Population age structure and private consumption in Spain

In this paper we study the effect of population age distribution upon private consumption expenditure in Spain from 1964 to 1997 using aggregate data. We obtain four main results. First, changes in the population pyramid have substantial effects upon the behaviour of private consumption. Second, the pattern of the coefficients of the demographic variables is not consistent with the simplest version of the life cycle hypothesis. Third, we estimate the impact of the demographic transition upon consumption and find positive values associated with episodes in which the shares of groups of individuals with expenditure levels higher (lower) than the mean increased (decreased). Fourth, the results are robust to alternative specifications for the population age distribution.

Tension and Ampacity Monitoring System for Overhead Lines

Real time monitoring allows the determination of the line state and the calculation of the actual rating value. The real time monitoring systems measure sag, conductor tension, conductor temperature or weather related magnitudes. In this paper, a new ampacity monitoring system for overhead lines, based on the conductor tension, the ambient temperature, the solar radiation and the current intensity, is presented. The measurements are transmitted via GPRS to a control center where a software program calculates the ampacity value. The system takes into account the creep deformation experienced by the conductors during their lifetime and calibrates the tension-temperature reference and the maximum allowable temperature in order to obtain the ampacity. The system includes both hardware implementation and remote control software.

Luces y sombras en las Encuestas de Pobreza y Desigualdades Sociales desde el punto de vista del género

En estas páginas nos proponemos dos objetivos. El primero es analizar con detalle la metodología de medición de la pobreza de las Encuestas de Pobreza y Desigualdades Sociales (EPDS) que se realiza en la CAPV con el fin de desvelar sus principales carencias y potencialidades en cuanto a la incorporación de la perspectiva de género en el estudio de la pobreza. El segundo es estudiar, entre 1996 y 2004,la evolución de las situaciones de pobreza entre las mujeres y compararla con la evolución de la pobreza entre los hombres. En estos ocho años, el crecimiento económico ha sido muy importante, y ello se ha traducido en una reducción de la incidencia de la pobreza que no se ha dejado notar con la misma intensidad en todos los colectivos. Nos preguntamos si las mujeres, como colectivo que estaba peor situado, han conocido reducciones de las tasas de pobreza inferiores a las generales. Parece que la mejora de la coyuntura económica ha beneficiado a los que comparativamente estaban mejor.
