An experimental study of local orientations around whiskers in deformed metal matrix composites has been used to determine the strain gradients existing in the material following tensile deformation. These strain fields have been represented as arrays of geometrically necessary dislocations, and the material flow stress predicted using a standard dislocation hardening model. Whilst the correlation between this and the measured flow stress is reasonable, the experimentally determined strain gradients are lower by a factor of 5-10 than values obtained in previous estimates made using continuum plasticity finite element models. The local orientations around the whiskers contain a large amount of detailed information about the strain patterns in the material, and a novel approach is made to representing some of this information and to correlating it with microstructural observations. © 1998 Acta Metallurgica Inc. A hybrid method for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations is presented. The method inherits the attractive stabilizing mechanism of upwinded discontinuous Galerkin methods when momentum advection becomes significant, equal-order interpolations can be used for the velocity and pressure fields, and mass can be conserved locally. Using continuous Lagrange multiplier spaces to enforce flux continuity across cell facets, the number of global degrees of freedom is the same as for a continuous Galerkin method on the same mesh. Different from our earlier investigations on the approach for the Navier-Stokes equations, the pressure field in this work is discontinuous across cell boundaries. It is shown that this leads to very good local mass conservation and, for an appropriate choice of finite element spaces, momentum conservation. Also, a new form of the momentum transport terms for the method is constructed such that global energy stability is guaranteed, even in the absence of a pointwise solenoidal velocity field. Mass conservation, momentum conservation, and global energy stability are proved for the time-continuous case and for a fully discrete scheme. The presented analysis results are supported by a range of numerical simulations. © 2012 Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics.

Superconductors have a bright future; they are able to carry very high current densities, switch rapidly in electronic circuits, detect extremely small perturbations in magnetic fields, and sustain very high magnetic fields. Of most interest to large-scale electrical engineering applications are the ability to carry large currents and to provide large magnetic fields. There are many projects that use the first property, and these have concentrated on power generation, transmission, and utilization; however, there are relatively few, which are currently exploiting the ability to sustain high magnetic fields. The main reason for this is that high field wound magnets can and have been made from both BSCCO and YBCO, but currently, their cost is much higher than the alternative provided by low-Tc materials such as Nb3Sn and NbTi. An alternative form of the material is the bulk form, which can be magnetized to high fields. This paper explains the mechanism, which allows superconductors to be magnetized without the need for high field magnets to perform magnetization. A finite-element model is presented, which is based on the E-J current law. Results from this model show how magnetization of the superconductor builds up cycle upon cycle when a traveling magnetic wave is induced above the superconductor. © 2011 IEEE.

High temperature superconducting (HTS) synchronous motors can offer significant weight and size reductions, as well as improved efficiency, over conventional copper-wound machines due to the higher current density of high temperature superconducting (HTS) materials. In order to optimise the design parameters and performance of such a machine, this paper proposes a basic physical model of an air-cored HTS synchronous motor with a copper armature winding and HTS field winding. An analytical method for the field analysis in the synchronous motor is then presented, followed by a numerical finite element analysis (FEA) model to verify the analytical solution. The model is utilised to study the influence of the geometry of the HTS coils on the magnetic field at the armature winding, and geometrical parameter optimisation is carried out using this theoretical model to obtain a more sinusoidal magnetic field at the armature, which has a major influence on the performance of the motor.

We report the observation of strongly temperature (T)-dependent spectral lines in electronic Raman-scattering spectra of graphite in a high magnetic field up to 45 T applied along the c axis. The magnetic field quantizes the in-plane motion, while the out-of-plane motion remains free, effectively reducing the system dimension from 3 to 1. Optically created electron-hole pairs interact with, or shake up, the one-dimensional Fermi sea in the lowest Landau subbands. Based on the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid theory, we show that interaction effects modify the spectral line shape from (ω-Δ)-1/2 to (ω-Δ)2α-1/2 at T = 0. At finite T, we predict a thermal broadening factor that increases linearly with T. Our model reproduces the observed T-dependent line shape, determining the electron-electron interaction parameter α to be ∼0.05 at 40 T. © 2014 American Physical Society.

