FM mode-locking in monolithic semiconductor lasers is investigated for the first time, using a travelling-wave laser model. The effects of phase modulation depth and non-zero alpha factor on pulse quality and pulse-width are discussed. © 2004 Optical Society of America.

Colliding pulse mode-locking is demonstrated for the first time in quantum-dot lasers. Close to transform limited, 7ps, 20GHz pulses are achieved using an absorber length considerably longer than typically used in similar quantum-well lasers. © 2004 Optical Society of America.

The use of tapered waveguide lasers and amplifiers for enhanced picosecond pulse generation has led to order-of-magnitude peak power and pulse energy improvements. Monolithic pulse generation schemes have so far relied on a double-tapered bow-tie structure. The modeling of tapered lasers has so far been limited to steady-state operation or has lacked experimental comparison. This paper considers both experimentally and theoretically the gain-switched performance of bow-tie lasers of various taper angles. The role of transverse-mode spatial hole burning in tapered waveguide lasers is thereby investigated.

A continuous Gaussian profile matched to the fundamental mode was etched onto the aperture of a vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL). Single Gaussian spot emission was achieved over the entire operating current range.

The basic ideas and current state of the art of ultrashort pulse generation by injection lasers are reviewed. All developed techniques, including gain switching, Q-switching, and mode-locking are described and compared. A simple theoretical treatment of a diode laser which emits picosecond light pulses is discussed. Some fundamental limits of the pulse parameters are discussed. Finally, compression of chirped optical pulses by optical fibres and the soliton effect is considered. © 1992 Chapman & Hall.

We experimentally demonstrate locking of a laser frequency to a resonance line of a micro disk resonator. Achieving 1±0.1 pm shifting detection, the approach can be applied for sensing enhancement and perturbation immune NSOM measurements. © 2012 OSA.
