Charles M. Breder, Jr.: Hypothetical considerations, 1931-1937

Charles M. Breder Jr. “hypothesis” diary is a deviation from the field diaries that form part of the Breder collection housed at the Arthur Vining Davis Library, Mote Marine Laboratory. There are no notes or observations from specific scientific expeditions in the document. Instead, the contents provide an insight into the early meticulous scientific thoughts of this biologist, and how he examines and develops these ideas. It is apparent that among Dr. Breder’s passions was his continual search for knowledge about questions that still besieged many scientists. Topics discussed include symmetry, origin of the atmosphere, origin of life, mechanical analogies of organisms, aquaria as an organism, astrobiology, entropy, evolution of species, and other topics. The diary was transcribed as part of the Coastal Estuarine Data/Document Rescue and Archeology effort for South Florida. (PDF contains 33 pages)

Movement of yellowtail snapper (Ocyurus chrysurus Block 1790) and black grouper (Mycteroperca bonaci Poey 1860) in the northern Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary as determined by acoustic telemetry

We tagged a total of 14 yellowtail snapper (Ocyurus chrysurus Bloch 1790) and black grouper (Mycteroperca bonaci Poey 1860) inside the Conch Reef Research Only Area (a no-take marine reserve) in the northern Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary in November 2001. Both species are heavily exploited in the region. Our objective was to characterize site fidelity and movement behavior along the reef tract to the north and south of the release point. Fishes were collected by baited hook and line from the surface, surgically-tagged with coded-acoustic transmitters, and returned to the reef by snorkelers. Tracking of fish movement behavior was conducted by five acoustic receivers deployed on the seafloor from Davis Reef in the south to Pickles Reef in the north. Fishes were tracked for up to eight months. Results indicated that the majority of signal detections for individual fish from both species were recorded at the two Conch Reef receivers. Limited movement from Conch Reef to Davis Reef was recorded, but no signal detections were recorded at the two sites to the north of Conch Reef. These results suggest that both species show site fidelity to Conch Reef. Future studies will seek to characterize this site fidelity with increased temporal and spatial resolution at Conch Reef. Prosiguiendo con la tarea de rescate de documentos realizada por ProBiota, tenemos el privilegio de editar en este número la obra A través de la Selva de Esteban Laureano Maradona. Hablar de esta figura, llamado por los indígenas Piognak que significa ‘Dr. Dios’ en pilagá, es mencionar a un ser humano generoso y solidario entregado totalmente al bien común. Un hombre que, además de su ejercicio profesional, se dedicó a la investigación cientifíca de la vida y cultura de los pueblos originarios, así como de la flora y fauna de la región ,colaborando con las comunidades locales en aspectos económicos, culturales, y sociales. No es nuestra intención realizar una sintesís de su vida ya que lo han realizado otros autores, pero si mencionar que, si bien recibió honores y reconocimientos en su larga vida, su figura no es conocida cabalmente en diversos niveles de la sociedad. Esto es una tarea que se debe llevar adelante desde diferentes frentes y una de las primeras sería,como menciona Wikipedia, la edición de algunos de sus 20 libros que se encuentran sin ser publicados, y esperan que el Congreso de la Nación Argentina cumpla con la resolución de 1994 de editarlos y donarlos a bibliotecas públicas del país, como fue el legado de su autor. Esperemos que los que tienen esta responsabilidad movilicen sus esfuerzos personales e institucionales para cumplir con el deseo de una persona que dio todo lo que podía dar sin esperar nada a cambio.
