Biological Survey of the Panama Canal Zone (1911)

With the cooperation of several of the executive departments, and of the Field Museum of Natural History, a party of about 10 naturalists was accordingly sent to the zone, and the results so far accomplished have been very satisfactory. Large collections of biological material have been received, including specimens of a considerable number of genera and species new to science. It also seemed important to determine exactly the geographical distribution of the various organisms inhabiting the Isthmus, which is one of the routes by which the animals and plants of South America have entered North America and vice versa. Ictiólogos de la Argentina: Camilo Antonio Daneri

This series will include all those people who, by means of their contributions, great and small, played a part in the consolidation of ichthyology in Argentina. The general plan of this work consists of individual factsheets containing a list of works by each author, along with reference bibliography and, whenever possible, personal pictures and additional material. The datasheets will be published primarily in chronological order, although this is subject to change by the availability of materials for successive editions. This work represents another approach for the recovery and revalorization of those who set the foundations of Argentine ichthyology while in diverse historical circumstances. I expect this to be the beginning of a major work that achieves the description of such a significant part of the history of natural sciences in Argentina.

Semblanzas Ictiológicas Iberoamericanas: Antonio José Machado-Allison

A través de esta nueva serie tratamos de conocer diferentes aspectos personales de los integrantes de la comunidad ictiológica iberoamericana. Esta iniciativa, comparte el espíritu y objetivo de las semblanzas nacionales buscando informalmente, otro punto de unión en la “comunidad de ictiólogos iberoamericanos”. Quizás esté equivocado en mi apreciación, pero creo que vale la pena este intento, ya que, con la colaboración generosa e insoslayable de los integrantes de este “universo”, señalaremos un registro en el tiempo de la Ictiología Neotropical.

A new distributional record of Astropecten polyacanthus Muller and Troschel, 1842 (Echinodermata: Asteroidea) from the coastal waters of Pakistan

Previously an asteroid starfish Astropecten indicus has been described by Tahera (1996), and another species of the genus Astropecten i.e. A. polyacanthus Muller and Troschel, 1842 has been collected from the subtidal region of a sandy shore of Clifton (24°47'42"N 66°59'6"E), Karachi. The latter species is here reported for the first time from the Pakistan coast of the northern Arabian Sea and fills the gap in the known distribution. The species is briefly described and illustrated.
