Detailed investigations are undertaken, for the first time, of the transmission performance of recently proposed novel Adaptively Modulated Optical OFDM (AMOOFDM) modems using Subcarrier Modulation (AMOOFDM-SCM) in single-channel, SMF-based IMDD links without optical amplification and chromatic dispersion compensation. The cross-talk effect induced by beatings among subcarriers of various types is a crucial factor limiting the maximum achievable AMOOFDM-SCM performance. By applying single sideband modulation and/or spectral gapping to AMOOFDM-SCM, three AMOOFDM-SCM designs of varying complexity are proposed, which achieve >60Gb/s signal transmission over 20 km, 40 km and 60 km. Such performances are >1.5 times higher than those supported by conventional AMOOFDM modems.

Orthogonal multipulse modulation is demonstrated to allow ≈30 Gb/s real-time transmission over multimode fibre using an 850 nm VCSEL. The scheme eases considerably component bandwidth requirements compared with conventional NRZ modulation. © 2011 OSA.

The self-organization of the helical structure of chiral nematic liquid crystals combined with their sensitivity to electric fields makes them particularly interesting for low-threshold, wavelength tunable laser devices. We have studied these organic lasers in detail, ranging from the influence specific macroscopic properties, such as birefringence and order parameter, have on the output characteristics, to practical systems in the form of two-dimensional arrays, double-pass geometries and paintable lasers. Furthermore, even though chiral nematics are responsive to electric fields there is no facile means by which the helix periodicity can be adjusted, thereby allowing laser wavelength tuning, without adversely affecting the optical quality of the resonator. Therefore, in addition to studying the liquid crystal lasers, we have focused on finding a novel method with which to alter the periodicity of a chiral nematic using electric fields without inducing defects and degrading the optical quality factor of the resonator. This paper presents an overview of our research, describing (i) the correlation between laser output and material properties,(ii) the importance of the gain medium,(iii) multicolor laser arrays, and (iv) high slope efficiency (>60%) silicon back-plane devices. Overall we conclude that these materials have great potential for use in versatile organic laser systems.

This paper describes a new strategy to make a full solid-state, flexible, dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) based on novel ionic liquid gel, organic dye, ZnO nanoparticles and carbon nanotube (CNT) thin film stamped onto a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate. The CNTs serve both as the charge collector and as scaffolds for the growth of ZnO nanoparticles, where the black dye molecules are anchored. It opens up the possibility of developing a continuous roll to roll processing for THE mass production of DSSCs.

A novel test method for the characterisation of flexible forming processes is proposed and applied to four flexible forming processes: Incremental Sheet Forming (ISF), conventional spinning, the English wheel and power hammer. The proposed method is developed in analogy with time-domain control engineering, where a system is characterised by its impulse response. The spatial impulse response is used to characterise the change in workpiece deformation created by a process, but has also been applied with a strain spectrogram, as a novel way to characterise a process and the physical effect it has on the workpiece. Physical and numerical trials to study the effects of process and material parameters on spatial impulse response lead to three main conclusions. Incremental sheet forming is particularly sensitive to process parameters. The English wheel and power hammer are strongly similar and largely insensitive to both process and material parameters. Spinning develops in two stages and is sensitive to most process parameters, but insensitive to prior deformation. Finally, the proposed method could be applied to modelling, classification of existing and novel processes, product-process matching and closed-loop control of flexible forming processes. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.

Thin-film electronics in its myriad forms has underpinned much of the technological innovation in the fields of displays, sensors, and energy conversion over the past four decades. This technology also forms the basis of flexible electronics. Here we review the current status of flexible electronics and attempt to predict the future promise of these pervading technologies in healthcare, environmental monitoring, displays and human-machine interactivity, energy conversion, management and storage, and communication and wireless networks. © 2012 IEEE.

Aluminum nitride (AlN) piezoelectric thin films with c-axis crystal orientation on polymer substrates can potentially be used for development of flexible electronics and lab-on-chip systems. In this study, we investigated the effects of deposition parameters on the crystal structure of AlN thin films on polymer substrates deposited by reactive direct-current magnetron sputtering. The results show that low sputtering pressure as well as optimized N 2/Ar flow ratio and sputtering power is beneficial for AlN (002) orientation and can produce a highly (002) oriented columnar structure on polymer substrates. High sputtering power and low N 2/Ar flow ratio increase the deposition rate. In addition, the thickness of Al underlayer also has a strong influence on the film crystallography. The optimal deposition parameters in our experiments are: deposition pressure 0.38 Pa, N 2/Ar flow ratio 2:3, sputtering power 414 W, and thickness of Al underlayer less than 100 nm. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. A series of dynamic centrifuge tests on reduced scale models of flexible retaining structures were conducted on the Turner beam centrifuge at the Schofield Centre of the University of Cambridge. The paper illustrates the main results of the experimental work in terms of observed amplifications of ground motion and mobilised shear stiffness and damping ratio for all tests. The experimental results for one test on a pair of cantilevered walls in dense sand are also presented in terms of measured bending moments and horizontal displacements of the walls during (maximum values) and at the end of (residual values) each seismic event. Finally, the experimental data are discussed in the light of the results obtained from dynamic numerical analyses of the behaviour of cantilevered walls under real seismic actions. © 2010 Taylor & Francis Group, London.
