This volume summarizes the results of three workshops organized by the PICES-GLOBEC Climate Change and Carrying Capacity Program that were held just prior to the PICES Seventh Annual Meeting in Fairbanks, Alaska, in October 1998. These workshops represent the efforts of the REX, MODEL, and MONITOR Task Teams to integrate the results of national GLOBEC and GLOBEC-like programs to arrive at a better understanding of the ways in which climate change affects North Pacific ecosystems. The objective of this study is to describe the present statu s of the coarse fish populations of the River Avon, Hampshire. The study arose from a widespread concern among anglers and riparian owners that fish numbers had decreased since the early 1970's, and from a scarcity of accurate information on population densities on which to assess this complaint. It was realised at the outset that, without such information from earlier years, the survey would not reveal the extent of any decline in the fisheries. The result s of the survey are compared with available data from other rivers , chiefly the nearby R. Frome and R. Stour. They may be used to assess any futur e changes in population densities and growth rates, and to indicate promising areas for future research. The data were collected from a quantitative survey of twelve river sections along the fifty kilometres of river between Salisbury and Sopley, and a qualitative survey of three weir pools within the same area from 14 September to 9 October, 1987.
Evaluation of the contribution of fisheries and aquaculture to food security in developing countries

Fish contain important nutrients such as essential fatty acids, iron, zinc, calcium, vitamin A and vitamin C. Production of freshwater fish depends on the strategic application of various management techniques. The demand for fish products has increased beyond the natural supply, resulting in a high pressure on fisheries. Development of aquaculture is necessary for a rapid growth in fish production. A number of constraints hamper the development of aquaculture. Introduction of polyculture technologies in some countries is a way of maximizing production from different levels of the food chain. The roles of women in making fish products available to consumers is frequently over-looked by policy makers. Gender equity in policy-making and management of fisheries and in capacity building is an important issue. Fish production from inland waters and coastal areas can be increased by adopting cage and pen culture systems. Input subsidies and loans to resource poor farmers can boost fish production.

Parameters and related statistics of the length-weight relationship of the form W=aL super(b) are presented for 72 species of fish caught in the area of the Itaipu Reservoir in Parana, Brazil. The b values varied between 2.34 and 3.35, with the mean b=2.986 (s.d.=0.230) not significantly different from 3.0 (df=7, p=0.05).

The article is a summary of the preliminary results of an AFSSRN-funded study on Risk Programming of Rice-Fish Production Systems in the Philippines conducted early 1993 by the AFSSRN-CLSU team. The results show that rice-fish culture leads to a higher rice production compared to rice monoculture.

Oreochromis niloticus was subjected to transportation stress to investigate hepatic glycogen levels and mortality as indices of stress. Mortalities lasted up to three days after transportation, except in highly aerated samples. Heptic glycogen levels in transported fish were significantly lower in the controls. Stress appeared to be more intense when fish were transported at a high density and in a high salinity medium.

The success of induced spawning for the production of fish seed depends on many factors which affect hatchery conditions. This paper discusses the results of an investigation on the effects of six different levels of salinity on the fertilization and hatching of Heterobranchus bidorsalis eggs. The results indicate that spermatozoa of H. bidorsalis can survive under a wide range of saline concentrations, with survival increasing with an increase in salinity from 0 to 0.4% and then decreasing as the level of salinity increases. Survival was optimum of 0.4% saline concentration.

Four Oreochromis species were used in the study. Progenies from the 27 cross combinations (5 pure breds and 22 crossbreds) were evaluated in 10 environments with different salinity levels and agro-climatic conditions using communal rearing concept. Among the different cross combinations reared across environments, O. aureus x O. spilurus gave the highest body weight and O. mossambicus x O. spilurus, the highest survival rate. Positive percent mean heterosis were observed in the crosses between O. mossambicus x O. niloticus, FAC selected line and O. aureus x O. spilurus.
