Effects of natural gas pipeline condensate and crude oil spills, and comments on remediation, with emphasis on south Louisiana salt marshes: a review

This report reviews some of the natural ecological processes at work within a salt marsh as they relate to a spill of natural gas condensate - a mixture of aliphatic hydrocarbons, n-hexane, benzene, toluene, and xylene. It also reviews the environmental impacts of some of the components of natural gas condensate as well as related compounds (crude oil, higher molecular weight hydrocarbons, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarons - PAHs, linear alkyl-benzenes - LABs, etc.) on salt marsh ecosystems in southern Louisiana and elsewhere in the world. The behavior and persistence of these compounds once they have entered the environment is also considered.

From the beginning of the oil and gas exploration in the North Sea the impact of offshore installations, especially pipelines, on the fishery has been thoroughly discussed and investigated. Since fishing activities in the vicinity of pipelines are not prohibited, special precautions have to be taken to prevent towed fishing gear from being fouled by a pipeline. Until now all recommendations for the installation of pipelines are based on the results of tests with trawls crossing one pipeline. New problems will arise if parallel pipelines are installed as planned in the near future.

The rediscovery of the Cladoceran Eurycercus glacialis Lilljeborg, 1887 (Branchiopoda, Chydoridae) in Scotland

The author describes an investigation, the primary aims of which were to locate accurately and assess the ecological status of two Eurycercus glacialis populations in Scotland. A 1957 record of the species did not give a precise location, and on publication of a preliminary report on the location, the possibility of a second location was suggested. In April and May 1988, 16 waterbodies were sampled near Tain, in Scotland, as a result of which the dune waterbodies at Morrich More have now been positively identified as the only known location of E. glacialis in mainland Britain. A second population was found on Shetland. As the mainland site is under considerable developmental pressure from oil pipeline construction, the importance of determining the extent of the distribution on Shetland is highlighted.

Lune, Wyre & Furness Fisheries Advisory Committee 20th October, 1975.

This is the report from the Lune, Wyre and Furness Fisheries Advisory Committee meeting, which was held on the 20th October 1975. North Cumbria Fisheries Advisory Committee 24th June, 1980

This is the report from the North Cumbria Fisheries Advisory Committee meeting, which was held on the 24th June, 1980. It includes the report by the area fisheries officer on fisheries activities which comments on river conditions and fishing, migratory fish movements, and an update on Holmwrangle Hatchery. The report also includes fish mortalities, fish diseases, management work, poaching, the pipeline project with the British Gas Corporation and the plotting of the 'Alter Stone' on the Solway Estuary to assist the bailiffs in identifying the charter area boundary. This is the report from the Lune, Wyre and Furness Fisheries Advisory Committee meeting, which was held on the 30th June, 1980. It includes the report by the area fisheries officer on fisheries activities which comments on river conditions and fishing for salmon, sea trout and brown trout, and the recorded numbers of fish which passed through Duddon Hall, Haverthwaite, Halton, Broadraine and Basinghyll fish counters. Distribution and abundance of Dungeness crab and crangon shrimp, and dredging-related mortality of invertebrates and fish in Grays Harbor, Washington

The impacts of widening and deepening the existing navigation channel in Grays Harbor on Dungeness crab, crangon shrimp and fish was investigated. The spatial and temporal distribution of these organisms was studied using an otter trawl and ring nets, and the uptake of organisms by dredges was estimated from samples collected on working hopper and pipeline dredges. ... Impacts of the dredging project on crabs, shrimp and fish could be associated with entrainment, food loss and toxicants released from sediments. Scenarios are presented that predict impacts. Suggestions for reducing impacts are given.
