The purpose of this paper is to review selected socio-economic aspects of the Kyoga basin lakes with a view to assessing, the potehtials within the fishing communities for participatory management and poverty eradication. This paper is based on information obtained from three categories of activities. First a review of existing data and reports was undertaken to establish existing knowledge on the subject and identify the gaps.

To detect rainbow trout hatcheries for infectious hematopoietic necrosis virus, samples of kidney, liver, spleen, muscle, intestine, heart and gills of trout larvae were obtained from a number of trout hatcheries from different provinces. Also tissue samples were obtained for molecular works using RT- PCR procedure. Tissue samples were processed using standard histotechnique and the obtained sections were stained using immunohistochemical procedure. From 100 examined samples 35 were positive for IHN by immunohistochemical test. Also, from 100 samples examined, 43 were positive in RT- PCR studies. The obtained results show that some rainbow trout hatcheries are contaminated in different regions of country. Therefore, a definition of prevention and eradication criteria are now critical to protect the unaffected areas within the country.

The report of the proceedings of the New Delhi workshop on the SSF Guidelines (Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-scale Fisheries in the Context of Food Security and Poverty Eradication). The workshop brought together 95 participants from 13 states representing civil society organizations. governments, FAO, and fishworker organizations from both the marine and inland fisheries sectors. This report will be found useful for fishworker organizations, researchers, policy makers, members of civil society and anyone interested in small-scale fisheries, tenure rights, social development, livelihoods, post harvest and trade and disasters and climate change.
