The effects of initial soil fabric and mode of shearing on quasi-steady state line in void ratiostress space are studied by employing the Distinct Element Method numerical analysis. The results show that the initial soil fabric and the mode of shearing have a profound effect on the location of the quasi-steady state line. The evolution of the soil fabric during the course of undrained shearing shows that the specimens with different initial soil fabrics reach quasi-steady state at various soil fabric conditions. At quasi-steady state, the soil fabric has a significant adjustment to change its behavior from contractive to dilative. As the stress state approaches the steady state, the soil fabrics of different initial conditions become similar. The numerical analysis results are compared qualitatively with the published experimental data and the effects of specimen reconstitution methods and mode of shearing found in the experimental studies canbe systematically explained by the numerical analysis. © 2009 Taylor & Francis Group.

The quest for materials capable of realizing the next generation of electronic and photonic devices continues to fuel research on the electronic, optical and vibrational properties of graphene. Few-layer graphene (FLG) flakes with less than ten layers each show a distinctive band structure. Thus, there is an increasing interest in the physics and applications of FLGs. Raman spectroscopy is one of the most useful and versatile tools to probe graphene samples. Here, we uncover the interlayer shear mode of FLGs, ranging from bilayer graphene (BLG) to bulk graphite, and suggest that the corresponding Raman peak measures the interlayer coupling. This peak scales from ∼43cm -1 in bulk graphite to ∼31cm -1 in BLG. Its low energy makes it sensitive to near-Dirac point quasiparticles. Similar shear modes are expected in all layered materials, providing a direct probe of interlayer interactions. © 2012 Macmillan Publishers Limited. All rights reserved.

This paper presents an analytical formulation of frequency splitting observed in the elliptical modes of single crystal silicon (SCS) micromechanical disk resonators. Taking the anisotropic elasticity of SCS into account, new formulae for computing modal mass and modal stiffness are first derived for accurate prediction of the modal frequency. The derived results are in good agreement with finite element simulation, showing a factor of 10 improvement in the prediction accuracy as compared to using the formula for the isotropic case. In addition, the analysis successfully explains the effect of anisotropy on the modal frequency splitting of primary elliptical modes, for which the maximum modal displacement is aligned with the directions of maximum (1 1 0) and minimum (1 0 0) elasticity respectively on a (1 0 0) SCS wafer. The measured frequency splitting of other degenerate modes is due to the manufacturing imperfections. © 2014 IOP Publishing Ltd.

This paper investigates the effect of mode-localization that arises from structural asymmetry induced by manufacturing tolerances in mechanically coupled, electrically transduced Si MEMS resonators. We demonstrate that in the case of such mechanically coupled resonators, the achievable series motional resistance (R x) is dependent not only on the quality factor (Q) but also on the variations in the eigenvector of the chosen mode of vibration induced by mode localization due to manufacturing tolerances during the fabrication process. We study this effect of mode-localization both theoretically and experimentally in two pairs of coupled double-ended tuning fork resonators with different levels of initial structural asymmetry. The measured series R x is minimal when the system is close to perfect symmetry and any deviation from structural symmetry induced by fabrication tolerances leads to a degradation in the effective R x. Mechanical tuning experiments of the stiffness of one of the coupled resonators was also conducted to study variations in R x as a function of structural asymmetry within the system, the results of which demonstrated consistent variations in motional resistance with predictions. © 2012 IEEE.

We have fabricated a series of polymer stabilized chiral nematic test cells for use as flexoelectro-optic devices. The devices fabricated were based on commercial chiral nematic mixtures which were polymer stabilized so as to enhance the uniformity and stability of the uniform lying helix texture in the cells. During fabrication and test procedures a series of unusual scattering states have been observed within the devices at different viewing angles. The observations made so far indicate that the properties of the scattering state lies somewhere between the focal conic texture and the Grandjean or planar texture and that the devices exhibit both a helical pitch selective reflection and scattering effect. What is even more dramatic is that the wavelength selectivity of the scattering effect can be tuned by an applied field. In addition, we show that it is possible to achieve good uniform lying helix textures from such devices. Moreover, we show that in certain cases the spontaneous alignment of the helix in the plane of the device opens up the possibility of a new mode of switching. The optical and electronic properties of highly tetrahedral amorphous diamond-like carbon (amorphous diamond, a-D) films were investigated. The structure of the films grown on silicon and glass substrates, under similar deposition conditions using a compact filtered cathodic vacuum arc system, are compared using electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). Results from hydrogenation of the films are also reported. The hydrogenated films show two prominent IR absorption peaks centered at 2920 and 2840 cm-1, which are assigned to the stretch mode of the C-H bond in the sp3 configuration on the C-H3 and C-H sites respectively. The high loss EELS spectra show no reduction in the high sp3 content in the hydrogenated films. UV and visible transmission spectra of a-D thin films are also presented. The optical band gap of 2.0-2.2 eV for the a-D films is found to be consistent with the electronic bandgap. The relationship between the intrinsic compressive stress in the films and the refractive index is also presented. The space charge limited current flow is analyzed and coupled with the optical absorption data to give an estimate of 1018 cm-3 eV-1 for the valence band edge density of states.

A Rijke tube is used to demonstrate model-based control of a combustion instability, where controller design is based on measurement of the unstable system. The Rijke tube used was of length 0.75m and had a grid-stabilised laminar flame in its lower half. A microphone was used as a sensor and a loudspeaker as an actuator for active control. The open loop transfer function (OLTF) required for controller design was that from the actuator to the sensor. This was measured experimentally by sending a signal with two components to the actuator. The first was a control component from an empirically designed controller, which was used to stabilise the system, thus eliminating the non-linear limit cycle. The second was a high bandwidth signal for identification of the OLTF. This approach to measuring the OLTF is generic and can be applied to large-scale combustors. The measured OLTF showed that only the fundamental mode of the tube was unstable; this was consistent with the OLTF predicted by a mathematical model of the tube, involving 1-D linear acoustic waves and a time delay heat release model. Based on the measured OLTF, a controller to stabilise the instability was designed using Nyquist techniques. This was implemented and was seen to result in an 80dB reduction in the microphone pressure spectrum. A robustness study was performed by adding an additional length to the top of the Rijke tobe. The controller was found to achieve control up to an increase in tube length of 19%. This compared favourably with the empirical controller, which lost control for an increase in tube length of less than 3%.

A hybrid semiconductor power device has been designed which combines IGBT switching and thyristor on-state characteristics. A single gate signal controls the switching and triggers the transitions between an IGBT and a thyristor mode of operation. This paper discusses aspects of the switching behaviour of this and of similar devices. Simulation results of an example structure are presented and conceivable developments in the switching characteristics of hybrid devices are discussed.
