Bordetella pertussis, the whooping cough pathogen, secretes several virulence factors among which adenylate cyclase toxin (ACT) is essential for establishment of the disease in the respiratory tract. ACT weakens host defenses by suppressing important bactericidal activities of the phagocytic cells. Up to now, it was believed that cell intoxication by ACT was a consequence of the accumulation of abnormally high levels of cAMP, generated exclusively beneath the host plasma membrane by the toxin N-terminal catalytic adenylate cyclase (AC) domain, upon its direct translocation across the lipid bilayer. Here we show that host calpain, a calcium-dependent Cys-protease, is activated into the phagocytes by a toxin-triggered calcium rise, resulting in the proteolytic cleavage of the toxin N-terminal domain that releases a catalytically active "soluble AC''. The calpain-mediated ACT processing allows trafficking of the "soluble AC'' domain into subcellular organella. At least two strategic advantages arise from this singular toxin cleavage, enhancing the specificity of action, and simultaneously preventing an indiscriminate activation of cAMP effectors throughout the cell. The present study provides novel insights into the toxin mechanism of action, as the calpain-mediated toxin processing would confer ACT the capacity for a space- and time-coordinated production of different cAMP "pools'', which would play different roles in the cell pathophysiology.

We show that a category of one-dimensional XY-type models may enable high-fidelity quantum state transmissions, regardless of details of coupling configurations. This observation leads to a fault-tolerant design of a state transmission setup. The setup is fault-tolerant, with specified thresholds, against engineering failures of coupling configurations, fabrication imperfections or defects, and even time-dependent noises. We propose an experimental implementation of the fault-tolerant scheme using hard-core bosons in one-dimensional optical lattices.

[EU]Gradu Amaierako Lan honetan offshore presiopeko hodien (gasa nahiz petrolioa garraiatzen duten hodien) brida bidezko loturetako torlojutze sekuentziak aztertuko dira. Aplikazio hauek suposatzen duten inbertsio ekonomikoa dela eta, ihesak ekiditeko asmoz, ezinbestekoa da brida hauek elkarri lotzeko dituzten torlojuen kargak uniformeki bananduta egotea torloju guztietan, interakzio elastikoak eta pibotamendu mugimenduak helburu hori zailtzen badute ere. Gaur egun torlojutze sekuentziak ASME-k araututa baldin baditu ere, ez dira batere erosoak, torloju guztiak ordena zehatz batean estutu behar direlako, eta estutze hauek ez direlako egoerarik erosoenetan egiten, denbora asko galduz. Horregatik, sinpletasuna lortzeko eta denbora eta dirua aurrezteko, torlojutze sekuentzia horiek optimizatzea izango da helburu nagusia. Aipaturiko lana aurrera eramateko, bi brida modeloren torlojutze analisiak egin beharko dira, berauek parametro batzuen menpe jarrita, estutze sekuentzietan duten eragina ikusi ahal izateko.

The potential impact that offshore wind farms may cause on nearby marine radars should be considered before the wind farm is installed. Strong radar echoes from the turbines may degrade radars' detection capability in the area around the wind farm. Although conventional computational methods provide accurate results of scattering by wind turbines, they are not directly implementable in software tools that can be used to conduct the impact studies. This paper proposes a simple model to assess the clutter that wind turbines may generate on marine radars. This method can be easily implemented in the system modeling software tools for the impact analysis of a wind farm in a real scenario.
