The Okhotsk Sea and Oyashio Region

This is a final report(1993)of PICES Working Group 1. The objective of the report was to present a review of the importance of the Okhotsk Sea and Oyashio Region on the Ventilation of the North Pacific Ocean, such as the formation of the North Pacific intermediate water. (PDF contains 235 pages)

Toxicity of linear alkylbenene sulphonate (LAS) detergent, to Clarias gariepinus fingerlings

The acute toxicity of Linear Alkylbenzene Sulphonate (LAS) detergent to Clarias gariepinus fingerlings was investigated using static bioassays and continous aeration over a period of 96h. The 96h LC sub(50) was determined as 24.00mgL super(-1). During the exposure period, the test fish exhibited several behavioural changes before death such as restlessness, rapid swimming, loss of balance, respiratory distress and haemorrhaging of gill filaments amongst others. Opercula ventilation rate as well as visual examination of dead fish indicates lethal effects of the detergent on the fish. Water quality examination showed increase in pH from 6.55 to the alkaline, death point of 10.55. There was also a remarkabel rise of alkalinity from 20.00mgL super(-1) to 52.50mgL super(-1)

A record of Probopyrus bithynis (Richardson, 1904) in Macrobrachium rosenbergii (De Man) from coastal Andhra Pradesh, India, with special reference to host-parasite relationship

An incidence of bopyrid isopod infestation was observed in giant freshwater prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii (de Man) juveniles (40-60 mm/0.9-1.5 g) in a scampi culture farm in East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh. The presence of parasite was observed by conspicuous boil like swelling of the branchial chamber where the parasite was found lodged on the gills. The infested gill was highly compressed and necrosed. Only one branchial chamber was infested by the parasite while the other gill was normal. The infested prawns were thin and emaciated and showed retarded growth. The parasite was identified as Probopyrus bithynis (Richardson, 1904) which caused inhibition of ventilation due to its permanent lodging in the branchial chamber and impaired the gaseous exchange by gills. It was also observed that this parasite caused parasitic castration in the infested prawns.
