Ictiólogos de la Argentina: Oscar Horacio Padin

This series will include all those people who, by means of their contributions, great and small, played a part in the consolidation of ichthyology in Argentina. The general plan of this work consists of individual factsheets containing a list of works by each author, along with reference bibliography and, whenever possible, personal pictures and additional material. The datasheets will be published primarily in chronological order, although this is subject to change by the availability of materials for successive editions. This work represents another approach for the recovery and revalorization of those who set the foundations of Argentine ichthyology while in diverse historical circumstances. I expect this to be the beginning of a major work that achieves the description of such a significant part of the history of natural sciences in Argentina.

A través de esta serie intentaremos conocer diferentes facetas personales de los integrantes de nuestra “comunidad”. El cuestionario, además de su principal objetivo, con sus respuestas quizás nos ayude a encontrar entre nosotros puntos en común que vayan más allá de nuestros temas de trabajo y sea un aporte a futuros estudios históricos. Esperamos que esta iniciativa pueda ser otro nexo entre los ictiólogos de la región, ya que consideramos que el resultado general trascendería nuestras fronteras.

Peces continentales de la Argentina: Iconografía. Lepidosiren paradoza.

Spanish: Este trabajo tiene como objetivo la recopilación de dibujos y diferentes figuras de las especies presentes en nuestro territorio. Para ello, hemos utilizado como principales fuentes de información la obra de Ringuelet et al. (1967), Reis et al. (2003), López et al. (2003; 2006) y las bases de datos on-line de W. N. Eschmeyer y Fish Base. El tratamiento incluye una ficha individual con imágenes seleccionadas de la especie tratada y las que eventualmente hayan surgido por trabajos de índole anatómica. Se adjuntan las referencias de los trabajos utilizados en la confección de cada ficha. Esta es una publicación abierta, por lo que requerirá de actualización permanente, para lo cual sería necesario se sume a nuestra tarea la buena voluntad y colaboración de la comunidad ictiológica. Los compiladores entendemos que esta contribución, además de aportar valiosa información, rescata el trabajo de mujeres y hombres que son parte de la rica historia de la ictiología nacional y regional. English: The goal of this work is to present a collection of drawings and figures depicting the species present in our country. To achieve this, our main sources of information have been the works of Ringuelet et al. (1967), Reis et al. (2003), and López et al. (2003; 2006), as well as the online databases of W. N. Eschmeyer and Fish Base. Each species has an individual factsheet with selected images, including some from anatomical research works. All the works referenced are mentioned in each factsheet. This is an open-ended publication. As such, it will require permanent updating, which will depend on the good will and collaboration of the ichthyological community. As compilers, we understand that this contribution not only provides valuable information, but also highlights the work of men and women who are part of the rich history of our national and regional ichthyology. Espanol: Este trabajo tiene como objetivo la recopilación de la información existente sobre las especies presentes en nuestro territorio. Para ello, se elaboraron fichas que contienen las referencias argentinas y de aquellas revisiones de autores extranjeros que involucran taxas de nuestro país. Como principales fuentes de información se consultaron Ringuelet et al. (1967), CLOFFSCA (2003), López et al. (2003; 2006), Liotta (2006) y las bases de datos on-line de W. N. Eschmeyer y Fish Base. Esta es una publicación abierta, por lo que requerirá de actualización permanente, para lo cual sería necesario se sume a nuestra tarea la buena voluntad y colaboración de la comunidad ictiológica. Esperamos con este aporte colaborar en la construcción de una base de datos de los peces continentales de la Argentina. La concreción de esta herramienta dará soporte a los planes generados desde los diferentes sectores involucrados en el tema, además de fomentar la difusión de la disciplina y la reafirmación de los derechos soberanos sobre nuestros recursos naturales. La cuenca del Salado: uso y posibilidades de sus recursos pesqueros.

The fishing resources of the Salado Basin are extraordinary important in the context of the inland waters of Argentina. However, the diversity of landscapes in the basin and the lack of continuity in the regional planning , have made difficult a proper management of the fishing resources. This paper has a general overview of the main aspects related to the fishing fauna of the region, with a natural point of view of the processes and mechanisms of the management. A description of the fishes basin community and the identification of the species with commercial and game interests is included . We describe the different fishing gears used in the province for game, commercial and scientific fishing. We review the criteria of diagnosis of the silver side population as a main resource of fishing interest and under this point of view we propose new outlooks to promote a proper management of the resources and its sustainable use. We identify the different kinds of fisheries that are common in the basin and we make a survey of the related socioeconomic aspects. Moreover, we analyze the development of a new institutional and regulatory frame in order to optimize the management of the fishing resources. Finally, we define criteria for ordering and conserving such resources and identify conflict points and requirements for its sustainable use in the context of new proposals for the public policies.

