Histamine levels in batches of heavily salted (fish:salt ratio 4:1) herring (Clupea harengus) were monitored during ripening at 4°C and 25°C. The batches studied were prepared from both pre-spawning and post-spawning (spent) fish using new and used salt. Salt levels in the flesh, which reached 11 to 14% (wet weight basis) during the ripening period, were found to retard histamine formation. During normal spoilage of ice chilled fish, histamine levels had been reported to exceed 50mg/100g flesh as it approached the limit of edibility whilst, in the heavily salted fish, levels remained below 20mg/100g flesh throughout the ripening periods of 18 months for the 4°C batches and 3 months for the 25°C batches. This was the case when the samples were set up and the salt allowed penetrating the flesh at 4°C. When, however, the samples were set up and initially stored at ambient (10-15°C) temperature the histamine levels in the flesh rose above 20mg/100g before enough salt had penetrated to inhibit its generation. The gradual rise in levels which, nevertheless, occurred over the ripening periods followed significantly (5% level of significance) different trends, being greater in the batches prepared from pre-spawning than those from spent fish.

Recently there has been much activity in reclaiming the low-lying coastal areas of Dade County for residential use, by the addition of fill. The fill is obtained by digging canals both normal to and parallel to Biscayne Bay. The canals serve the additional purpose of providing an access to the Bay for boats. A problem needing to be considered is the effect that these canals will have on the ground-water resources. It is expected that the canals will have little effect on ground water in parts of the county distant from the coast, but their effect in coastal areas is a matter of concern. In order to predict what, may happen in the vicinity of these new canals if they are not equipped with adequate control structures, it is instructive to review what has happened in the vicinity of similar canals in the past. The U. S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with Dade County, the cities of Miami and Miami Beach, the Central and Southern Florida Flood Control District, and the Florida Geological Survey has collected water-level and salinity data on wells and canals in Dade County since 1939. Some of the agencies named, and others, collected similar data before 1939. Analysis of all the data shows that sea water in the Atlantic Ocean and Biscayne Bayis the sole source of salt-water contamination in the Biscayne aquifer of the Dade County area. Thirty largemouth bass ( Micropterus salmoide s Lacepde) were implanted with radio tags in late October 2003 in two coves of Lake Seminole, Georgia, and tracked over a 24-hour period about every 10 days to determine their response to herbicide application. After five weeks of tracking, hydrilla ( Hydrilla verticillata Royle) in each cove was treated in early December 2003 with dipotassium salt of endothall (Aquathol K; 7-oxabicyclo [2.2.1] heptane-2,3-dicarboxylic acid) at a rate of 3.5 ppm. Largemouth bass were tracked during application and tracking continued for three months post treatment to assess effects of herbicide treatment on activity patterns. The treatment in Desser Cove successfully reduced hydrilla in approximately half the cove. However, the treatment in Peacock Lake completely eliminated all submersed aquatic vegetation (SAV) by April 2004. Movement and activity centers remained similar between treatment periods in Desser Cove, but increased after treatment in Peacock Lake. Depth occupied by telemetered fish decreased after Aquathol K treatment in both coves. In general, behavior of largemouth bass did not change appreciably during treatment, and only minor changes were observed in the posttreatment period in Peacock Lake, where all SAV was eliminated. Fish showed little attraction to or movement away from treatment areas, and fish migration from either cove was nil after treatment. Application of Aquathol K and subsequent reduction of SAV had little effect on largemouth bass behavior or movement. (PDF has 8 pages.)

EXTRACT (SEE PDF FOR FULL ABSTRACT): Evaluations of the impact of climate change (such as a greenhouse effect) upon water resources should represent both the expected change and the uncertainty in that expectation. Since water resources such as streamflow and reservoir levels depend on a variety of factors, each of which is subject to significant uncertainty, it is desirable to formulate methods of representing that uncertainty in the forcing factors and from this determine the uncertainty in the response variables of interest. We report here progress in the representation of the uncertainty in climate upon the uncertainty in the estimated hydrologic response.

