This paper explores supply network integration in complex product service systems involving close collaboration between primes. Four case study networks are studied (aerospace, naval, power and telecoms), each involving equipment manufacture and service provision. Factors that support network integration, identified from the literature and refined in the in-depth pilot case, were used to explore which processes support integration of the extended enterprise. Results suggests that a select set of processes support integration of the extended enterprise and that the absence of a shared view on these critical enabling processes results from contextual complexity of the network rather than from competing commercial interests. We investigate the formation of microstructured polymer networks known as Breath Figure templated structures created by the presence of water vapour over evaporating polymer solutions. We use a highly controlled experimental approach to examine this dynamic and non-equilibrium process to uniquely compare pure solvent systems with polymer solutions and demonstrate using a combination of optical microscopy, focused ion-beam milling and SEM analysis that the porous polymer microstructure is completely controlled by the interfacial forces that exist between the water droplet and the solvent until a final drying dilation of the imprints. Water droplet contact angles are the same in the presence or absence of polymer and are independent of size for droplets above 5 μm. The polymer acts a spectator that serves to trap water droplets present at the air interface, and to transfer their shape into the polymer film. For the smallest pores, however, there are unexpected variations in the contact angle with pore size that are consistent with a possible contribution from line tension at these smaller dimensions. © The Royal Society of Chemistry.

The Rolls-Royce Integrated-Planar Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (IP-SOFC) consists of ceramic modules which have electrochemical cells printed on the outer surfaces. The cathodes are the outermost layer of each cell and are supplied with oxygen from air flowing over the outside of the module. The anodes are in direct contact with the ceramic structure and are supplied with fuel from internal gas channels. Natural gas is reformed into hydrogen for use by the fuel cells in a separate reformer module of similar design except that the fuel cells are replaced by a reforming catalyst layer. The performance of the modules is intrinsically linked to the behaviour of the gas flows within their porous structures. Because the porous layers are very thin, a one-dimensional flow model provides a good representation of the flow property variations between fuel channel and fuel cell or reforming catalyst. The multi-component convective-diffusive flows are simulated using a new theory of flow in porous material, the Cylindrical Pore Interpolation Model. The effects of the catalysed methane reforming and water-gas shift chemical reactions are also considered using appropriate kinetic models. It is found that the shift reaction, which is catalysed by the anode material, has certain beneficial effects on the fuel cell module performance. In the reformer module it was found that the flow resistance of the porous support structure makes it difficult to sustain a high methane conversion rate. Although the analysis is based on IP-SOFC geometry, the modelling approach and general conclusions are applicable to other types of SOFC.

Preferential species diffusion is known to have important effects on local flame structure in turbulent premixed flames, and differential diffusion of heat and mass can have significant effects on both local flame structure and global flame parameters, such as turbulent flame speed. However, models for turbulent premixed combustion normally assume that atomic mass fractions are conserved from reactants to fully burnt products. Experiments reported here indicate that this basic assumption may be incorrect for an important class of turbulent flames. Measurements of major species and temperature in the near field of turbulent, bluff-body stabilized, lean premixed methane-air flames (Le=0.98) reveal significant departures from expected conditional mean compositional structure in the combustion products as well as within the flame. Net increases exceeding 10% in the equivalence ratio and the carbon-to-hydrogen atom ratio are observed across the turbulent flame brush. Corresponding measurements across an unstrained laminar flame at similar equivalence ratio are in close agreement with calculations performed using Chemkin with the GRI 3.0 mechanism and multi-component transport, confirming accuracy of experimental techniques. Results suggest that the large effects observed in the turbulent bluff-body burner are cause by preferential transport of H 2 and H 2O through the preheat zone ahead of CO 2 and CO, followed by convective transport downstream and away from the local flame brush. This preferential transport effect increases with increasing velocity of reactants past the bluff body and is apparently amplified by the presence of a strong recirculation zone where excess CO 2 is accumulated. © 2011 The Combustion Institute.

In this study a 5-step reduced chemical kinetic mechanism involving nine species is developed for combustion of Blast Furnace Gas (BFG), a multi-component fuel containing CO/H2/CH4/CO2, typically with low hydrogen, methane and high water fractions, for conditions relevant for stationary gas-turbine combustion. This reduced mechanism is obtained from a 49-reaction skeletal mechanism which is a modified subset of GRI Mech 3.0. The skeletal and reduced mechanisms are validated for laminar flame speeds, ignition delay times and flame structure with available experimental data, and using computational results with a comprehensive set of elementary reactions. Overall, both the skeletal and reduced mechanisms show a very good agreement over a wide range of pressure, reactant temperature and fuel mixture composition. © 2012 The Combustion Institute..

An electronic load interface (ELI) for improving the operational margin of a photovoltaic (PV) dual-converter system under dynamic conditions is presented. The ELI - based on a modified buck-boost converter - interfaces the output of the converters and the load system. It improves the operational margin of the PV dual-converter system by extending the conditions under which the dual-converter system operates at the maximum power point. The ELI is activated as and when needed, so as minimise system losses. By employing the ELI, utilisation and efficiency of a PV dual-converter system increases. In general, the concept of the ELI can be applied to multi-converter PV systems - such as multi-converter inverters, and multi-converter DC-DC converter systems - for performance and efficiency improvement. © 2013 The Institution of Engineering and Technology.
