Global warming of the oceans is expected to alter the environmental conditions that determine the growth of a fishery resource. Most climate change studies are based on models and scenarios that focus on economic growth, or they concentrate on simulating the potential losses or cost to fisheries due to climate change. However, analysis that addresses model optimization problems to better understand of the complex dynamics of climate change and marine ecosystems is still lacking. In this paper a simple algorithm to compute transitional dynamics in order to quantify the effect of climate change on the European sardine fishery is presented. The model results indicate that global warming will not necessarily lead to a monotonic decrease in the expected biomass levels. Our results show that if the resource is exploited optimally then in the short run, increases in the surface temperature of the fishery ground are compatible with higher expected biomass and economic profit.

[EN]If a frog is placed in boiling water, it will jump out; but if it is placed in cold water that is slowly heated, it will not perceive the danger and will be cooked to death. Without de ability to observe changing environmental conditions, the frog can find itself boiled alive before realizing it is in trouble. This is known as the boiling frog syndrome. In the same manner, it is impossible to be competitive without knowing and being aware of the environmental changes. From here comes the necessity for the Technological Watch and Competitive Intelligence. The main goals of this project are to evaluate the current Technological Vigilance System of the IK4-Tekniker research center and to develop services that help in improving the system. For that purpose, first of all the Technological Vigilance is going to be placed in the business field and its origins are going to be explained. Following that, the Technological Vigilance system of IK4-Tekniker is going to be analyzed for its evaluation. Finally the creation of the services previously mentioned are going to be described in detail, showing the technologies and tools used for that purpose like the Responsive Web Design.

INGLÉS:Juvenile mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) were collected and maintained under restrictive and optimal feeding conditions. After 7 months maintenance fast and slow growth individuals were selected for study of the effect of diet quality on selection efficiencies and absorption of food in fast and slow growth mussels. The objective of this experiment was to confirm that the physiological components responsible for the differentiation were able to vary according to the environmental conditions. The analysis of physiological traits indicates that under conditions of abundant food efficiency and absorption efficiences are the main factors that explain the differences in growth. Under conditions of restricted food are physiological differences that give rise to differences in growth.

Single nucleotide-polymorphisms (SNPs) are a source of diversity among human population, which may be responsible for the different individual susceptibility to diseases and/or response to drugs, among other phenotypic traits. Several low penetrance susceptibility genes associated with malignant melanoma (MM) have been described, including genes related to pigmentation, DNA damage repair and oxidative stress pathways. In the present work, we conducted a candidate gene association study based on proteins and genes whose expression we had detected altered in melanoma cell lines as compared to normal melanocytes. The result was the selection of 88 loci and 384 SNPs, of which 314 fulfilled our quality criteria for a case-control association study. The SNP rs6854854 in ANXA5 was statistically significant after conservative Bonferroni correction when 464 melanoma patients and 400 controls were analyzed in a discovery Phase I. However, this finding could not be replicated in the validation phase, perhaps because the minor allele frequency of SNP rs6854854 varies depending on the geographical region considered. Additionally, a second SNP (rs6431588) located on ILKAP was found to be associated with melanoma after considering a combined set of 1,883 MM cases and 1,358 disease-free controls. The OR was 1.29 (95% CI 1.12-1.48; p-value= 4x10(-4)). Both SNPs, rs6854854 in ANXA5 and rs6431588 in ILKAP, show population structure, which, assuming that the Spanish population is not significantly structured, suggests a role of these loci on a specific genetic adaptation to different environmental conditions. Furthermore, the biological relevance of these genes in MM is supported by in vitro experiments, which show a decrease in the transcription levels of ANXA5 and ILKAP in melanoma cells compared to normal melanocytes.

[eus] Euskal kostaldeko mareazpiko begetazioak aldaketa esanguratsuak jasan ditu azken hiru hamarkadetan. Aurretik egindako ikerketek jakinarazi dute aldaketa horiek klima-aldaketak eragindakoak direla. Ikerketa honen helburua inpaktu horri buruzko informazio gehiago lortzea da. Horretarako, sakonera handiko uretako fitobentosaren osaerari eta ugaritasunari buruzko balioespena egin da. 2014. urteko udan 7 trantsektu ezarri ziren, Kobaroneko muturretik Muskizeko muturreraino. Trantsektu horiek aurretik ikertuak izan ziren 1982 eta 2007 urteetan, eta laginketa suntsitzailea egin zen. Analisi estatistikoek aldaketa esanguratsuak erakusten dituzte sakoneko (9-11m) komunitateetan azken 32 urteetan. Uraren tenperaturaren emendioa eta eguzki-erradiazio altuagoa detektatutako aldaketen erantzuleak izan daitezke neurri batean. Pterosiphonia complanata espezie esziafiloaren gainbeherak eta Cystoseira baccata eta Aphanocladia stichidiosa espezieen ugaritzeak hipotesi hori azaltzen dute. Espero genuenaren kontra, Gelidium corneum espeziea, sakontasun gutxiko uretan gainbehera bortitza jasaten ari dena, ez da 9 metrotik beherako sakonerara lekualdatu. Hala ere, ezin da ziurtatu egungo ingurumeneko baldintzak optimoak ez direnik G. corneum espeziearen garapenerako 9-11 metroko sakoneretan. Migrazio bertikal hori ez gertatzearen arrazoi onargarriena C. baccata- rekiko lehiakortasuna dela dirudi. Bestalde, C. baccata hiru dimentsiotako habitatak eratzeko gai den tamaina handiko alga bat da, espezie askorentzat babesleku gisa diharduena. Ondorioz, haren hedapenak G. corneum-ek sakonera txikiagoetan betetzen zuen funtzioa ordezka lezake neurri batean.

Climate change has differentially affected the timing of seasonal events for interacting trophic levels, and this has often led to increased selection on seasonal timing. Yet, the environmental variables driving this selection have rarely been identified, limiting our ability to predict future ecological impacts of climate change. Using a dataset spanning 31 years from a natural population of pied flycatchers (Ficedula hypoleuca), we show that directional selection on timing of reproduction intensified in the first two decades (1980-2000) but weakened during the last decade (2001-2010). Against expectation, this pattern could not be explained by the temporal variation in the phenological mismatch with food abundance. We therefore explored an alternative hypothesis that selection on timing was affected by conditions individuals experience when arriving in spring at the breeding grounds: arriving early in cold conditions may reduce survival. First, we show that in female recruits, spring arrival date in the first breeding year correlates positively with hatch date; hence, early-hatched individuals experience colder conditions at arrival than late-hatched individuals. Second, we show that when temperatures at arrival in the recruitment year were high, early-hatched young had a higher recruitment probability than when temperatures were low. We interpret this as a potential cost of arriving early in colder years, and climate warming may have reduced this cost. We thus show that higher temperatures in the arrival year of recruits were associated with stronger selection for early reproduction in the years these birds were born. As arrival temperatures in the beginning of the study increased, but recently declined again, directional selection on timing of reproduction showed a nonlinear change. We demonstrate that environmental conditions with a lag of up to two years can alter selection on phenological traits in natural populations, something that has important implications for our understanding of how climate can alter patterns of selection in natural populations.
