The Brushless Doubly-Fed Machine (BDFM) is a brushless electrical generator which allows variable speed operation with a power converter rated at only a fraction of the machine rating. This paper details an example implementation of the BDFM in a medium-scale wind turbine. Details of a simplified design procedure based on electrical and magnetic loadings are given along with the results of tests on the manufactured machine. These show that a BDFM of the scale works as expected but that the 4/8 BDFM chosen was slower and thus larger than the turbine's original induction machine. The implementation of the turbine system is discussed, including the vector-based control scheme that ensures the BDFM operates at a demanded speed and the Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) scheme that selects the rotor speed that extracts the most power from the incident wind conditions.

Pico-PV is an excellent technology for bringing electric light to rural areas in the developing world and replacing kerosene lanterns and candles. However, as pico-PV is a comparatively new technology, relatively little is known about appropriate methods for sustainable product development and deployment. For this reason current dissemination methods are often ineffective and unsustainable. This research aims to help project developers deploy pico-PV technologies successfully and in a sustainable manner. To achieve this, a conceptual framework of key sustainability criteria along the value chain was developed and tested. The analysis revealed that the most important criteria for the sustainable deployment of pico-PV systems are: (a) easy and safe operation of the product; (b) that a system for product return is established; (c) the retailer understands the target market and (d) the end-user is aware of the product's existence and its benefits. This research reveals that criteria (b) and (c) are of greatest concern. In light of these findings, the authors propose to focus on the following five factors; namely: (a) raising awareness for certification and creating market reassurance; (b) introducing support mechanisms to facilitate local repair; (c) using existing supply channels and establishing in-country (dis)assembly; (d) introducing financial support mechanisms at product supply stages and; (e) undertaking marketing campaigns. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Within the low Reynolds number regime at which birds and small air vehicles operate (Re=15,000-500,000), flow is beset with laminar separation bubbles and bubble burst which can lead to loss of lift and early onset of stall. Recent video footage of an eagle's wings in flight reveals an inconspicuous wing feature: the sudden deployment of a row of feathers from the lower surface of the wing to create a leading edge flap. An understanding of the aerodynamic function of this flap has been developed through a series of low speed wind tunnel tests performed on an Eppler E423 aerofoil. Experiments took place at Reynolds numbers ranging from 40000 to 140000 and angles of attack up to 30°. In the lower range of tested Reynolds numbers, application of the flap was found to substantially enhance aerofoil performance by augmenting the lift and limiting the drag at certain incidences. The leading edge flap was determined to act as a transition device at low Reynolds numbers, preventing the formation of separation bubbles and consequently decreasing the speed at which stall occurs during landing and manoeuvring.

On-body sensor systems for sport are challenging since the sensors must be lightweight and small to avoid discomfort, and yet robust and highly accurate to withstand and capture the fast movements associated with sport. In this work, we detail our experience of building such an on-body system for track athletes. The paper describes the design, implementation and deployment of an on-body sensor system for sprint training sessions. We autonomously profile sprints to derive quantitative metrics to improve training sessions. Inexpensive Force Sensitive Resistors (FSRs) are used to capture foot events that are subsequently analysed and presented back to the coach. We show how to identify periods of sprinting from the FSR data and how to compute metrics such as ground contact time. We evaluate our system using force plates and show that millisecond-level accuracy is achievable when estimating contact times. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Node placement plays a significant role in the effective and successful deployment of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), i.e., meeting design goals such as cost effectiveness, coverage, connectivity, lifetime and data latency. In this paper, we propose a new strategy to assist in the placement of Relay Nodes (RNs) for a WSN monitoring underground tunnel infrastructure. By applying for the first time an accurate empirical mean path loss propagation model along with a well fitted fading distribution model specifically defined for the tunnel environment, we address the RN placement problem with guaranteed levels of radio link performance. The simulation results show that the choice of appropriate path loss model and fading distribution model for a typical environment is vital in the determination of the number and the positions of RNs. Furthermore, we adapt a two-tier clustering multi-hop framework in which the first tier of the RN placement is modelled as the minimum set cover problem, and the second tier placement is solved using the search-and-find algorithm. The implementation of the proposed scheme is evaluated by simulation, and it lays the foundations for further work in WSN planning for underground tunnel applications. © 2010 IEEE.
