Chemical vapor deposition on copper is the most widely used method to synthesize graphene at large scale. However, the clear understanding of the fundamental mechanisms that govern this synthesis is lacking. Using a vertical-flow, cold-wall reactor with short gas residence time we observe the early growths to study the kinetics of chemical vapor deposition of graphene on copper foils and demonstrate uniform synthesis at wafer scale. Our results indicate that the growth is limited by the catalytic dissociative dehydrogenation on the surface and copper sublimation hinders the graphene growth. We report an activation energy of 3.1 eV for ethylene-based graphene synthesis. © The Electrochemical Society.

All-chemical vapor deposited silicon nitride / monolayer graphene TFTs have been fabricated. Polychromatic Raman spectroscopy shows high quality monolayer graphene channels with uniform coverage and significant interfacial doping at the source-drain contacts. Nominal mobilities of approximately 1900 cm 2V-1s-1 have been measured opening up a potentially useful platform for analogue and RFR-based applications fabricated through allchemical vapor deposition processes. © The Electrochemical Society.

This paper details the use of carbon nanotubes and graphene for key field emission applications. Herein we describe the growth of nanotubes and their optimization for use in electron microscopes, field emission displays and x-ray sources. We also present a novel edge-emitting graphene based structure for large area electron emission displays.

We passively modelock an optically pumped VECSEL by using a single-layer graphene saturable absorber mirror, resulting in pulses as short as 473 fs. A broad wavelength tuning range of 46 nm is achieved with three different VECSEL chips, with a single chip 21 nm are covered. © OSA 2013.

A fundamental study of visible diffraction effects from patterned graphene layers is presented. By patterning graphene into optical gratings, visible diffraction from graphene is experimentally measured as a function of the number of layers and visible wavelengths. A practical application of these effects is also presented, by demonstrating an optical hologram based on graphene. A high resolution (pixel size 400 nm) intensity hologram is fabricated which, in response to incident laser light, generates a visible image. These findings suggest that visible diffraction in graphene can find practical application in holograms and should also be considered during the design and characterisation of graphene-based optical applications. © 2013 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. There is considerable demand for sensors that are capable of detecting ultra-low concentrations (sub-PPM) of toxic gases in air. Of particular interest are NO2 and CO that are exhaust products of internal combustion engines. Electrochemical (EC) sensors are widely used to detect these gases and offer the advantages of low power, good selectivity and temporal stability. However, EC sensors are large (1 cm3), hand-made and thus expensive ($25). Consequently, they are unsuitable for the low-cost automotive market that demands units for less than $10. One alternative technology is SnO2 or WO3 resistive gas sensors that are fabricated in volume today using screen-printed films on alumina substrates and operate at 400°C. Unfortunately, they suffer from several disadvantages: power consumption is high 200 mW; reproducibility of the sensing element is poor; and cross-sensitivity is high. © 2013 IEEE.

Graphene grown by Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) on nickel subsrate is oxidized by means of oxygen plasma and UV/Ozone treatments to introduce bandgap opening in graphene. The degree of band gap opening is proportional to the degree of oxidation on the graphene. This result is analyzed and confirmed by Scanning Tunnelling Microscopy/Spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy measurements. Compared to conventional wet-oxidation methods, oxygen plasma and UV/Ozone treatments do not require harsh chemicals to perform, allow faster oxidation rates, and enable site-specific oxidation. These features make oxygen plasma and UV/Ozone treatments ideal candidates to be implemented in high-throughput fabrication of graphene-based microelectronics. © 2011 Materials Research Society.

Carbon nanostructures have been much sought after for cold-cathode field emission applications. Herein a printing technique is reported to controllably nanostructure chemical vapor deposited graphene into vertically standing fins. The method allows for the creation of regular arrays of bilayer graphene fins, with sharp ridges that, when printed onto gold electrodes, afford a new type of field emission electron source geometry. The approach affords tunable morphologies and excellent long term and cyclic stabilities.

Antenna-coupled field effect transistors have been developed as plasma-wave THz detectors in both InAs nanowire and graphene channel materials. Room temperature operation has been achieved up to 3 THz, with noise equivalent power levels < 10-10 W/Hz1/2, and high-speed response already suitable for large area THz imaging applications. © 2013 IEEE.
