Optical switching functionality is demonstrated in PCB integrated multimode passive polymer waveguides using a localised liquid-crystal cladding structure. Waveguide switching contrast of 15 dB is achieved with only 0.5 dB of on-state excess loss. © 2009 OSA.

We report the first experimental demonstration of a monolithically integrated hybrid dilated 2×2 modular optical switch using Mach-Zehnder modulators as low-loss 1×2 switching elements and short semiconductor optical amplifiers to provide additional extinction and gain. An excellent 40 dB cross-talk/extinction ratio is recorded with data-modulated signal-to-noise ratios of up to 44 dB in a 0.1 nm bandwidth. A switching time of 3 ns is demonstrated. Bit error rate studies show extremely low subsystem penalties of less than 0.1 dB, and studies indicate that, by using this hybrid switch building block, an 8×8 port switch could be achieved with 14 dB input power dynamic range for subsystem penalties of less than 0.5 dB.

A modular dilated MZI based optical switch with integrated SOAs is demonstrated with excellent -40dB crosstalk/extinction ratio, 3ns switching time and nearly penalty-free operation. Studies show an 8×8 switch with 14dB IPDR for 0.5dB penalty. © 2014 OSA.

We report the growth of vertically-aligned nanotube forests, of up to 0.2 mm in height, on an 85:15 sp2:sp3 carbon support with Fe catalyst. This is achieved by purely-thermal chemical vapour deposition with the catalyst pretreated in inert environments. Pretreating the catalyst in a reducing atmosphere causes catalyst diffusion into the support and the growth of defective tubes. Other sp2:sp3 compositions, including graphite, tetrahedral amorphous carbon, and pure diamond, also lead to the growth of defective carbon morphologies. These results pave the way towards controlled growth of forests on carbon fibres. It could give rise to applications in enhanced fuel cell electrodes and better hierarchical carbon fibre-nanotube composites. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A 3x3 SOA-based switch is demonstrated for routing both radio-over-fiber and digital signals simultaneously. High extinction ratio digital baseband signals are transmitted and sufficient linearity is found for high performance RF signal distribution. © 2006 Optical Society of America.
