South & West Cumberland Fisheries Advisory Committee 12th January, 1976.

This is the report from the South and West Cumberland Fisheries Advisory Committee meeting, which was held on the 12th January 1976. The report contains sections on land drainage representation on local committees, actions to be taken to solve problems with Braithwaite Weir, Enneralde compensation flow, fisheries activities report, recommendations for future policy by association hatcheries and progress made in implementing the recommendations contained in 'Taking Stock' publication. This is the report from the Mersey and Weaver Fisheries Advisory Committee meeting, which was held on the 12th April, 1978. It covers information on fisheries income and expenditure, the pilot warm-water coarse fish hatching and rearing installation at Great Sankey, annual fishing permits on reservoirs and terminated angling leases. It also includes the report by the area fisheries officer on river conditions and fishing, and an update on Tintwistle hatchery and Worthington Stock Pools. Included in this report is also the stocking numbers of coarse fish, brown trout and rainbow trout by the Angling Associations, pollution incidents and fish mortalities and fisheries management. South Lancashire Fisheries Advisory Committee 12th January 1977.

This is the report from the South Lancashire Fisheries Advisory Committee meeting, which was held on the 12th January 1977. The report contains sections on fish mortalities at Henthorn on the 10th July, 1976, fisheries activities, fish stocking, eel fishing on estuarial waters, and infectious Pancreatic Necrosis highlighting its prevention on imports of salmonid fish and ova. The section on fish mortalities looks at fish deaths on the River Ribble caused by a discharge from Clitheroe Sewage Works. Northern Area Fisheries Advisory Committee 12th October, 1981

This is the report from the Northern Area Fisheries Advisory Committee meeting, which was held on the 12th October, 1981. It includes the information on the recommendations of the Area Fisheries Advisory Committees on the Review of Inland and Coastal Fisheries in England and Wales, and the restructuring of rod and line fishing licence duties. It also covers the report by the area fisheries officer on fisheries activities. This comments on river conditions and fishing, migratory fish movements from Yearl Weir fish counter and an update on Holmwrangle hatchery with the summary of the fly planting programme for salmon, sea trout and brown trout. Finally the report adds about stockings carried out by the Angling Associations, fish disease and management and survey work. Aquatic ecology monitoring: water quality, fish, fish catch, sanitation and disease vectors: monitoring No.9, 9th – 12th September 2011

The results reported on were from a monitoring survey No. 9 undertaken between 9th and 12th September 2011 during construction period of the Bujagali Hydropower Project (BHPP). Two pre-construction, baseline surveys in April 2000 and April 2006 were conducted and so far, during construction phase of the project, eight monitoring surveys have been undertaken i.e. in September 2007, April 2008, April 2009, October 2009, April 2010, September 2010, April 2011 and the present one, in September 2011. Since 2009 biannual monitoring surveys have been conducted at an upstream and a downstream transect of the BHPP with emphasis on the following aspects: water quality determinants biology and ecology of fishes and food webs fish stock and fish catch including economic aspects of catch and sanitation/vector studies (bilharzias and river blindness)in addition to the above mentioned studies, a soil pH survey was undertaken on 15th October 2011 in the area behind the reservoir whose filling started a week earlier. The findings of pH status in the catchment of the dam are also contained in this report.

Size composition, growth and sexual maturity of bigeye tuna, Thunnus obesus (Lowe), from the Japanese long-line fishery in the Eastern Pacific Ocean

Size composition data of bigeye tuna taken from the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean by Japanese Prefectural experimental training vessels from 1958 to 1964 are examined. A gradient of increasing fish size from east to west is noted. Males increase in ratio over females for the entire range of lengths examined, and beyond 170 cm comprise more than 75 per cent of the total. The first semester of the year is important as a bigeye spawning season. A general relationship between sexual maturity and thermal structure of the water is discussed. At the end of their 12th quarter of life bigeye are about 114 cm long, by the 16th quarter, 137 cm and at the end of 20 quarters, about 153 cm. The long-line fishery in the eastern Pacific has had a marked effect on the size composition of the stocks of bigeye, but whether the fishing has driven the stocks below a point which could afford a maximum sustainable yield could not be determined. Development and collapse of an Oscillatoria bloom in Loch Leven during July 1994

During 1994, weekly spot-sampling of open water sites on Loch Leven took place from 16th March onwards. Very little difference between spot-sampling sites was observed from 16th March to 5th July. Throughout April and May there was a slow increase in levels of chlorophyll-a, followed by a rapid increase through June, reaching a maximum of 230 micrograms per litre. On 8th July there was a very rapid rise in water temperature, with a corresponding increase in dissolved oxygen and pH. At 0915 hours on 9th July there was a drop in all three variables. These changes were coincident with a marked reduction in chlorophyll-a values falling to 70 micrograms per litre on 12th July. On 16th July evidence of a resurgence of photosynthesis was observed.

Determination of optimum stocking density of Macrobrachium rosenbergii larvae using multiple feed in a commercial hatchery at Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh

Experimental stocking density of Macrobrachium rosenbergii in larval rearing was conducted in A.G. Aqua Hatchery, Chakaria, Bangladesh to study the effect of different stocking densities on growth, survival rate and diseases stress under hatchery condition. The research work was conducted using six cemented rectangular tanks having 3m3 capacity (1.5mX2mX1m) each. Stocking density were maintained in three experimental setup as 200, 150 and 100ind/L of the T1, T2 and T3 respectively with one replicate each. The larvae were fed with Artemia nauplii, Custard, Maxima and brine shrimp flakes. Water quality was maintained by exchanging 20-30% (12ppt saline water) daily. During the study period, temperature, pH, DO, salinity, nitrite-nitrogen, ammonia and alkalinity were maintained from 28.5-31.5ºC, 7.5-7.8, 5.8-5.9mg/L, 12-13ppt, 0.14-0.2 mg/L, 0.22-0.3mg/L, and 140-160mg/L respectively. The growth rates of larvae at 11th stage were recorded in terms of body length 0.115, 0.136, and 0.169 mm/day whereas body weight were observed 0.000115, 0.000180, and 0.000240g/day. The survival rate of larvae were found 21.8%, 30.4% and 51.3% in treatments T1, T2 and T3 respectively. PL was obtained as 43, 45, and 51PL/L and days required of 41, 38 and 34 days in stocking density of 200, 150, and 100ind/L respectively. It was found that the minimum of 34 days was required to attain the PL (12th stage) using the stocking density of 100 individuals/L. Cannibalism, Zoothamnium, Exuvia Entrapment Disease (EED), and Bacterial Necrosis (BN) were found to be the threat to the commercial hatchery operation that might responsible for potential larval damages which can be reduced by lowering the stocking densities in larval rearing tank that also increased the survival and growth rate.
