Stock dynamics of horse mackerel, megalaspis cordyla (Linnaeus) along northwest coast of India

The stock dynamics of horse mackerel, Megalaspis cordyla, along the northwest coast of India has been studied using length frequency data recorded from commercial landings and trawl catches of research-cum-training vessel M.F.V. Saraswati. The growth parameters for this species has been estimated to be L∞=54 cm and K=0.49 per annum. The natural and fishing mortality for the stock have been worked out to be 0.93 and 0.91 per annum respectively. The study indicated that the stock is fished at a safer fishing mortality level F sub(0.1), lower than F sub(msy) level.

Shelf-life of horse mackerel fish balls stored at 0-2°C

The shelf-life of standardized horse mackerel fish balls was assessed by biochemical, microbiological, organoleptic and other spoilage changes at 0-2°C. There was decrease in pH value, moisture and the organoleptic scores. Expressible water percentage, TMA-N, TVB-N and peroxide value showed increasing trends. Total plate count also increased gradually during storage. Water separation in the treated sample was observed after 12 days and slimy consistency was noticed in the control sample on the 24th day. Based on these observations, it can be concluded that fish balls can be stored at 0-2°C for 20 days.

For a number of stocks ICES recommends a reduction in fishing mortality. Moreover, ICES recommends for many stocks to establish recovery and management plans, to safe guarda continuous development of the stocks towards safe biological limits.

This paper summarises the current knowledge on horse mackerel (Trachurus trachurus) biology. The synopsis is mainly based on the report of a recently conducted EU funded workshop on horse mackerel age reading. A brief description of this workshop and of recent developments in sampling of German commercial horse mackerel catches is given.

The fishery ministers of the EU agreed in their yearly pre-Christmas marathon session on 18th and 19th Dec. 1997 on next year’s TACs and country quota. Main decision was the increase of the TAC for North sea cod and a smaller than feared cut of cod TACs in the West of Scotland zone, the Irish Sea and the English Channel. For the first time ministers set country quota for horse mackerel; until 1997 there had been - with the exception for Portugal and Spain - only a common quota. Also for the much disputed sandeel fishery a TAC of 1 mio. t was finally established, as well as for bluefin tuna and swordfish in the Atlantic and Mediterranean. For 1998 the EU member countries dispose of a total catch quota of 4.46 mio. t in EU waters, and together with quota in third country waters of 5.2 mio. t. Of this total quota, 3.16 mio. t are fish for human consumption and 2.1 mio. t fish for industrial purposes.

The question has not yet been completely solved whether or not the mackerel and horse mackerel stocks in the waters from the Bay of Biscay to the Atlantic off the Norwegian coast are independent unit stocks or must be regarded rather as one stock with distinct stock components. The stock definition, however, is the basis for fishery management and is fundamental for the exploitation of the stocks. For this reason the extensive mackerel and horse mackerel egg survey carried out in 1998, is of high importance and significance for the fishery management of the two species. The survey has begun in January in Iberian waters and will eventually end in the autumn north of Scotland. To cope with this task research vessels of eight European nations are participating.

Deutscher Beitrag zum internationalen Makrelen(Scomber scombrus) und Stöcker- (Trachurus trachurus) Eier-Survey

Based on the results from egg and larvae surveys, mackerel and horse mackerel are thought to form three more or less distinct stocks each in the North Sea and in the waters west of the British Isles. These are firstly the southern stocks in the southern part of the English Channel, Celtic Sea and Bay of Biscay, secondly the North Sea and finally the western stocks of both species, loeated between the Shetlands and southern Norway. It is argued here that in view of the high mobility and the extended seasonal migrations of both species a c1ear separation of the stocks can hardly be maintained. In this context the results of the 1995 mackerel and horse mackerel egg survey to the southern spawning location is presented.

Makrelen- und Holzmakrelenfänge stimmen zuversichtlich

In order to determine the abundance of incoming year classes of both mackerel and horse mackerel a couple of research vessels in the frame of ICES investigats waters west of the British Isles, the Gulf of Biscay and areas west of the Iberian Peninsula in the first half of each third year. In 1995, Germany took place in these investigations with R.V. "Walther Herwig III" from March 23 to April 18. A total of 100 plankton stations were made using a Gulf - III - Sampier between Fastnet Rock and the Gironde estuary. In addition, 87 fishing stations were occupied by a GOV net. Though fish indications were not fished on purpose large amounts of especially horse mackerel and mackerel were gained in the half hour tows. Besides, boarfish (Capros aper L.), blue whiting, and sprat were found in considerable quantities and numbers in some areas. The hydrographc situation was as expected: The development of a surfaee thermocline created by radiation indieates the collapse of the vertically homogeneous situation of the winter period.

Perspektiven für den Schwarmfischfang in den Gewässern westlich der Britischen Inseln und der Biskaya

FRV "Walther Herwig" participated in a survey internationally coordinated by ICES in waters west of the British Isles and the Gulf of Biscay from February 14 to March 5. Results are given especially on mackerel and horse mackerel from the Hebrides area, west of Ireland, Great and Littie Sole Bank, and Eddystone.

Standardisation des efforts de pêche des chalutiers ivoiriens et estimation de l'abondance relative dans les divers secteurs

The method developed by Robson (1966) is used to standardize fishing effort of Côte d'Ivoire trawlers whose size and power are very different. This method also allows the estimation of the relative abundances in the different fishing areas. The results obtained using 10 years data show that the entire Ivorian continental shelf can be considered as a single fishery unit. The relative fishing power of vessels is well correlated with gross tonnage, brake horse power and length of the vessel. The obsolescence of the trawlers affects their fishing power.

Comparative growth performance of jack mackerels of the genus Trachurus with emphasis on T. symmetricus murphyi in Chile

This contribution presents von Bertalanffy growth parameter estimates for species/stocks of jack mackerels of the genus Trachurus from around the world, and compares them with growth parameters for T. symmetricus murphyi caught off central-Chile (33 super(o)S-39 super(o)S). It is found that Trachurus stocks inhabiting upwelling areas such as the Humboldt and Benguela current systems grow better than their ecological equivalents in temperate waters, such as the North Sea. The von Bertalanffy growth paramters estimated from Chilean horse mackerel are: FL = 65.2 cm (TL = 71.6 cm) and K = 0.138 year super(-1).