Biology and fisheries of swordfish, Xiphias gladius: Papers from the International Symposium on Pacific Swordfish, Ensenada, Mexico, 11-14 December 1994

The swordfish, Xiphias gladius, is a large migratory oceanic species. It is widely distributed in tropical, temperate, and sometimes cold waters of all oceans, and is usually found in areas with sea-surface temperatures above 13°C. It can reach a maximum size of 540 kg, and is a favorite food fish in many countries. It is excellent for steaks, canning, or teriyaki, the Japanese dish of meat grilled with sugar, soy sauce, and rice wine. Swordfish is harvested commercially throughout its distribution, in both coastal and high-seas fisheries. Sport fisheries for swordfish are very small compared to those for other billfishes, accounting for no more than a few hundred fish per year. (PDF file contains 284 pages.)

Biología pesquera de las lagunas Encadenadas del Sudoeste, provincia de Buenos Aires.

El objetivo es definir las variables biológicas del pejerrey (Odonthesthes bonariensis)de las lagunas del sistema para detectar el posible impacto de las obras hidraúlicas proyectadas en la región y evaluar las características de transición del área estudiada desde el punto de vista de la composición ictiofaunística. El presente artículo es una reedición del generado por el Departamento Científico Zoología Vertebrados (actual División Zoología Vertebrados), FCNyM, UNLP, en noviembre de 1993. El anexo 7.1-Fotografías fue omitido debido a la mala calidad de las imágenes.

Lista de los peces continentales de la provincia de Tierra del Fuego, Antartida e Islas del Atlantico Sur

Esta serie tiene como finalidad dar a conocer las especies presentes en los diferentes estados provinciales.

Lista de los peces de la provincia de Catamarca

Esta serie tiene como finalidad dar a conocer las especies presentes en los diferentes estados provinciales. Tomando como base los trabajos de López et al., (2003); Reis et al., (2003); Liotta (2006) y Ferraris (2007) actualizamos el elenco ictiofaunístico de cada territorio provincial. No se realizan, con excepción del nombre vulgar y localidad tipo, comentarios y/o observaciones de las especies señaladas ya que estos se encuentran en la bibliografía adjunta. Se incluyen dos tablas que contienen información sobre especies introducidas y de aquellas de presencia dudosa o que requieran confirmación en el territorio provincial. Para éstas últimas se cita el trabajo que las menciona por vez primera. Consideramos que este modesto aporte contribuirá a precisar el conocimiento ictiofaunístico regional ya que además de la lista de especies, presentamos el marco biogeográfico e hídrico correspondiente. Por otra parte entendemos que la participación de autores involucrados en la región considerada, le da un verdadero sentido federal a esta contribución, además de reforzar vínculos en los protagonistas de nuestra especialidad. En este nuevo número presentamos la provincia de Catamarca que se encuentra enclavada en el centro-oeste de nuestro territorio, limitada por Salta, Tucumán, Santiago del Estero, Córdoba y La Rioja. Uno de los grupos mas representativos del sistema hidrográfico de Catamarca es el de los Trichomycteridae (López, 1992). Esta familia es un ejemplo de alta diversificación en áreas restringidas. Presentan una extensa distribución latitudinal y altitudinal, algunas especies viviendo en el Altiplano boliviano, a más de 4000 m s.n.m., y otras en ambientes de llanura. Las especies de esta familia poseen alta sensibilidad a cualquier alteración del medio en que viven. Por ello, los cambios que se pudieran producir en su hábitat provocarían efectos directos sobre sus poblaciones (López et al., 1996; Monasterio de Gonzo et al., 2011). Podemos afirmar que el conocimiento de la ictiofauna de la provincia de Catamarca comienza a tomar forma a partir de fines del siglo XX ya que se produce un incremento en los relevamientos de su red hidrográfica, dando como resultado una ampliación del número de especies presentes en su territorio, sumándose desde el trabajo de Berg (1895), 24 especies de las cuales 5 son endémicas.
