The north-south line in Amsterdam is being built underneath the historic centre of the city. Three deep stations are being constructed in deep excavations supported by diaphragm walls. During the excavation for Vijzelgracht station, leakage through the wall resulted in large settlements and damage to historic buildings, which threatened continuation of the project. The authors analysed the cause of the leakage and the damage to the buildings. With the application of robust preventative measures at two of the deep excavations it was possible to continue the project. This paper reports on the cause of the events, the damage to the buildings and the counter-measures taken. It includes lessons learned for the project and for the foundations industry.

A computational impact analysis methodology has been developed, based on modal analysis and a local contact force-deflection model. The contact law is based on Hertz contact theory while contact stresses are elastic, defines a modified contact theory to take account of local permanent indentation, and considers elastic recovery during unloading. The model was validated experimentally through impact testing of glass-carbon hybrid braided composite panels. Specimens were mounted in a support frame and the contact force was inferred from the deceleration of the impactor, measured by high-speed photography. A Finite Element analysis of the panel and support frame assembly was performed to compute the modal responses. The new contact model performed well in predicting the peak forces and impact durations for moderate energy impacts (15 J), where contact stresses locally exceed the linear elastic limit and damage may be deemed to have occurred. C-scan measurements revealed substantial damage for impact energies in the range of 30-50 J. For this regime the new model predictions might be improved by characterisation of the contact law hysteresis during the unloading phase, and a modification of the elastic vibration response in line with damage levels acquired during the impact. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd. This paper shows that film bulk acoustic resonator (FBAR) arrays can be very useful sensors either to detect physical parameters such as temperature and pressure directly or to detect bio-chemicals with extremely high sensitivities by incorporating a chemisorption layer or bio-probe molecules. Furthermore, it also shows that surface acoustic wave devices can be integrated with a FBAR sensor array on the same piezoelectric substrate as the microfluidics systems to perform transportation and mixing of biosamples etc. demonstrating the possibility to fabricate integrated lab-on-a-chip detection systems, in which all the actuators and sensors are operated by acoustic wave devices. This makes the detection system simple, low cost and easy to operate and hence has great commercial potential. © 2011 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

A voltage sensing buck converter-based technique for maximum solar power delivery to a load is presented. While retaining the features and advantages of the incremental conductance algorithm, this technique is more desirable because of single sensor use. The technique operates by maximising power at the buck converter output instead of the input.

Hybrid glass-carbon 2D braided composites with varying carbon contents are impacted using a gas gun by impactors of masses 12.5 and 44.5. g, at impact energies up to 50. J. The damage area detected by ultrasound C-scan is found to increase roughly linearly with impact energy, and is larger for the lighter impactor at the same impact energy. The area of whitening of the glass tows on the distal side corresponds with the measured C-scan damage area. X-ray imaging shows more intense damage, at the same impact energy, for a higher-mass impactor. Braids with more glass content have a modest increase in density, decrease in modulus, and reduction in the C-scan area and dent depth at the impact site, particularly at the higher impact energies. Impact damage is found to reduce significantly the compressive strength, giving up to a 26% reduction at the maximum impact energy. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.

Thin film bulk acoustic wave resonator (FBAR) devices supporting simultaneously multiple resonance modes have been designed for gravimetric sensing. The mechanism for dual-mode generation within a single device has been discussed, and theoretical calculations based on finite element analysis allowed the fabrication of FBARs whose resonance modes have opposite reactions to temperature changes; one of the modes exhibiting a positive frequency shift for a rise of temperature whilst the other mode exhibits a negative shift. Both modes exhibit negative frequency shift for a mass load and hence by monitoring simultaneously both modes it is possible to distinguish whether a change in the resonance frequency is due to a mass load or temperature variation (or a combination of both), avoiding false positive/negative responses in gravimetric sensing without the need of additional reference devices or complex electronics.
