The low-density parity check codes whose performance is closest to the Shannon limit are `Gallager codes' based on irregular graphs. We compare alternative methods for constructing these graphs and present two results. First, we find a `super-Poisson' construction which gives a small improvement in empirical performance over a random construction. Second, whereas Gallager codes normally take N2 time to encode, we investigate constructions of regular and irregular Gallager codes that allow more rapid encoding and have smaller memory requirements in the encoder. We find that these `fast encoding' Gallager codes have equally good performance.

Infrared magnitude-redshift relations for the 3CR and 6C samples of radio galaxies are presented for a wide range of plausible cosmological models, including those with non-zero cosmological constant OmegaLambda. Variations in the galaxy formation redshift, metallicity and star formation history are also considered. The results of the modelling are displayed in terms of magnitude differences between the models and no-evolution tracks, illustrating the amount of K-band evolution necessary to account for the observational data. Given a number of plausible assumptions, the results of these analyses suggest that: (i) cosmologies which predict T_0xH_0>1 (where T_0 denotes the current age of the universe) can be excluded; (ii) the star formation redshift should lie in the redshift interval 5galaxy metallicities and star-formation histories are made. Without such modifications, even after accounting for stellar evolution, the high redshift radio galaxies are more luminous (ie. more massive) than those nearby in models with finite OmegaLambda, including the favoured model with Omega=0.3, OmegaLambda=0.7. For cosmological models with larger values of T_0xH_0, the conclusions are the same regardless of whether any adjustments are made or not. The implications of these results for cosmology and models of galaxy formation are discussed.

Previous investigations have unveiled size effects in the strength of metallic foams under simple shear - the shear strength increases with diminishing specimen size, a phenomena similar to that shown by Fleck et al. (Acta Mat., 1994, Vol. 42, p. 475.) on the torsion tests of copper wires of various radii. In this study, experimental study of the constrained deformation of a foam layer sandwiched between two steel plates has been conducted. The sandwiched plates are subjected to combined shear and normal loading. It is found that measured yield loci of metallic foams in the normal and shear stress space corresponding to various foam layer thicknesses are self-similar in shape but their size increases as the foam layer thickness decreases. Moreover, the strains profiles across the foam layer thickness are parabolic instead of uniform; their values increase from the interfaces between the foam layer and the steel plates and reach their maximum in the middle of the foam layer, yielding boundary layers adjacent to the steel plates. In order to further explore the origin of observed size effects, micromechanics models have been developed, with the foam layer represented by regular and irregular honeycombs. Though the regular honeycomb model is seen to underestimate the size effects, the irregular honeycomb model faithfully captures the observed features of the constrained deformation of metallic foams.

The constrained deformation of an aluminium alloy foam sandwiched between steel substrates has been investigated. The sandwich plates are subjected to through-thickness shear and normal loading, and it is found that the face sheets constrain the foam against plastic deformation and result in a size effect: the yield strength increases with diminishing thickness of foam layer. The strain distribution across the foam core has been measured by a visual strain mapping technique, and a boundary layer of reduced straining was observed adjacent to the face sheets. The deformation response of the aluminium foam layer was modelled by the elastic-plastic finite element analysis of regular and irregular two dimensional honeycombs, bonded to rigid face sheets; in the simulations, the rotation of the boundary nodes of the cell-wall beam elements was set to zero to simulate full constraint from the rigid face sheets. It is found that the regular honeycomb under-estimates the size effect whereas the irregular honeycomb provides a faithful representation of both the observed size effect and the observed strain profile through the foam layer. Additionally, a compressible version of the Fleck-Hutchinson strain gradient theory was used to predict the size effect; by identifying the cell edge length as the relevant microstructural length scale the strain gradient model is able to reproduce the observed strain profiles across the layer and the thickness dependence of strength. © 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. An 8 × 8 pipelined parallel multiplier which uses the Dadda scheme is presented. The multiplier has been implemented in a 3-μm n-well CMOS process with two layers of metal using a standard cell automatic placement and routing program. The design uses a form of pipelined carry look-ahead adder in the final stage of summation, thus providing a significant contribution to the high performance of the multiplier. The design is expected to operate at a clock frequency of at least 50 MHz and has a flush time of seven clock cycles. The design illustrates a possible method of implementing an irregular architecture in VLSI using multiple levels of low-resistance, low-capacitance interconnect and automated layout techniques.

The shallow water equations are widely used in modelling environmental flows. Being a hyperbolic system of differential equations, they admit shocks that represent hydraulic jumps and bores. Although the water surface can be solved satisfactorily with the modern shock-capturing schemes, the predicted flow rate often suffers from imbalances where shocks occur, eg the mass conservation is violated by failing to maintain a constant discharge rate at every cross-section in a steady open channel flow. A total-variation-diminishing Lax-Wendroff scheme is developed, and used to demonstrate how to achieve an exact flux balance. The performance of the proposed methods is inspected through some test cases, which include 1- and 2-dimensional, flat and irregular bed scenarios. The proposed methods are shown to preserve the mass exactly, and can be easily extended to other shock-capturing models.

A modified gel-casting technique was used to fabricate a 1-3 piezoelectric ceramic/polymer composite substrate formed by irregular-shaped pillar arrays of small dimensions and kerfs. This technique involves the polymerization of aqueous piezoelectric (PZT) suspensions with added water-soluble epoxy resin and polyamine-based hardener that lead to high strength, high density and resilient ceramic bodies. Soft micromoulding was used to shape the ceramic segments, and micropillars with lateral features down to 4 m and height-to-width aspect ratios of ∼10 were achieved. The composite exhibited a clear thickness resonance mode at approximately 70 MHz and a k eff ∼ 0.51, demonstrating that the ceramic micropillars possess good electrical properties. Furthermore, gel-casting allows the fabrication of ceramic structures with non-conventional shapes; hence, device design is not limited by the standard fabrication methods. This is of particular benefit for high-frequency transducers where the critical design dimensions are reduced. © 2012 IOP Publishing Ltd.
