[EN] The aim of this paper is to propose some lines of investigation and new methods that can be followed in order to increase our knowledge of the History of Basque Linguistics. The main claim put forward here is that we must profit from the new methodological innovations developed by the H istoriography of Linguistics since the 60's. In the first section, different aspects are mentioned of the relevance of the study of Basque Linguistic Historiography. The second section comments on the boom of the Historiography of Linguistics from the 60's, its causes and its consequences; furthermore, it reports on the methodological models emerged from the discussions since then (as shown in works by Koerner, Swiggers, and many others). The third section points out some difficulties and challenges of the study of the History of Basque Linguistics, and suggests both some priorities for that study and possible lines of investigation. In order to illustrate the different points made throughout the paper, the reader is referred, when possible, to examples chosen from recent investigations or from future topics of research.

Gaur egungo eskola euskaldunak ikasleak alfabetatzeko erronka izateaz gain, ikasleak euskalduntzeko erantzukizuna ere bere gain hartzen du. Esku artean duzun lan honetan, herri eta eskola zehatz baten hizkuntza egoera aztertu da. Herritar gehienek euskaraz jakin arren, asko ez dira etxean euskaraz mintzatzen eta honek eragin zuzena du eskolako ikasleek ahoz adierazteko duten euskara maila baxuan eta elkarrekin komunikatzeko erabiltzen duten hizkuntzan, gaztelania alegia. Ahozkotasuna lantzeko hutsuneei eta eskolako hizkuntza beharrizan errealei erantzuna emateko, esku-hartze enpiriko baten proposamena diseinatu da; jolasetan oinarritutako tailerren bidez euskarazko ahozko adierazpena lantzeko.

[EUS] Hizkuntzaren sustrai biologikoen ikerketak aurrerapausu handiak egin ditu azken urteotan. Ikerketa hau alorrartekoa da nahitaez, eta hizkuntzalaritza, psikologia, neurozientzia eta genetikaren arteko bilbatura batek osatzen du «biohizkuntzalaritza» eta hizkuntzaren neurokognizioa itxuratzea xede duen eremu berri hau. Artikulu honetan ezagutza eremu honen hastapeneko itxurapen bat eskainzen da, hizkuntzaren genetikan eta neurokognizioan azken urteotan egin diren zenbait urrats aurkeztuaz.

One of the most controversial inquiries in academic writing is whether it is admissible to use first person pronouns in a scientific paper or not. Many professors discourage their students from using them, rather favoring a more passive tone, and thus causing novices to avoid inserting themselves into their texts in an expert-like manner. Abundant research, however, has recently attested that negotiation of identity is plausible in academic prose, and there is no need for a paper to be void of an authorial identity. Because in the course of the English Studies Degree we have received opposing prompts in the use of I, the aim of this dissertation is to throw some light upon this vexed issue. To this end, I compiled a corpus of 16 Research Articles (RAs) that comprises two sub-corpora, one featuring Linguistics RAs and the other one Literature RAs, and each, in turn, consists of articles written by American and British authors. I then searched for real occurrences of I, me, my, mine, we, us, our and ours, and studied their frequency, rhetorical functions and distribution along each paper. The results obtained certainly show that academic writing is no longer the faceless prose that it used to be, for I is highly used in both disciplines and varieties of English. Concerning functions, the most typically used roles were the use of I to take credit for the writer’s research process, and also those involving plural forms. With respect to the spatial disposition, all sections welcomed first person pronouns, but the Method and the Results/Discussion sections seem to stimulate their appearance. On the basis of these findings, I suggest that an L2 writing pedagogy that is mindful not only of the language proficiency, but also of the students’ own identity may have a beneficial effect on the composition of their texts.
