ENGLISH: The purposes of the Convention which established the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission have been discussed in the Commission's Annual Report for 1950-51 (Schaefer, 1952) and in subsequent Annual Reports. One of its functions is to gather and report on biological information for the tunas of the Eastern Tropical Pacific, the yellowfin tuna (Neothunnus macropterus) and skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis). This report gives the results of a study of the relationships between the length and the weight of individuals of each of these species, derived from samples of fish of commercial sizes captured during the course of regular fishing operations in several areas of the Eastern Tropical Pacific Ocean SPANISH: Los propósitos de la Convención que estableció la Comisión Interamericana del Atún Tropical han sido expuestos en el Informe Anual de dicho organismo correspondiente a 1950-51 (Schaefer, 1952), y en los siguientes informes anuales.

We analyzed the relationships between the larval and juvenile abundances of selected estuarine-dependent fishes that spawn during the winter in continental shelf waters of the U.S. Atlantic coast. Six species were included in the analysis based on their ecological and economic importance and relative abundance in available surveys: spot Leiostomus xanthurus, pinfish Lagodon rhomboides, southern flounder Paralichthys lethostigma, summer flounder Paralichthys dentatus, Atlantic croaker Micropogonias undulatus, and Atlantic menhaden Brevoortia tyrannus. Cross-correlation analysis was used to examine the relationships between the larval and juvenile abundances within species. Tests of synchrony across species were used to find similarities in recruitment dynamics for species with similar winter shelf-spawning life-history strategies. Positive correlations were found between the larval and juvenile abundances for three of the six selected species (spot, pinfish, and southern flounder). These three species have similar geographic ranges that primarily lie south of Cape Hatteras. There were no significant correlations between the larval and juvenile abundances for the other three species (summer flounder, Atlantic croaker, and Atlantic menhaden); we suggest several factors that could account for the lack of a relationship. Synchrony was found among the three southern species within both the larval and juvenile abundance time series. These results provide support for using larval ingress measures as indices of abundance for these and other species with similar geographic ranges and winter shelf-spawning life-history strategies.

The goal of this research is to identify key features of atmospheric circulation that influence winter climate variability in the Sonoran Desert region. This relationship between winter climate and atmospheric circulation is investigated through the use of indices, which describe the principal features of circulation patterns.

This paper deals with the relation between trawling gear and towing power of the Nigerian inshore fishing trawlers. Information on the size as well as weight variations of the existing otter boards as they relate to the horse power of the engine and length of warps in relation to fishing depth are given

Using data collected simultaneously from a trawl and a hydrophone, we found that temporal and spatial trends in densities of juvenile Atlantic croaker (Micropogonias undulatus) in the Neuse River estuary in North Carolina can be identified by monitoring their sound production. Multivariate analysis of covariance (MA NCOVA) revealed that catch per unit of effort (CPUE) of Atlantic croaker had a significant relationship with the dependent variables of sound level and peak frequency of Atlantic croaker calls. Tests of between-subject correspondence failed to detect relationships between CPUE and either of the call parameters, but statistical power was low. Williamsonâs index of spatial overlap indicated that call detection rate (expressed by a 0â3 calling index) was correlated in time and space with Atlantic croaker CPUE. The correspondence between acoustic parameters and trawl catch rates varied by month and by habitat. In general, the calling index had a higher degree of overlap with this speciesâ density than did the received sound level of their calls. Classification and regression tree analysis identified calling index as the strongest correlate of CPUE. Passive acoustics has the potential to be an inexpensive means of identifying spatial and temporal trends in abundance for soniferous fish species.

Biological/fisheries parameters (L sub(oo) M, F) are presented for four fish species (Gadiculus argenteus; Gaidropsarus mediterraneous; Symphurus ligulatus; Lepidorhombus boscii) as well as body length-weight and length-height relationships for 11 and 12 fish species, respectively, estimated from trawl samples collected using three different cod-ends (stretched mesh size: 14 mm and 20 mm diamond-shaped and 20 mm square-shaped) during 1993-1994, in the western Aegean and North Euboikos Gulf, Greece. The fisheries paramaters, estimated from length-frequency using the ELEFAN approach and software, are discussed in the light of recent information on the selectivity of the presently used trawl cod-end (14 mm diamond shaped)

Shell composition of 35 species of molluscs was studied. The shell, calcium and calcium carbonate contents were lowest in the cuttle bone of cuttlefish, while they were highest in shell of Cypraea ocellata. Solen sp. had higher meat and protein content than the pelecypods and lower meat, water and protein content than the cephalopods. Inverse relationships between water and fat, and protein and ash were established.