The ability to generate a permanent, stable magnetic field unsupported by an electromotive force is fundamental to a variety of engineering applications. Bulk high temperature superconducting (HTS) materials can trap magnetic fields of magnitude over ten times higher than the maximum field produced by conventional magnets, which is limited practically to rather less than 2 T. In this paper, two large c-axis oriented, single-grain YBCO and GdBCO bulk superconductors are magnetized by the pulsed field magnetization (PFM) technique at temperatures of 40 and 65 K and the characteristics of the resulting trapped field profile are investigated with a view of magnetizing such samples as trapped field magnets (TFMs) in situ inside a trapped flux-type superconducting electric machine. A comparison is made between the temperatures at which the pulsed magnetic field is applied and the results have strong implications for the optimum operating temperature for TFMs in trapped flux-type superconducting electric machines. The effects of inhomogeneities, which occur during the growth process of single-grain bulk superconductors, on the trapped field and maximum temperature rise in the sample are modelled numerically using a 3D finite-element model based on the H-formulation and implemented in Comsol Multiphysics 4.3a. The results agree qualitatively with the observed experimental results, in that inhomogeneities act to distort the trapped field profile and reduce the magnitude of the trapped field due to localized heating within the sample and preferential movement and pinning of flux lines around the growth section regions (GSRs) and growth sector boundaries (GSBs), respectively. The modelling framework will allow further investigation of various inhomogeneities that arise during the processing of (RE)BCO bulk superconductors, including inhomogeneous Jc distributions and the presence of current-limiting grain boundaries and cracks, and it can be used to assist optimization of processing and PFM techniques for practical bulk superconductor applications. © 2014 IOP Publishing Ltd.

This paper extends the air-gap element (AGE) to enable the modeling of flat air gaps. AGE is a macroelement originally proposed by Abdel-Razek et al.for modeling annular air gaps in electrical machines. The paper presents the theory of the new macroelement and explains its implementation within a time-stepped finite-element (FE) code. It validates the solution produced by the new macroelement by comparing it with that obtained by using an FE mesh with a discretized air gap. It then applies the model to determine the open-circuit electromotive force of an axial-flux permanent-magnet machine and compares the results with measurements.

The magnetisation of bulk high temperature superconductors (HTS), such as RE-Ba-Cu-O [(RE)BCO, where RE is a rare earth element or Y], by a practical technique is essential for their application in high field, permanent magnet-like devices. Research to-date into the pulsed field magnetisation (PFM) of these materials, however, has been limited generally to experimental techniques, with relatively little progress in the development of theoretical models. This is because not only is a multi-physics approach needed to take account of the heating of the samples but also the high electric fields generated are well above the regime in which there are reliable experimental results. This paper describes a framework of theoretical simulation using the finite element method (FEM) that is applicable to both single- and multi-pulse magnetisation processes of (RE)BCO bulk superconductors. The model incorporates the heat equation and provides a convenient way of determining the distribution of trapped field, current density and temperature change within a bulk superconductor at each stage of the magnetisation process. An example of the single-pulse magnetisation of a (RE)BCO bulk is described. Potentially, the model may serve as a cost-effective tool for the optimisation of the bulk geometry and the magnetisation profile in multi-pulse magnetisation processes. © 2010 IOP Publishing Ltd.

In speech recognition systems language model (LMs) are often constructed by training and combining multiple n-gram models. They can be either used to represent different genres or tasks found in diverse text sources, or capture stochastic properties of different linguistic symbol sequences, for example, syllables and words. Unsupervised LM adaptation may also be used to further improve robustness to varying styles or tasks. When using these techniques, extensive software changes are often required. In this paper an alternative and more general approach based on weighted finite state transducers (WFSTs) is investigated for LM combination and adaptation. As it is entirely based on well-defined WFST operations, minimum change to decoding tools is needed. A wide range of LM combination configurations can be flexibly supported. An efficient on-the-fly WFST decoding algorithm is also proposed. Significant error rate gains of 7.3% relative were obtained on a state-of-the-art broadcast audio recognition task using a history dependently adapted multi-level LM modelling both syllable and word sequences. ©2010 IEEE.
