The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the aquatic environmental fate of triclopyr and its major metabolites, TCP and TMP. This review is primarily based on results of laboratory and field studies conducted by various Federal Agencies and the registrant to support the US aquatic registration for triclopyr TEA.

The present study was designed to examine the following: (1) the taxonomic. spatial, and temporal patterns of availability of all invertebrate species associated with Macrocystis (excluding protozoans and nematodes); (2) the utilization of this invertebrate assemblage as food by kelp forest fishes within the Macrocystis "foliage- searching" feeding guild, as well as proximal mechanisms leading to observed patterns of resource partitioning; and (3) the dynamic relationship between availability and utilization of this food resource. The approach was largely descriptive. with observations collected during a 19-month period from June 1975 to December 1976. Chapter I is an investigation of the resource utilization patterns of four species of kelp forest fishes with respect to food-related resource dimensions. and tests aspects of current theory involving inter- and intraspecific competition. Chapter II is a detailed examination of the invertebrate assemblage associated with Macrocystis and presents life histories of the fishes examined during this study. Lake Chad fisheries contributes about 13% of all fish produced by the inland and coastal states of the nation and supports a large population of fishermen and allied workers. The species of freshwater fish produced from the Lake such as Gymnarchus, Clarias and Heterotis are very popular with the fish consumers in Nigeria; hence Lake Chad processed fish is transported long distances to southern Nigerian markets. Lake Chad thus contributes significantly to the provision of fish protein and to the Green Revolution Programme

Nypa fruticans occurs in Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River State, Nigeria; invading an estimated area of 821 Km super(2) mangrove dominated swamps. Human activities such as tree felling, urbanization, oil and gas exploration and exploitation and other activities led to the interference in the normal mangrove by the Nypa palm. Lack of utilization by the local population of the Nypa palm as in into-pacification has increased the population over the years. The effect includes the reduction in primary and secondary productivity, disruption of food chain and erosion of riverbanks. The eradication of the Nypa palm from the Niger delta mangrove ecosystem and replacement with red and white mangroves will restore the ecosystem health and enhance biological diversity

The physico-chemical parameters of the surface water of Shiroro Lake and its major tributaries at their entry point to the reservoir were assessed over a period of eighteen months. As in other African inland water bodies there were seasonal variations in the parameters measured. The hydrological regime of the lake, precipitation chemistry, bedrock chemistry and hydro-electric power generation influence and determine the inputs of dissolved organic carbon, nutrient levels and water quality of the lake. The added nutrients to the lake by means of the major tributary rivers and inundation of surrounding areas also influence the water quality of the lake. The wet season mean values for water and air temperature were significantly (P <0.05) higher than dry season mean values in all stations. However, for pH, Dissolved oxygen and Phosphate-phosphorus the dry season mean values were higher than wet season mean values

Aquaculture drive in the Niger Delta has necessitated the springing up of various forms of hatcheries in Nigeria in the area. The hatchery level is high as most fish farmers now want to produce their own fingerlings for the stocking of their production ponds for culture to market (table) size. The paper shows that there is a lot of market in the Niger-Delta for fresh fish. Majority of the numerous fish farmers are not well empowered to breed and produce fish seeds especially species most loved and eaten. The rising cost of materials in the Nigerian economy has become a bottleneck in the construction of more fish hatcheries for fingerling production. However, the assistance of multinationals has become very necessary to enhance its feasibility to encourage better involvement in the fish hatchery works. One remarkable area where assistance is being felt by the communities in the Niger-Delta is in fish farming and more so in the supply of fish fingerling to top fish farmers by The Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited (SPDC), a multinational oil company in the area. Few fish farmers have benefited from this. If more hatcheries are available to service and provide the needed fingerlings to stock the available water bodies such as, home backyard ponds, the 0.74 million hectares of brackish water, 1.01 million hectares of perennial swamps, and other marginal land available for aquaculture and properly managed, it will yield between 2.5 and 10 metric tones of fish depending on the species stocked and bred

The bulk of the European Community's water policy legislation was developed between the mid 1970s and the early 1990s. These directives addressed specific substances, sources, uses or processes but caused problems with differing methods definitions and aims. The Water Framework Directive (WFD) aims to resolve the piecemeal approach. The Environemnt Agency (EA) welcomes and supported the overall objective of establishing a coherent legislative framework. The EA has been discussing the implications of the WFD with European partners and has developed a timetable for the implementation and a special team will commission necessary research.

Abstract Growth and condition of fish are functions of available food and environmental conditions. This led to the idea of using fish as a “consumption sensor” for the measurement of food intake over a defined period of time. A bio-physical model for the estimation of food consumption was developed based on the von Bertalanffy model. Whereas some of the input variables of the model, the initial and final lengths and masses of a fish and the temperature within the time period considered can easily be measured, internal characteristics of the species have to be determined indirectly. Three internal parameters are used in the model: the maintenance consumption at 0°C, the temperature dependence of this consumption and the food efficiency, the percentage of the ingested food utilized. Estimates of the parameters for a given species can be determined by feeding experiments. Here, data from published feeding experiments on juvenile cod, Gadus morhua L., were used to validate the model. The average of the relative error for the food intake predicted by the model for individual fish was about 24 %, indicating that fish used the food with different efficiencies. However, grouping the fish according to size classes and temperature lowered the relative error of the predicted food intake for the group to typically 5 %. For a group containing all fish of the feeding experiment the relative prediction error was about 2 %.
