ENGLISH: One aspect of the work of the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission is to investigate the biology, life history, and ecology of the anchoveta (Cetengraulis mysticetus) to make possible an understanding of the effects of the fishery on this species. While the catch per standard day's baiting has been used as a measure of the apparent abundance of anchovetas in the Gulf of Panama (Alverson and Shimada, 1957), it would be desirable to have an independent measure of population abundance. One such estimate can be obtained by a knowledge of the fecundity and sex ratio, together with the total annual egg production of this species. This method is one of those used routinely by the U. S. Bureau of Commercial Fisheries to estimate the size of the spawning population of the Pacific sardine, Sardinops caerulea (California Cooperative Research Program, Progress Report, 1 January 1951 to 30 June 1952). While the purpose of the present paper is to provide information about the fecundity of the anchoveta, nothing is known yet of the total annual egg production of this species although Simpson (1959) has provided much of the information (identification of the anchoveta egg, time of spawning, delimitation of the spawning area) which would be necessary as a basis for enumerating anchoveta eggs in the spawning area of the Gulf of Panama.

ENGLISH: Howard and Landa (1958) and Barrett and Howard (1961) have studied the life history of the anchoveta in most of the areas where this species occurs in important quantities. The Gulf of Panama was the only area of Panama included in these studies, as this was the only one from which sufficient samples were available. Berdegue (1958) compared certain meristic and morphometric characters of anchovetas from Montijo Bay and nine other areas of the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean. He found statistically significant differences, and concluded that the fish of the different areas belonged to separate "populations." Fish from Chiriquí province were not included in his study. Since the, completion of the above-mentioned studies, a number of collections of anchovetas from Montijo Bay and Chiriquí province have been obtained. In the present report use is made of this material to determine the salient facts regarding the life history of the anchoveta from these areas and to supplement the available knowledge of the identity of the intraspecific groups. Acknowledgment is extended to Dr. Milner B. Schaefer, formerly Director of Investigations, Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (now Director, Institute of Marble Resources, University of California), Mr. Clifford L. Peterson, Assistant Director of Investigations, and Mr. Edward F. Klima (now with the U. S. Bureau of Commercial Fisheries) for advice and assistance rendered to the project. The shrimp-boat samples were collected by Captains Robert Barrett, Stephen Barrett, and Chester McLean.

Cephalopod remains (beaks, bodies, and parts of bodies) were collected from the stomachs of 157 sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) taken off central California (lat. 37°-39°N). At least 24 species representing 14 families were identified. Frequencies of occurrence of the six most numerous taxa were Moroteuthis robusta 72.0%, Gonatopsis borealis 66.2%, Histioteuthis dofleini 36.9%, Galiteuthis spp. (including G. phyllura and G. pacifica) 36.3%, Octopoteuthis deletron 35.0%, and Vampyroteuthis infernalis 27.4%. One find of two Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni beaks strongly suggests transequatorial migration by one large male sperm whale. (PDF file contains 18 pages.)

ENGLISH: In 1952 and 1953, during the course of a study of the abrupt decline and apparent disappearance from the Gulf of Nicoya of the population of anchovetas (Cetengraulis mysticetus), an important tuna bait fish, considerable material was collected on the taxonomy, biology, and ecology of the several anchovies and the herrings inhabith1g the Gulf. The Gulf of Nicoya, approximately 50 miles long and varying in width from about 5 to 35 miles, is located on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. The family Engraulididae is represented by four genera comprising fourteen species, and nine species were identified as members of eight genera of the family Clupeidae. All of the species inhabit other coastal areas of the tropical Eastern Pacific. (PDF contains 144 pages.)

ENGLISH: This report deals with the Japanese longline fishery for tunas and billfishes from 1967 through 1970, extending the studies made by Kume and Joseph (1969a, 1969b). The distribution of effort and catch is discussed and evaluated, and the changes in apparent abundance are examined. An analysis is made of the sexual maturity and size composition of the fish, and a brief comparison of the size composition of the catches from the longline and the surface fisheries is included. Commercial bottom trawls often have sweeps to herd fish into the net. Elevation of the sweeps off the seaf loor may reduce seafloor disturbance, but also reduce herding effectiveness. In both field and laboratory experiments, we examined the behavior of flatfish in response to sweeps. We tested the hypotheses that 1) sweeps are more effective at herding flatfish during the day than at night, when fish are unable to see approaching gear, and that 2) elevation of sweeps off the seafloor reduces herding during the day, but not at night. In sea trials, day catches were greater than night catches for four out of six flatfish species examined. The elevation of sweeps 10 cm significantly decreased catches during the day, but not at night. Laboratory experiments revealed northern rock sole (Lepidopsetta polyxystra) and Pacific halibut (Hippoglossus stenolepis) were more likely to be herded by the sweep in the light, whereas in the dark they tended to pass under or over the sweep. In the light, elevation of the sweep reduced herding, and more fish passed under the sweep. In contrast, in the dark, sweep elevation had little effect upon the number of fish that exhibited herding behavior. The results of both field and laboratory experiments were consistent with the premise that vision is the principle sensory input that controls fish behavior and orientation to trawl gear, and gear performance will differ between conditions where flatfish can see, in contrast to where they cannot see, the approaching gear.
