The general circulation pattern in the western boundary of the SW Atlantic is dominated by the opposite flows of Malvinas (-Falkland)and Brazil Current. In the Confluence region both currents separate from the continental slope and flow offshore creating an area of strong contracts and complex dynamics. The shelf-break fronts off Argentina mark the transition between shelf waters of mixed origin and nutrient rich Malvinas waters. Two areas deserve special attention due to the steep gradients introduced by the outflow of important sources of continental waters: the Rio de la Plata and the Magellan Strait to the north and south of the study area. Characteristics of the front is the high primary and secondary production, and the presence of important invertebrate and fish stocks that concentrate along the front to feed or spawn. The area comprises nearly 30 o/o (333 million U$S in 1995)of all Argentine catches of fish and squid. Resources in the area, beyond the EEZ limits, support international fisheries mainly of Russia, Poland and Spain. (Document contains 15 pages & figs)

One third of the people on earth who are described as living in absolute poverty are found today in India. “These people,” says Mr B K Satpathy, “are caught in a poverty trap’.” “Poverty trap?” we ask. “These are creative weavers; their cloth has a distinctive style, but those who supply their thread also take away and sell the cloth, paying just a small labor cost for each saree. If they are skilled and work hard this amounts to only 25-30 rupees (60-70 US cents) per day.” Under this arrangement, weaving does not provide enough to live on, and people are seeking ways to escape their entrapment in poverty. This paper presents a resume of the work carried on the production of 10 million major carp fry by stocking at the rate of 10 million spawn per hectare in 38 nursery ponds covering 2.1 ha. water spread area at Khutelabhata fish seed farm, Durg, Madhya Pradesh. Observations made on the effect of various types of feed on survival and growth rate of Indian Major carp fry in nurseries are reported. Physico-chemical parameters and plankton populations in the three sets of nurseries are given. The experiments indicates that optimum survival rate of fry can be obtained by feeding tender spawn with animal protein feed. The economic viability of the experiment discussed shows that for a little increase in the expenditure on improved artificial food the survival and growth of fry can be enhanced.
