A cruise aboard the vessel Cassiopeia was held from 14 to 22 November 2000. The objective to map the fishing areas, to study the variation of the catch, income, specific composition and length on wishbone Polysteganus coeruleopunctatus (cachucho) in relation to fishing areas, depth and immersion time of the fish pots. The total capture registered was 4.350,00 Kg for 1600 fish pots and 32 effectuated throws. The highest capture per throw was registered in the interval of depth between the 140 to 180 meters. Regarding the time of immersion, the better captures were obtained in the interval between 25 and 30 hours. The profits during this cross were for fish-trap (2, 71 kg), per throw 135,00 Kg and for immersion hour 6,07 kg. P. coeruleopunctatus (cachucho) was more abundant in number in Quissico, while in Zavora it was abundant in number and also in weight. Likewise, the cachucho was more abundant in number and weight in the captures of the fish pots submerged less than 24 hours, 100-140 meters depth. Cachucho catch under 100 meters depth was quite reduced (less than 1 %). The middle length of the cachucho captured during the cross was 275,7 mm. There were significant differences in the lengths of the cachucho accordingly to depth or fishing area. The smallest individual (fish) was captured by fish pots that were submerged more than 24 hours. The principal recommendations of the study refer to maintenance of the current fishing effort with regard to the number of fish pots, and explore the fishing areas on a rotating basis, to avoid the local effort, currently high.

Although it is known enough of the biology of shallow+ waters shrimps, knowledge of the deep-waters shrimp is still limited. This is due to the fact that: these resources are relatively new and the study of deep waters species is more difficult and expensive. Some biological informations on the main species of shrimp in depth of Mozambique have been collected during investigation cruises (Sports et al., Pacule, 1987) and through sampling carried out on board commercial vessels (DDR fleet) between 1983 and 1986.

The species Palinurus delagoae is distributed at 17 00' S of latitude, at a depth greater than 200 meters. However the main area with a fishing intensity station is located at 2200'S of latitude from 200 and 400 meters. The fishing of these resources is made with cages and trawling nets.

Reports of cruises carried out off Mozambique between parallels 21 degree 00 and 26 degree 20'S and at depths of 400 and 800 meters including abundance indices, catch composition, geographic and bathymetric distributions of shrimp catches are presented. The main species found were Hymenopenaeus triarthrus and Aristeomorpha foliacea which represent 64 to 72% of total catches.

The deep-water shrimp were already studied many years ago, but their commercial fishing on large scale, only developed from the seventies. Two Luso-U.S. fishing companies (1966), and a Luso-South African company (1963- 1968), dedicated to the fishing of deep-water crustaceans, including Haliporoides triarthrus species (Arajo, 1973). Also Champion (1973) described commercial catches of Plesiopenaeus edwardsianus, Aristaeomorpha foliacea and Haliporoides triarthrus in the waters of Mozambique. The first Spanish vessels began fishing activity in 1968 (Freitas and Arajo, 1973) but all of these companies captured mainly penaideos on the continental shelf.