Artemia cysts were produced from the traditional solar salt works of Bangladesh through different fertilization treatments were tested for viability and hatching performance in different forms, such as processed and preserved, processed and decapsulated and unprocessed and undecapsulated. Decapsulated cysts performed maximum hatching (86.0%) in 20ppt salinity during 48 hours of incubation. The hatching percentage by the unprocessed and undecapsulated cysts were very low (12.0- 18.7%) in all the tested salinity grades.

Effect of gibbing process on the protein hydrolysis in terms of free alpha amino nitrogen (FAN) content during the ripening of barrel salted herring at low temperature (4°C) was investigated. For this purpose North Sea herring (Clupea harengus) from north-east British coast was salted in polypropylene barrels and allowed to ripen at 4°C. This process of barrel salting was carried out for whole fish in one batch and gibbed fish in another batch. The investigation was performed by using new salt and used salt in separate barrels for each batch of experimental fish. Results of the present study show that protein hydrolysis was significantly higher in the ripened salt-herring produced from whole fish which was found to have more characteristic sensory properties than those produced from gibbed fish. Similar result (proteolysis) was obtained when the investigation was repeated for the spent herring although the spent herring fails to produce a ripened product with the desired characteristic sensory attributes, compared to those of pre-spawning herring.

The paper examines the factor intensity and economic returns of alternate shrimp-crop and shrimp-salt farming in the coastal areas of Bangladesh. Data were collected from 30 shrimp-crop and 30 shrimp-salt farmers, 30 shrimp farmers and 30 rice farmers from three selected coastal districts of Bangladesh. Cobb-Douglas production function model was used to determine the effect of various factors on alternate shrimp-crop farming. The chosen variables were stocking of juveniles, paddy seed, labour, fertilizers, feed and farm size of respective type of farming. The results indicated that the production function exhibited increasing remrns to scale for alternate shrimp-rice, alternate shrimp-salt and year round shrimp farming while it indicated decreasing returns for year round rice farming. Economic analysis of same system of farming indicated that higher amount of input use produced higher level of yield, gross return and net return for each type of production system.

The preventive effect of sucrose and glucose on the denaturation of frozen rohu actomyosin at -20°C for 7 weeks was examined using an in vitro test model. The rate of denaturation was followed by estimating percentage salt extractability, Ca¹²+ ATPase activity and the clearing response test. Sucrose and glucose showed cryoprotective action for all concentration of actomyosin. Higher actomyosin concentration was preserved better than lower concentration. Post-rigor actomyosin was preserved to a greater extent than pre-rigor actomyosin. Correlation between percentage salt extractability and enzyme activity could not be observed in all samples of frozen actomyosin studied.

The preventive effect of fumarate, maleate, tartrate and oxalate on the denaturation of frozen rohu actomyosin at -20°C in 0.7 M KCl for 7 weeks was examined using an in vitro test model. The rate of denaturation was followed by estimating percentage salt extractability, Ca²+ ATP-ase activity and the clearing response test. Fumarate, maleate and tartrate showed cryoprotective effect for higher concentration of pre-rigor rohu actomyosin of 10 mg/ml and 20 mg/ml. At actomyosin concentration of 6 mg/ml, maleate and tartrate showed some preventive effect whereas fumarate enhanced denaturation. Oxalate showed poor cryoprotective action. Post-rigor rohu actomyosin was preserved frozen without denaturation to a greater extent than pre-rigor actomyosin.

The effect of betel leaf (Piper betle Linn.) extract on control of autoxidation of fat in dry fish has been studied. Oil sardine has been selected for experiments since it contains very high amount of fat. The treatments were given with 5% (w/v) betel leaf extract in water at different stages of salt curing. FFA, PV and TVN values of the samples were determined periodically to assess the keeping quality and autoxidation. The sample, prepared by dipping the fish in the extract immediately after salting and then drying as usual, was found to have better keeping qualities.

The effect of washing minced catfish in water, sodium chloride solution (1%) and ascorbic acid solution (0.1%) in improving the quality and frozen shelf-life has been studied. Washing improved the colour and reduced the non-protein nitrogen contents and extractable nitrogen. Denaturation was more in samples washed in salt and ascorbic acid solutions. Rancidity as measured by PV and organoleptic studies showed significant reduction in washed samples. The frozen storage life was significantly enhanced by washing.
