Microfabricated cantilevers have recently attracted considerable attention as novel label-free chemical and biological biosensors which translate surface reactions into nanomechanical bending motion. However these studies have primarily focused on commercially available silicon cantilevers and relatively little work has been performed on cantilevers fabricated from other materials. Polymeric materials, offer significant advantages over silicon by virtue of the low Young's modulus, ease of microfabrication and reduced cost. In this paper, we report a non-vacuum fabrication process to produce arrays of SU8 cantilevers and demonstrate their application as chemical sensors using in situ reference cantilevers. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. The use of microbial induced precipitation as a soil improvement technique has been growing in geotechnical domains where ureolytic bacteria that raise the pH of the system and induce calcium carbonate (CaCO3) precipitation are used. For many applications, it is useful to assess the degree of CaCO 3 precipitation by non-destructive testing. This study investigates the feasibility of S-wave velocity measurements to evaluate the amount of calcite precipitation by laboratory testing. Two sets of cemented specimen were tested. The first were samples terminated at different stages of cementation. The second were samples that went through different chemical treatments. These variations were made to find out if these factors would affect the S-wave velocity- cementation relationship. If chemical reaction efficiency was assumed to be constant throughout each test, the relationship between S-wave velocity (Vs) and the amount of CaCO3 precipitation was found to be approximately linear. This correlation between S-wave velocity and calcium carbonate precipitation validates its use as an indicator of the amount of calcite precipitation © 2011 ASCE.

Research has begun on Microbial Carbonate Precipitation (MCP), which shows promise as a soil improvement method because of its low carbon dioxide emission compared to cement stabilized agents. MCP produces calcium carbonate from carbonates and calcium in soil voids through ureolysis by "Bacillus Pasteurii". This study focuses on how the amount of calcium carbonate precipitation is affected by the injection conditions of the microorganism and nutrient salt, such as the number of injections and the soil type. Experiments were conducted to simulate soil improvement by bio-grouting soil in a syringe. The results indicate that the amount of precipitation is affected by injection conditions and soil type, suggesting that, in order for soil improvement by MCP to be effective, it is necessary to set injection conditions that are in accordance with the soil conditions. © 2011 ASCE.

A novel type of linear extensometer with exceptionally high resolution of 4 nm based on MEMS resonant strain sensors bonded on steel and operating in a vacuum package is presented. The tool is implemented by means of a steel thin bar that can be pre-stressed in tension within two fixing anchors. The extension of the bar is detected by using two vacuum-packaged resonant MEMS double- ended tuning fork (DETF) sensors bonded on the bar with epoxy glue, one of which is utilized for temperature compensation. Both sensors are driven by a closed loop self-oscillating transresistance amplifier feedback scheme implemented on a PCB (Printed Circuit Board). On the same board, a microcontroller-based frequency measurement circuit is also implemented, which is able to count the square wave fronts of the MEMS oscillator output with a resolution of 20 nsec. The system provides a frequency noise of 0.2 Hz corresponding to an extension resolution of 4 nm for the extensometer. Nearly perfect temperature compensation of the frequency output is achieved in the temperature range 20-35 C using the reference sensor. © 2011 IEEE.

This paper reports on a switchable multi-band filter response achieved within a single micro-electro-mechanical device. A prototype device fabricated in a SOI process demonstrates a voltage programmable and tunable, dual-band, band-pass/band-stop response. Both analytical and finite element models are introduced in this paper to elucidate the operating principle of the filter and to guide filter design. Voltage programmability of the filter characteristic is demonstrated with the ability to independently tune the centre frequency and bandwidth for each band. A representative measurement shows that the minimum 3 dB-bandwidth (BW) is 155 Hz, 140Hz, and 20 dB-BW is 216 Hz, 203Hz for the upper-band and lower-band center frequencies located at 131.5 kHz and 130.7 kHz, respectively. © 2011 IEEE.
