Paralarval and juvenile cephalopods collected in plankton samples on 21 western North Atlantic cruises were identified and enumerated. The 3731 specimens were assigned to 44 generic and specific taxa. This paper describes their spatial and temporal distributions and their developmental morphology. The smallest paralarvae recognized for a number of species are identified and illustrated. The two most abundant and most frequently collected taxa were identifiable to species based on known systematic characters of young, as well as on distribution of the adults. These were the neritic squids Loligo pealeii and Illex illecebrosus collected north of Cape Hatteras, both valuable fishery resources. Other abundant taxa included two morphotypes of ommastrephids, at least five species of enoploteuthids, two species of onychoteuthids, and unidentified octopods. Most taxa were distributed widely both in time and in space, although some seasonal and mesoscale-spatial patterns were indicated. The taxa that appeared to have distinct seasonal distribution included most of the neritic species and, surprisingly, the young of the bathypelagic cranchiids. In eight seasonal cruises over the continental shelf of the middle U.S. Atlantic states, neritic taxa demonstrated approximately the same seasonal patterns during two consecutive years. Interannual differences in the oceanic taxa collected on the shelf were extreme. The highest abundance and diversity of planktonic cephalopods in the oceanic samples were consistently found in the vicinity of the Gulf Stream. Only eight of the oceanic taxa appeared to have limited areal distributions, compared with twelve taxa that were found throughout the western North Atlantic regions sampled in this study. Many taxa, however, were not collected frequently enough to describe seasonal or spatial patterns. Comparisons with published accounts of other cephalopod surveys indicate both strengths and weaknesses in various sampling techniques for capturing the young of oceanic cephalopods. Enoploteuthids were abundant both in our study and in other studies using midwater trawls in several areas of the North Atlantic. Thus, this family probably is adequately sampled over its developmental range. In contrast, octopoteuthids and chtenopterygiids are rare in collections made by small to medium-sized midwater trawls but are comparatively common in plankton samples. For families that are relatively common in plankton samples, paralarval abundance, derived similarly to the familiar ichthyoplankton surveys of fisheries science, may be the most reliable method of gathering data on distribution and abundance. Maternal effects on the quality of progeny can have direct impacts on population productivity. Rockfish are viviparous and the oil globule size of larvae at parturition has been shown to have direct effects on time until starvation and growth rate. We sampled embryos and preparturition larvae opportunistically from 89 gravid quillback rockfish (Sebastes maliger) in Southeast Alaska. Because the developmental stage and sampling period were correlated with oil globule size, they were treated as covariates in an analysis of maternal age, length, and weight effects on oil globule size. Maternal factors were related to developmental timing for almost all sampling periods, indicating that older, longer, and heavier females develop embryos earlier than younger, shorter, or lighter ones. Oil globule diameter and maternal length and weight were statistically linked, but the relationships may not be biologically significant. Weight-specific fecundity did not increase with maternal size or age, suggesting that reproductive output does not increase more quickly as fish age and grow. Age or size truncation of a rockfish population, in which timing of parturition is related to age and size, could result in a shorter parturition season. This shortening of the parturition season could make the population vulnerable to fluctuating environmental conditions.

Post larval stages of Psettina Iijimae ranging from 1.8 mm NL to 44.6 mm SL collected during Naga Expedition and International Indian Ocean Expedition (IIOE) are described. The characteristics which help to identify larval stages of Psettina are: the presence of pigmented urohyal appendage in early stages which is progressively reduced during flexion stages and which disappears in later postflexion stages, the meristics, the spines on urohyal and posterior basipterygial processes and the absence of spines on cleithra. The P. iijimae can be distinguished by the presence of spines on the median fin rays which differentiate near the baseosts along the dorsal and ventral body wall much before the fin rays. The larvae of P.iijimae were more abundant in the Gulf of Thailand compared to South China Sea and Indian Ocean.

Among about 65 species of clupeiform fishes present in the seas around India, most are distributed along both the east and west coasts and have similar spawning seasons and spawning grounds. The most difficult problem experienced with regard to the identification of their early developmental stages is the overlapping sets of diagnostic features among many species within the same genus as well as among species belonging to two or more genera. From studies carried out recently, the present paper sites a few instances wherein certain subtle characters have been used for distinguishing the early developmental stages of a few allied species.

