The impact of a slug of dry sand particles against a metallic sandwich beam or circular sandwich plate is analysed in order to aid the design of sandwich panels for shock mitigation. The sand particles interact via a combined linear-spring-and-dashpot law whereas the face sheets and compressible core of the sandwich beam and plate are treated as rate-sensitive, elastic-plastic solids. The majority of the calculations are performed in two dimensions and entail the transverse impact of end-clamped monolithic and sandwich beams, with plane strain conditions imposed. The sand slug is of rectangular shape and comprises a random loose packing of identical, circular cylindrical particles. These calculations reveal that loading due to the sand is primarily inertial in nature with negligible fluid-structure interaction: the momentum transmitted to the beam is approximately equal to that of the incoming sand slug. For a slug of given incoming momentum, the dynamic deflection of the beam increases with decreasing duration of sand-loading until the impulsive limit is attained. Sandwich beams with thick, strong cores significantly outperform monolithic beams of equal areal mass. This performance enhancement is traced to the "sandwich effect" whereby the sandwich beams have a higher bending strength than that of the monolithic beams. Three-dimensional (3D) calculations are also performed such that the sand slug has the shape of a circular cylindrical column of finite height, and contains spherical sand particles. The 3D slug impacts a circular monolithic plate or sandwich plate and we show that sandwich plates with thick strong cores again outperform monolithic plates of equal areal mass. Finally, we demonstrate that impact by sand particles is equivalent to impact by a crushable foam projectile. The calculations on the equivalent projectile are significantly less intensive computationally, yet give predictions to within 5% of the full discrete particle calculations for the monolithic and sandwich beams and plates. These foam projectile calculations suggest that metallic foam projectiles can be used to simulate the loading by sand particles within a laboratory setting. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.

The creep response of metallic foam sandwich beams in 3-point bend is investigated numerically for the case of a metallic foam core and two steel faces. The face sheets are treated as elastic, while the foam core is modeled by a viscoplastic extension of the Deshpande-Fleck yield surface. This power-law creeping constitutive law has been implemented within the commercial finite element code ABAQUS. It is found that the beams creep by a variety of competing mechanisms, depending upon the choice of material properties and the geometric parameters. A failure map is constructed and effect of rate dependence on the load-deflection curves is quantified, and compared against the available experimental data.

Plastic collapse modes of sandwich beams have been investigated experimentally and theoretically for the case of an aluminum alloy foam with cold-worked aluminum face sheets. Plastic collapse is by three competing mechanisms: face yield, indentation and core shear, with the active mechanism depending upon the choice of geometry and material properties. The collapse loads, as predicted by simple upper bound solutions for a rigid, ideally plastic beam, and by more refined finite element calculations are generally in good agreement with the measured strengths. However, a thickness effect of the foam core on the collapse strength is observed for collapse by core shear: the shear strength of the core increases with diminishing core thickness in relation to the cell size. Limit load solutions are used to construct collapse maps, with the beam geometrical parameters as axes. Upon displaying the collapse load for each collapse mechanism, the regimes of dominance of each mechanism and the associate mass of the beam are determined. The map is then used in optimal design by minimizing the beam weight for a given structural load index.

The magnetisation of bulk high temperature superconductors (HTS), such as RE-Ba-Cu-O [(RE)BCO, where RE is a rare earth element or Y], by a practical technique is essential for their application in high field, permanent magnet-like devices. Research to-date into the pulsed field magnetisation (PFM) of these materials, however, has been limited generally to experimental techniques, with relatively little progress in the development of theoretical models. This is because not only is a multi-physics approach needed to take account of the heating of the samples but also the high electric fields generated are well above the regime in which there are reliable experimental results. This paper describes a framework of theoretical simulation using the finite element method (FEM) that is applicable to both single- and multi-pulse magnetisation processes of (RE)BCO bulk superconductors. The model incorporates the heat equation and provides a convenient way of determining the distribution of trapped field, current density and temperature change within a bulk superconductor at each stage of the magnetisation process. An example of the single-pulse magnetisation of a (RE)BCO bulk is described. Potentially, the model may serve as a cost-effective tool for the optimisation of the bulk geometry and the magnetisation profile in multi-pulse magnetisation processes. © 2010 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Sandwich beams comprising identical face sheets and a square honeycomb core were manufactured from carbon fiber composite sheets. Analytical expressions were derived for four competing collapse mechanisms of simply supported and clamped sandwich beams in three-point bending: core shear, face microbuckling, face wrinkling, and indentation. Selected geometries of sandwich beams were tested to illustrate these collapse modes, with good agreement between analytic predictions and measurements of the failure load. Finite element (FE) simulations of the three-point bending responses of these beams were also conducted by constructing a FE model by laying up unidirectional plies in appropriate orientations. The initiation and growth of damage in the laminates were included in the FE calculations. With this embellishment, the FE model was able to predict the measured load versus displacement response and the failure sequence in each of the composite beams. © 2011 American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

The conventional technology for generating ultrashort pulses relies on soliton-like operation based mode-locking. In this regime, the pulse duration is limited by nonlinear optical effects[1]. One method to mitigate these effects is to alternate segments of normal and anomalous group velocity dispersion (GVD) fiber[1]. This configuration is known as dispersion-managed soliton design. It decreases the nonlinear optical effects and reduces the pulse duration[1]. © 2011 IEEE.

An assessment of the underwater blast resistance of sandwich beams with a prismatic Y-truss core is presented, utilizing three-dimensional finite element calculations. Results show a significant performance benefit for sandwich construction when compared to a monolithic plate of the same mass when the sandwich core combines high shear strength with low compressive strength.

The dynamic response of end-clamped monolithic beams and sandwich beams of equal areal mass have been measured by loading the beams at mid-span with metal foam projectiles to simulate localised blast loading. The sandwich beams were made from carbon fibre laminate and comprised identical face sheets and a square-honeycomb core. The transient deflection of the beams was determined as a function of projectile momentum, and the measured response was compared with finite element simulations based upon a damage mechanics approach. A range of failure modes were observed in the sandwich beams including core fracture, plug-type shear failure of the core, debonding of the face sheets from the core and tensile tearing of the face sheets at the supports. In contrast, the monolithic beams failed by a combination of delamination of the plies and tensile failure at the supports. The finite element simulations of the beam response were accurate provided the carbon fibre properties were endowed with rate sensitivity of damage growth. The relative performance of monolithic and sandwich beams were quantified by the maximum transverse deflection at mid-span for a given projectile momentum. It was found that the sandwich beams outperformed both monolithic composite beams and steel sandwich beams with a square-honeycomb core. However, the composite beams failed catastrophically at a lower projectile impulse than the steel beams due to the lower ductility of the composite material. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd. This work presents an experimental and numerical investigation to characterise the fracture properties of pure bitumen (the binder in asphalt paving materials). The paper is divided into two parts. The first part describes an experimental study of fracture characterisation parameters of pure bitumen as determined by three-point bend tests. The second part deals with modelling of fracture and failure of bitumen by Finite Element analysis. Fracture mechanics parameters, stress intensity factor, KIC, fracture energy, GIC, and J-integral, JIC, are used for evaluation of bitumen's fracture properties. The material constitutive model developed by Ossa et al. [40,41] which was implemented into a FE code by Costanzi [18] is combined with cohesive zone models (CZM) to simulate the fracture behaviour of pure bitumen. Experimental and numerical results are presented in the form of failure mechanism maps where ductile, brittle and brittle-ductile transition regimes of fracture behaviour are classified. The FE predictions of fracture behaviour match well with experimental results. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.
