From the mid-1950's to the mid-1960's a series of quantitative surveys of the macrobenthic invertebrate fauna were conducted in the offshore New England region (Maine to Long Island, New York). The surveys were designed to 1) obtain measures of macrobenthic standing crop expressed in terms of density and biomass; 2) determine the taxonomic composition of the fauna (ca. 567 species); 3) map the general features of macrobenthic distribution; and 4) evaluate the fauna's relationships to water depth, bottom type, temperature range, and sediment organic carbon content. A total of 1,076 samples, ranging from 3 to 3,974 m in depth, were obtained and analyzed. The aggregate macrobenthic fauna consists of 44 major taxonomic groups (phyla, classes, orders). A striking fact is that only five of those groups (belonging to four phyla) account for over 80% of both total biomass and number of individuals of the macrobenthos. The five dominant groups are Bivalvia, Annelida, Amphipoda, Echninoidea, and Holothuroidea. Other salient features pertaining to the macrobenthos of the region are the following: substantial differences in quantity exist among different geographic subareas within the region, but with a general trend that both density and biomass increase from northeast to southwest; both density and biomass decrease with increasing depth; the composition of the bottom sediments significantly influences both the kind and quantity of macrobenthic invertebrates, the largest quantities of both measures of abundance occurring in the coarser grained sediments and diminishing with decreasing particle size; areas with marked seasonal changes in water temperature support an abundant and diverse fauna, whereas a uniform temperature regime is associated with a sparse, less diverse fauna; and no detectable trends are evident in the quantitative composition of the macrobenthos in relation to sediment organic carbon content. The chemical composition of Azolla africana and Spirodela polyrrhiza cultivated in earthen ponds were determined. Crude protein contents of the samples were 28.9~c0.6 and 25.6~c0.2% dry matter for A. africana and S. polyrrhiza respectively. Dry matter, crude fibre and lipid contents of A. africana were higher (P<0.05) than values obtained for S. polyrrhiza. Mineral analyses showed that S. polyrrhiza contained higher levels of Na, S, Ca, Mg and Fe than A. africana. Except for Ca content in S. polyrrhiza, heavy metals (Ni and Zn) accumulation in Azolla were very high. There were no wide differences in the individual amino acid indexes except for methionine. Some anti-nutritional factors were determined. Cyanide, tannin and phytin contents of fresh weed samples were higher than sun-dried samples. A. africana contained more cyanide and tannin than S. polyrrhiza both in fresh and sun-dried forms

File fish, Monacanthus cirrhifer, juveniles with initial mean body weight of 0.27g were fed purified diets with or without calcium (Ca) supplement for 10 weeks at a water temperature of 27.0±1.4°C. Growth was significantly low in fish fed diet without Ca supplement than fish fed diet with Ca supplement. Feed efficiency and condition of fish were also significantly decreased in absence of a dietary Ca supplementation, Minerals contents of bone were similar in both the treatment groups and did not appear as a suitable indicator of Ca requirement. It appeared that Ca supplement to the purified diet is necessary for file fish for their proper growth and feed utilization.

The elemental composition of otoliths may provide valuable information for establishing connectivity between fish nursery grounds and adult fish populations. Concentrations of Rb, Mg, Ca, Mn, Sr, Na, K, Sr, Pb, and Ba were determined by using solution-based inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry in otoliths of young-of-the year tautog (Tautoga onitis) captured in nursery areas along the Rhode Island coast during two consecutive years. Stable oxygen (δ18O) and carbon (δ13C) isotopic ratios in young-of-the year otoliths were also analyzed with isotope ratio mass spectrometry. Chemical signatures differed significantly among the distinct nurseries within Narragansett Bay and the coastal ponds across years. Significant differences were also observed within nurseries from year to year. Classification accuracy to each of the five tautog nursery areas ranged from 85% to 92% across years. Because accurate classification of juvenile tautog nursery sites was achieved, otolith chemistry can potentially be used as a natural habitat tag.