Early developmental stages of two Secutor species, Secutor insidiator (Bloch) (11.9-36.0 mm standard length, SL) and Secutor ruconius (Hamilton-Buchanan) (14.0-33.0 mm SL) collected by ichthyoplankton net from the Bak-khali river estuary of the Bay of Bengal, Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh are described and illustrated. All of the fins with supporting spines and rays were present in the smallest collected sizes of both species. With growth of the specimens, significant changes in melanophore patterns were found. S. insidiator is similar to S. ruconius in having upward protracting mouth parts and body colouration, but can be distinguished easily by its more elongate body shape (body depth 38-47% of SL compared with 46-52% of SL in Secutor ruconius). Both the species occurred round the year from August 1998 to July 1999. The surface water temperature and salinity during the study period varied from 22.0-32) C and 10-37 ppt respectively.

In order to study the early developmental stages of Nandus nandus an experiment was conducted, where eggs and milt were obtained from the laboratory reared N nandus by stripping after 15 hours of 150 mg/kg body weight of carp PG extract injection. Then the eggs were fertilized in the laboratory and subsequent developmental stages were studied. First cleavage (two cell), four cell, eight cell, sixteen cell and multi cell stages were found 30, 50, 70, 105 and 160 minutes after fertilization respectively. Morula, early gastrula, middle gastrula, late gastrula and yolk plug stages were found 5, 8, 9, 11 and 13 hours after fertilization respectively. Hatching occurred within 20±2 hours after fertilization, and larvae were measured 1.60 mm in diameter. After one hour of hatching two melanophore bands were found at the caudal region of the body of the larvae. Eyes were first observed in l 0 hours, pectoral and pelvic fin buds appeared in 22 hours and well developed in 38 hours old larvae. Mouth cleft and brain lobes were visible when the larvae were 34 and 38 hours old respectively. Myomeres partially appeared in 16 hours, which were clearly visible in 74 hours old larvae. Larvae started wandering and searching for food after 56 hours of hatching. The yolk sac was completely absorbed when larvae became 62 hours old.

Seven stages in the life history of the milkfish C. chanos , are recognized and suggested: A, embryonic; B, yolksac larval; C, larval; D, postlarval; E, juvenile; F, subadult; G. adult. An outline is presented of the life history. It is concluded that the milkfish, throughout the known stages of their life history are well adapted and equipped for optimal survival. High swimming performance, broad flexibility in feeding habits, high adaptability to a wide range of physicochemical conditions of the environment are but a few of the adaptations. The main driving force in all developmental stages is the evolutionary response to food distribution and availability followed by predation pressure.

To investigation of the toxic effects of atrazine on newly hatched larvae and releasing age fry of the Caspian Kutum, Rutilus frisii kutum, the 96h LC50 was determined as 18.53 ppm and 24.95 ppm, respectively. Newly hatched larvae were exposed to three sublethal concentrations of atrazine (1/2LC50, 1/4LC50 and 1/8LC50) for 7 days. Different histopathological alterations were observed in fins and integument, gills, Kidney, digestive system, liver and the brain of the exposed larvae. Fry’s were exposed to one sublethal concentration of atrazine (1/2LC50) for four days, and like the larvae’s, many histopathological alterations were observed in fins and integument, gills, Kidney, digestive system, liver and the brain of the exposed fry’s, too. Also, measurements of the body ions: Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+ and Cl- in atrazine exposed larvae and fry’s compare to control groups showed that atrazine is changed the body ions composition. No significant differences were found in length growth rate, weight growth rate and the condition factor of the atrazine exposed larvae and fry. Immunohistochemical localization of the Na+, K+-ATPase in integumentary and gill ionocytes, showed no differences in dispersion pattern of the ionocytes in atrazine exposed larvae and fry, compare to control group. Measuring the dimensions of the ionocytes and counting the ionocytes showed that atrazine is affecting on ionocytes by mild increasing in size and mild decreasing in number. Ultrastructural studies, using SEM and TEM, showed that atrazine have significant effects on cellular and subcellular properties. It caused necrosis in surface of the pavement cells in branchial epithelium, necrosis in endoplasmic reticulum of the ionocytes and changed the shape of the mitochondria in these cells. Results showed that sublethal concentrations of atrazine were very toxic to larvae and fry of the Rutilus frisii kutum, and at these levels can made some serious histopathological alterations in their tissues. Related to the severe histopathological alterations in osmoregulatory organs, like gill, kidney and digestive system, and the alterations in the body ion composition, it could be concluded that atrazine could interfere with the osmoregulation process of the Rutilus frisii kutum at the early stages of the life history.
