of the disc surface with a correlation found from previous experimental measurements. © 1994, MCB UP Limited.

The paper discusses measurements of heat transfer obtained from the inside surface of the peripheral shroud. The experiments were carried out on a rotating cavity, comprising two 0.985-m-dia disks, separated by an axial gap of 0.065 m and bounded at the circumference by a carbon fiber shroud. Tests were conducted with a heated shroud and either unheated or heated disks. When heated, the disks had the same temperature level and surface temperature distribution. Two different temperature distributions were tested; the surface temperature either increased, or decreased with radius. The effects of disk, shroud, and air temperature levels were also studied. Tests were carried out for the range of axial throughflow rates and speeds: 0.0025 ≤ m ≤ 0.2 kg/s and 12.5 ≤ Ω ≤ 125 rad/s, respectively. Measurements were also made of the temperature of the air inside the cavity. The shroud Nusselt numbers are found to depend on a Grashof number, which is defined using the centripetal acceleration. Providing the correct reference temperature is used, the measured Nusselt numbers also show similarity to those predicted by an established correlation for a horizontal plate in air. The heat transfer from the shroud is only weakly affected by the disk surface temperature distribution and temperature level. The heat transfer from the shroud appears to be affected by the Rossby number. A significant enhancement to the rotationally induced free convection occurs in the regions 2 ≤ Ro ≤ 4 and Ro ≥ 20. The first of these corresponds to a region where vortex breakdown has been observed. In the second region, the Rossby number may be sufficiently large for the central throughflow to affect the shroud heat transfer directly. Heating the shroud does not appear to affect the heat transfer from the disks significantly.

We report about the magnetoresistive properties of calcium-doped lanthanum manganate thin films grown by RF magnetron sputtering on single crystalline LaAlO3 and MgO substrates. Two orientations of the magnetic field with respect to the electrical current have been studied: (i) magnetic field in the plane of the film and parallel to the electrical current, and (ii) magnetic field perpendicular to the plane of the film. The film grown on LaAlO 3 is characterised by an unusual magnetoresistive behaviour when the magnetic field is applied perpendicular to the film plane: the appearance of two bumps in the field dependence of the resistance is shown to be related to the occurrence of anisotropic magnetoresistive effects in manganate films. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. This paper proposes a design methodology to stabilize relative equilibria in a model of identical, steered particles moving in the plane at unit speed. Relative equilibria either correspond to parallel motion of all particles with fixed relative spacing or to circular motion of all particles around the same circle. Particles exchange relative information according to a communication graph that can be undirected or directed and time-invariant or time-varying. The emphasis of this paper is to show how previous results assuming all-to-all communication can be extended to a general communication framework. © 2008 IEEE.

This paper proposes a design methodology to stabilize isolated relative equilibria in a model of all-to-all coupled identical particles moving in the plane at unit speed. Isolated relative equilibria correspond to either parallel motion of all particles with fixed relative spacing or to circular motion of all particles with fixed relative phases. The stabilizing feedbacks derive from Lyapunov functions that prove exponential stability and suggest almost global convergence properties. The results of the paper provide a low-order parametric family of stabilizable collectives that offer a set of primitives for the design of higher-level tasks at the group level. © 2007 IEEE.

A small-strain two-dimensional discrete dislocation plasticity (DDP) framework is developed wherein dislocation motion is caused by climb-assisted glide. The climb motion of the dislocations is assumed to be governed by a drag-type relation similar to the glide-only motion of dislocations: such a relation is valid when vacancy kinetics is either diffusion limited or sink limited. The DDP framework is employed to predict the effect of dislocation climb on the uniaxial tensile and pure bending response of single crystals. Under uniaxial tensile loading conditions, the ability of dislocations to bypass obstacles by climb results in a reduced dislocation density over a wide range of specimen sizes in the climb-assisted glide case compared to when dislocation motion is only by glide. A consequence is that, at least in a single slip situation, size effects due to dislocation starvation are reduced. By contrast, under pure bending loading conditions, the dislocation density is unaffected by dislocation climb as geometrically necessary dislocations (GNDs) dominate. However, climb enables the dislocations to arrange themselves into lower energy configurations which significantly reduces the predicted bending size effect as well as the amount of reverse plasticity observed during unloading. The results indicate that the intrinsic plasticity material length scale associated with GNDs is strongly affected by thermally activated processes and will be a function of temperature. © 2013 IOP Publishing Ltd.
