Aquaculture and capture fisheries in Vietnam have been increasing fast in the last decade, especially aquaculture growth rate is 12% for the 1999 – 2003 period, contributing a significant part into the hunger eradication and poverty reduction1. Vietnam is to be ranked into one of the countries potential to produce the aquatic economic in the world, and the fact is that, after 40 years of establishing, the fisheries sector has made remarkable contributions to the country. By the list, at the moment the aquatic products make up about 4 - 5% of GDP and create job opportunities for over 3 three million employees (VASEP, 2004), in which the largest contribution is from shrimp farming. Bottom trawl surveys were conducted in the southwest monsoon season in 1996 (survey 1) and in the northeast monsoon season in 1996-97 (survey 2) throughout Vietnamese waters. The surveys mainly covered the depth zone 50-200 m but in the northeast monsoon season the depth zone 20-50 m was included in the northern and southern areas. Overall, 273 trawl hauls were conducted. The total biomass for Vietnamese waters in the depth zone 20-200 m was estimated at 700 000 t . Biomass estimates are given for the most abundant species. A relatively higher mean catch-per-unit effort (CPUE) was obtained from survey 2 than from survey 1 and in partcular at depth ranges 50-100 and 100-200 m in south Vietnam. Overall, the dominant families were Monacanthidae (34%), Carangidae (15%), Trichiuridae (9%) and Synodontidae (6%).

This study was conducted to look into the relationship between mouth size and the total length of larval fish, and the growth in total length of larval fish in one or within a one-year period. Study material was gathered in the South China Sea, the Bay of Bangkok and the Vietnamese coast. This translation focuses on methods and conclusions of the original (longer) paper.

As part of a study of genetic variation in the Vietnamese strains of the common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) using direct DNA sequencing of mitochondrial control and ATPase6/8 gene regions, samples from a number of other countries were analyzed for comparison. Results show that the levels of sequence divergence in common carp is low on a global scale, with the Asian carp having the highest diversity while Koi and European carp are invariant. A genealogical analysis supports a close relationship among Vietnamese, Koi, Chinese Color and, to a lesser extent, European carp. Koi carp appear to have originated from a strain of Chinese red carp. There is considerable scope to extend this research through the analysis of additional samples of carp from around the world, especially from China, in order to generate a comprehensive global genealogy of common carp strains.

Along the coastal zone of Nha-Trang, Vietnamese fishermen adopted a special net, Cai ró. This machine (probably coming from China), is used in many countries of Southeast Asia. In Vietnam it is widespread from the north to the south with significant changes. The fixed gear described here is the one generally used in the southern part of Central Vietnam and especially in the province of Nha-Trang.

Since 1949, The Nha Trang Institute of Oceanography has undertaken an inventory of Vietnamese marine fauna with reference to its collection kept in Nha Trang. The collection contains about 250 species of Brachyura. Rare species of particular interest are described in this note.

Fishing with explosives dates back to previous times. It was practiced by few Vietnamese fishermen. The practice is widespread in the country during the last fifteen years due to the increasing availability of explosives. Certainly this method gives some significant advantages: it is easy to apply, inexpensive and promptly profitable. But we cannot underestimate the incalculable damages caused by bursting, disorder and desolation. Some of our fishermen, attracted by immediate gain, accomplished a work of terrible devastation. The following paper does not aim to encourage fishermen to develop and modernize fishing methods but it gives the results of an investigation on dangerous fishing methods.

So far, the assessment of Vietnamese coastal bios has not been thoroughly researched yet. Only two short notes of P. H. Fischer in 1952 on the coast of Indochina and Cap Saint-Jacques (Vungtau) can be cited. This paper gives a summary of work carried out since 1956. The study was conducted using measurements and sketches made on site and after photos.

The main purpose of the Oceanographic Institute of Nhatrang aimed to make an inventory of the marine fauna of Vietnam in order to increase the collection kept at the National Museum. The present note deals with detailed descriptions 32 species of hermit crabs belonging to the family of Paguridae collected on the Vietnamese coasts.
