Fishing guidelines

In accordance with the recommendations of the Committee on Fisheries (COFI), FAO prepared the first draft of the technical guidelines in relation to Fishing Operations, which were submitted to the Technical Consultation on the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fishing, Rome, 26 September to 5 October 1994. The draft was prepared taking into account the Declaration of Cancún, Agenda 21 of United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) and the Report of the Expert Consultation on Responsible Fishing Operations, Sidney, British Colombia, Canada, 6 -11 June 1994. Thereafter, the draft was revised taking into account, the negotiations at the UN Conference on Straddling Fish Stocks and Highly Migratory Fish Stocks, the elaboration of the Code as well as developments at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) with regard to the Protocol to the Torremolinos International Convention on Fishing Vessel Safety and the new International Convention on Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Fishing Vessel Personnel, 1995. Technical Guidelines are given in support of the implementation of the Code in relation to fishing operations. These are addressed to States, international organizations, fisheries management bodies, owners, managers and charterers of fishing vessels as well as fishers and their organizations. Wassergehalte tiefgefrorener Kammmuscheln

Kurzfassung Der Handel mit tiefgefrorenen Kammmuscheln (Pectinidae) hat in den letzten Jahren deutlich zugenommen und ist von der Jakobsmuschel (Pecten maximus) auf eine Reihe weiterer Spezies erweitert worden. Neben nicht zutreffender Handelsbezeichnung fällt diese Erzeugnisgruppe immer wieder durch einen erhöhten Wasserzusatz negativ auf. Es wurde die Zusammensetzung des Muskelfleisches von Produkten aus dem deutschen Handel bestimmt und das Wasser zu Protein- Verhältnis (W/P) berechnet. Eine erhebliche Zahl von Proben hatte hohe Wassergehalte und ein W/P Verhältnis > 5. Dies betraf insbesondere die Tiefseescallop (Placopecten magellanicus) und die Japanische Kammmuschel (Mizuhopecten yessoensis). In den meisten Fällen wurden Zusatzstoffe nachgewiesen, obwohl die gesetzlich vorgeschriebene Deklaration fehlte. Abstract The market share of quick-frozen scallops (Pectinidae) has increased significantly in recent years and has been extended besides the king scallop (Pecten maximus) to a variety of other species. Apart from an incorrect labeling this product group stands out for often excessively high water addition. The composition of the muscle meat and the water to protein ratio (W/P) was determined in samples from the German retail. The results showed that a considerable number of samples had very high moisture contents and W/P ratios > 5. These facts were mainly true for Placopecten magellanicus and Mizuhopecten yessoensis. There was no conformity with the prescribed declaration of food additives.

A photographic record of a pre- and post-lake creation event from World War II at Valley, Isle of Anglesey, UK

The article compares a recent aerial photograph of the lowlands of the Isle of Anglesey area with a German surveillance photograph from 1941. The authors aim to infer the environmental changes made to this sand dune and lake system as a direct consequence of constructing the airfield. Part of Tywyn Trewan, the extensive sand dune system, was completely destroyed in order to create runways and the technical and domestic accommodation to house a strategic airfield. As part of the dredging, six new water bodies with a combined surface area of approximately 6 ha were created.
